ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16
Lotus Petal Foundation is committed to providing a life of dignity to
children and young adults from less privileged backgrounds. The
organization is comprised of young professionals who are focused on
providing free education and nutrition to children living in the urban slums
of India. Besides education, we provide free primary and secondary
healthcare to our children and their families. Guided professional and
vocational career options are carved out for the children to help them fulfill
their aspirations.
At Lotus Petal, we truly believe that the prerequisites of healthcare and
education backed by the love and support of the privileged community
can bridge the social divide in our society and empower young minds to
break the poverty ceiling.
In 2011, Kushal Raj Chakravorty, a young corporate professional, set aside his personal savings to start the Lotus Petal Foundation. He started with one class of 7 students. In 2016 Lotus Petal is flourishing with 215 students and comprises of classes from Kindergarten to grade 11.
VIDYANANDA SCHOOL
Vidyananda School is the primary school that runs classes from KG
to Grade 5. We follow the NCERT guidelines for the in class
curriculum. Emphasis is given to the overall grooming of the child
and several confidence building activities are conducted regularly
to ensure that the student is primed for higher education. The total
strength is 106 students.
Education is imparted in English. Special
attention is given to spelling and handwriting
skills.
Regular parent teacher interaction motivates
the parent to keep the child in the education
system.
Theater, use of library and performing arts help
develop the language and inter personal skills
of a child.
PRATISHTHAN LEARNING CENTRE
Pratishtan Learning Center is an English Medium Senior Secondary
school from Grade 6 to Grade 12 based on the NCERT curriculum.
Students complete their secondary education and move into
professional courses or jobs based on vocational skills. Depending
upon their talent and capabilities, each student is counseled to
make a relevant career choice
Students who join the Pratishthan Program are lagging in
education levels by age due to fractured education. They are put
on a fast track program to complete their grade 6 to 10 in 3 years, so
they can graduate from grade 10 at the appropriate age.
The current student count in Pratishthan is 110.
Saloni Raj wants to be a
neurologist and is attending
regular coaching classes in
Vidyamandir to prepare for her
medical entrances. A few of her
batch mates are also aspiring
engineers and are gearing up
for various entrances.

education. Aarogya Wellness is the healthcare program of Lotus
Petal Foundation. Under Aarogya we provide freshly cooked
breakfast & lunch every day; a weekly doctor consultation, specialist
medical intervention like dentist, dermatologist and a physical and
mental fitness program to support the health of each child.

NATIONAL DIGITAL LITERACY MISSION
Lotus Petal is a proud partner of Govt Of India`s National Digital Literacy Mission. The
objective is to provide free, basic computer education to 1000 people. An E-certificate is
provided at the end of the course to each participant.
We work closely with the blue collar workers of the community, various government and NGO
run schools and gated communities to provide this facility.
OUTREACH PROGRAM
Lotus Petal Foundation runs “Indradhanush”, a guided art program at Mother
Teresa`s home for the destitute, Deepashram. Some students paint with their feet, a
few just experiment with holding a brush while the rest just enjoy dabbling colors
freely and sharing affection with their teacher. The idea is to help the boys heal and
catch a break from their mundane routine, soothe themselves and find an outlet of
joy in creativity and restful art.
Shibu or as we endearingly call him “Shibu Hawkings” would paint with his left foot, recen t l y he su rpr i sed everyone with the use of both his feet while working on a composition.
OUR CAMPUS
The two schools are housed in 1133sq yards, 3 floor
rented property in the slums of Sector 31 in Gurgaon,
India. The property consists of spacious and well
ventilated classrooms and clean toilets, the campus is
wi-fi enabled and under cctv vigilance; houses a state of
the art science lab, library, computer lab, a multimedia
room and a smart board enabled class. Quality
controlled storage for all donations made in kind for
food or stationery have also found a designated place
within the campus and are under surveillance.
The upgradation, upkeep and all the above
infrastructure mentioned are a result of meticulous
planning that are supported entirely by generous
individual and corporate donations.
Various individuals and Brittanica
shared their books, friends in
Cargill India, helped with the
racks and the library in Lotus
Petal was set up by the students
and volunteers.
Microsoft helped us to ignite the
spark for science and assisted us in
equipping the Science Lab.
The extension of the admin wing
was sponsored by a generous
family in memory of their father.
The Robbin Harrison Block
houses the science lab now.

per child in our computer lab. 28 seater lab was also
supported in kind by Fluor Daniels and friends in HP
and Round Table.

FRIENDS OF LOTUS PETAL
Lotus Petal has a thriving and supportive volunteer community. People have found
creative ways to spend time with our children and assisted us in making our work
much easier. Some live around the school and many travel from across the globe to
contribute towards the cause of education. It is this unique connect with the
Friends Of Lotus Petal that deepens our belief in 'One World One Community'.
Various corporates (shown here the team from Microsoft) engage in several
personality and communication building activities throughout the year.
Bhupi Rai is an active fund
raiser and awareness
builder for Lotus Petal
Foundation in Durham,
North Carolina, USA. A very
jet lagged Bhupi did not let
any excuse come between
him and spending time with
the students during his
previous visit to India.
Karan Chauhan is the apple of everyone`s eyes in
Lotus Petal. Karan is a high school student in
Morristown, New Jersey, USA and spends his
summer with the staff and children of Lotus Petal.
Clearing drawers and cabinets, organizing
paperwork, making roti`s, micro cleaning the
kitchen, assisting the staff during corporate visits
or just playing ball with the students are few of
Karan`s activities during his stay here. While back
in the United States, Karan is actively conducting
fund raisers for the school.
Prantika Goswami from TCS worked
diligently with our senior students to
provide after school support and
doubt clearing.
DONOR'S & BENEFICIARIES
Lotus Petal considers itself a critical link between the donors with their
beneficiaries. People and organizations connect with us because of their faith
and trust in our honest commitment. We ensure the optimum utilization of the
donations and resources and guarantee a transparent system that enables their
reach to the recipient in the best possible way.
Govind Singh, Vaishnavi`s father-
“I have two daughters and I would
worry for their safety and if I would
ever have money to send them to
school. My family insisted that I
save money for their marriage
already but I really wanted them to
study. We feel blessed to have
found a place like this that takes
care of our children like their own.”
Reena Devi, Sonakshi &
Sujal`s mother- “We thank
God every day for this
school and for the hope
that our children will not
have to live a life like ours.”
Executive Director, Sarovar Hotels & Resorts ,
Sarovar's collaboration with Lotus Petal
Foundation is aligned with the company's
campaign “Happiness @ Sarovar”. “The Sarovar group has always held that what comes from the society, must, in a reasonable measure, go back to it. We are deeply committed to serve the community. We are a responsible company and believe in giving back to society. We recognize that serving the community, especial ly the underprivileged sections, is our core value. Be the change you wish to see, is the core thought behind the Lotus Petal Foundation and we at Sarovar wish to act as a catalyst to transform this dream into reality.”
Karen Bryson
“Lotus Petal Foundation is one of the best run organizations that I have seen these past three years while working with many NGOs in India and a place where I know my donated funds will be well spent. Many lives and families are being improved thanks to the great work of Lotus Petal Foundation. Not only do they have an excellent program to educate the minds of the children, but they have concern for the whole person, ensuring they have been fed each morning so those minds can work hard and that they receive health check-ups to keep the body healthy. Lotus Petal has great leadership, an organized, well-run environment and systems in place to ensure that the potential of these children is not just a dream but something within reach.”
