Dear St. Francis Families & Friends, I am honored to introduce the St. Francis High School Annual Report for 2014-2015. The school year was filled with tremendous accomplishments for our students, staff, and institution. I am proud to share that we continue to grow as a powerful example of Catholic leadership in education – we set the standard for high school excellence across the Central Coast. Now in my thirtieth year in Catholic, Salesian education and my fourth year as President and Principal, I am confident in the value proposition of a St. Francis education. As evidence of that proposition, we want to share with you the following noteworthy accomplishments from the Class of 2015:

• 100% graduation rate• 100% college acceptance rate• 100% of our students annually participate in extra-curricular activities• 100% complete an annual service project• The graduating class included our first National Merit Scholarship Finalist and also a

National Merit Scholarship Commended Student• 52% of the class were recognized as new members of national academic honor societies

in mathematics, Spanish, English, and science• 44% of the class were CSF and/or NHS members• 31% of the class had a 4.0 GPA or better• The class of 2015 was awarded over $2.5 million in academic and athletic scholarships

St. Francis is a comprehensive college preparatory high school that is also intentionally personal–each student is known by name and is both challenged and nurtured to excel in a rigorous, faith-based learning environment. Now more than ever, students need to master not only content knowledge and subject-specific skills, but also master 21st century skills like critical thinking, creating, collaborating, and oral/written communication while using a moral compass. This year we launched our new biomedical science pathway that introduces STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) to our great school. We had hoped to add one new class in this area, but saw two classes fill up. Dr. Lisa Homesley has taken this program, and these two classes, under her leadership as we partnered with Project Lead the Way to ensure our students reap the benefits of a real-world, hands-on STEM education.

This was a year of growth. The school’s population grew by 3.9%; our second annual Grandparents and Grand-Friends Day saw attendance grow by 90%; and our second annual Burgundy & Gray grew in attendees and donors that resulted in a 70% growth in funds raised. At this event we even launched a successful Fund-a-Need segment that netted us the money necessary to install a brand new sound system in the gym last winter. Consequently, the sound improved for our school liturgies, assemblies, spring musical, and graduation.

Message from the President

The 2014-2015 school year also saw growth in support for exceptional and unique students. In the last 2 years we have seen an increase in merit-based scholarships and need-based assistance grow by more than 60%. Consequently, more students from the two dioceses and four counties we serve have been able to attend and excel at St. Francis.

The Class of 2015 distinguished themselves in the athletic arena as well. Under their leadership, we flourished with SCCAL championships in women’s tennis and baseball and another CCS Championship in women’s basketball. We also celebrated two very special students who were recognized and acknowledged by the CIF-CCS as Scholar-Athletes in our section – the first time in school history two students from our school won this award.

As you can see, there is something truly extraordinary about St. Francis High School, and each one of you has played an integral role in our growth. We are a community of faith that fosters excellence through the mission and philosophy of our patron saint St. John Bosco. Our young men and women graduate confident, dynamic young men and women of faith who are ready to lead, serve, and inspire. I look forward to nurturing a strong relationship with you so that we can continue to provide excellent outcomes for our current and future students. God bless, and GO SHARKS!

In the spirit of Don Bosco, Patrick Lee

President-Principal

The Sister Laura Goedken Award 2015

The Sister Laura Goedken Award is presented to the most outstanding senior who blends the attributes of faith, academics, leadership, and student involvement at St. Francis High School. This award, presented through the Board of Directors of St. Francis High School, is named for Sister Laura Goedken who was a key factor in obtaining funding and support to build St. Francis High School. The 2015 award was presented to Isabella Shahmirza.

Isabella excelled in all aspects of her high school career. She took a challenging course of study and maintained a 4.48 GPA. She is a California Scholarship Federation Life Member, member of the National Honor Society, member of

national honor societies in English, mathematics, Spanish, and science, and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) 2015 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Isabella, or Izzy as she is known, was involved in many extra-curricular activities including varsity tennis, basketball, and swimming. She had leadership roles in Animas and many of her other activities. She led the procession of graduates at the commencement ceremony carrying the banner of the school crest. Isabella represents a St. Francis graduate at its best. She is currently attending the University of California, Los Angeles as a pre-med major.

The Saint Dominic Savio Award 2015

Erica Leung was presented with the 2015 Saint Dominic Savio Award for virtue, compassion, and service. Dominic Savio was one of many students of St. John Bosco, but he was distinctive because he possessed all three of these qualities. He realized at a young age that holiness is expressed not in doing extraordinary deeds, but rather in doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way.

Erica exemplified all of these qualities. Always quick to say hello and always with a smile,

she was very active both on campus and in her community. She maintained a 4.05 cumulative GPA, while receiving awards and holding leadership positions in Animas, 4H, National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, Newspaper, the Red Cross, and Yearbook. She was active in sports and competed in tennis, volleyball, and softball. She was known for being hardworking, determined, and dependable. Erica is currently attending the University of Oregon majoring in journalism.

olGrandparents & Grand-Friend Day 2014

St. Francis celebrated relationships across generations on September 12, 2014 at the second annual

Grandparents & Grand-Friend Day. Guests were treated to a continental breakfast and then watched a

video presentation about St. Francis High School. Following the video were introductions of the school

administrators President/Principal Patrick Lee, Assistant Principal for Academics David Cmaylo, and

Assistant Principal for Extra-Curricular Activities Arthur Walker.

Grandparents and students celebrated mass with Father Joseph Paradayil of Our Lady Help of Christians

Church presiding. After mass, Mr. Lee recognized several grandparents for their special contributions to

the school.

Mrs. Jody Ruso was recognized for having the most grandchildren attend St. Francis. She still holds this

record as she has had six grandchildren attend St. Francis High School. Jody is the proud grandmother

of Josh Stringari ‘09, Nicholas Stringari ‘10, Zach Scurich ‘10, John Ruso ‘12, Mathew Rodriguez ‘14, and

Kelly Rodriguez ‘15.

Mrs. Harriett Ryan was recognized for having concurrent grandchildren and great grandchildren

attending St. Francis. Attending St. Francis High School at that time were grandchildren Wyatt Ryan

‘15 and Emma Ryan ‘18 and great grandchild Taylor Gregg ‘17. Harriet was also grandparent of alumni

students Jessica Ryan’07 and Clancy Ryan ‘13.

Sadly, Harriett Ryan passed away in March of 2015. She was a generous supporter of St. Francis. Harriett

was a donor to the school and enjoyed many of its activities. She attended fundraisers as well as many of

her grandchildren’s sporting events. She is greatly missed by the St. Francis High School community.

Mr. Ed Kelly was honored as Grandparent Volunteer of the Year. Ed is the proud grandparent of Megan

Kelly ‘17 and E.J. Kelly ‘19. Ed has been involved with St. Francis since its inception. He has been a

generous donor to all phases of the school. Ed has been the voice in the announcer’s booth at football

games since St. Francis first entered the gridiron, and he is the announcer on the court in the Borina

Athletic Center during all varsity basketball games. St. Francis was pleased to honor Mr. Kelly for his

numerous contributions and all of his generosity to the school.

St. Francis High School Scholarship Programs

“Education is a matter of the heart: success is only possible if God, who is master of hearts, supplies the key.” – St. John Bosco

St. Francis High School fosters excellence in academics, athletics, arts, service, leadership, and faith development. With a commitment to offer all qualified students the opportunity to attend St. Francis, the school continues to provide tuition assistance in the form of merit-based and need-based scholarships.During the 2014-2015, 54% of families received either merit-based or need-based tuition assistance. For the 2014-2015 school year, St. Francis awarded over $580,000 in scholarships and tuition assistance. Merit-based scholarships range from $500 to $5000 per year. Need-based tuition assistance is given in various amounts based on demonstrated financial need.

These scholarships and assistance include three Father David Purdy Presidential Scholarships, two Brother Abel Zanella Memorial Scholarships, eight Don Bosco Awards, two Gregory Moresco Memorial Scholarships, the Hugh Barton Memorial Scholarship, need-based tuition assistance, and two newly added George Backovich Family Memorial Scholarships. The Backovich Scholarships will be awarded to students interested in the visual and performing arts and will be distributed and reported in 2016.

Sources for these scholarships and assistance include donations by individuals to the St. Francis General Fund, Kathryn L. Johnson Endowment Scholarship Fund, Povarello Scholarship Fund, Bishop Harry Clinch Endowment, St. Francis Bingo, St. Francis Raffle, Phillip Rinaldi Trust, Salesians of Don Bosco, Cranston Family Trust, and donations by individuals to named scholarship funds.

The Gregory Moresco Memorial Scholarship

The Gregory Moresco Memorial Scholarship is the longest held named scholarship at St. Francis High School. Started by Gregory’s family in 2002, the scholarship continues to be funded by donations made directly to the fund from family and friends of Gregory.

Gregory passed away in 2002, and his family wished to honor his memory by assisting deserving students who attend St. Francis High School. This merit-based scholarship is renewable for four years and is given to talented graduating eighth grade students from Salesian Sisters School and Moreland Notre Dame. Gregory was an alumnus of Salesian Sisters School. The Moresco Family and the Gregory Moresco Memorial Scholarship continue to support the mission of the Salesians to provide a quality Catholic, college preparatory education in the Pajaro Valley.

The Kathryn L. Johnson Endowment Scholarship Fund

Kathryn Johnson passed away in 2002 at the age of 88. Katie, as she was known, created a legacy at St. Francis through her estate by establishing an endowment scholarship fund.

Katie had a long history in Watsonville. She was the first Watsonville Police Department matron and served on the force for many years. She was dedicated to her faith and wanted to provide the youth of the local area opportunities to attend a Catholic high school. Katie was a donor to the first capital campaign to build St. Francis. Her estate plans resulted in an endowment scholarship fund at the school that is distributed annually to the school’s need-based tuition assistance program. Katie’s generosity has created a lasting contribution that will support students at St. Francis for many years in the future.

The Hugh Barton Memorial Scholarship

Board of Director Emeritus Sam Wright and his wife Terry established a memorial scholarship fund at St. Francis in honor of their friend Hugh Barton. Contributions were also made by other friends and colleagues of Mr. Barton.

Hugh Barton’s relationship with St. Francis began in 2010 when St. Francis senior Curtis Gomez signed a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of the Pacific. Mr. Barton had a long association with UOP and was thrilled to preside over the ceremony and to welcome Curtis on behalf of the University. After this initial contact with St. Francis, Mr. Barton was impressed with the strong academic and athletic programs at the school, and he remained interested in the progress of St. Francis High School and its students.

This need-based four year renewable scholarship is awarded to a student from Monterey County who demonstrates excellence in academics, service, and leadership.

Father David Purdy Presidential Scholarships

St. Francis awards three Presidential Scholarships to incoming ninth-grade students who have demonstrated excellence in academics, community or parish service, leadership in school, and outstanding character. These prestigious merit-based $5000 scholarships are renewable for four years.

The Presidential Scholarships are named in honor of Father David Purdy. Father David has been a guiding force for St. Francis since its inception. He is a former President of St. Francis High School (2001-2003) and a former Salesian Provincial. Presently, Father David is St. Francis’ beloved Campus Minster. He can be seen greeting St. Francis students at the gate every morning and wishing them well on their way home at the end of the day. Father David is the ultimate SHARK fan and can be found at all athletic and performing arts events.

Brother Abel Zanella Memorial Scholarships

The Brother Abel Zanella Scholarships are merit-based scholarships awarded to three incoming ninth grade students. These $2500 scholarships are renewable for four years. Students in good academic standing and who demonstrate strong character may be eligible to receive these awards.

Brother Z was a model of Christian service on the old St. Francis school and farm and on the new St. Francis campus. He gave over sixty years of dedicated service to St. Francis, the Salesians, and the people of the Pajaro Valley. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 97. These scholarships named in honor of Brother Zanella are a fitting tribute to a man of great character, dedication, and commitment.

olGiving Opportunities

It is only through the vision and generosity of many that St. Francis High School exists. There are many ways to make a lasting contribution to the community through support of St. Francis High School. Giving provides an enduring way to support a cause in which you believe. Your friendship and support of the legacy of St. Francis are the most meaningful gifts of all.

Annual GivingThe Annual Appeal is the financial lifeblood of St. Francis High School. The fund sustains programs and activities not fully covered by tuition, keeping the cost of a Catholic, Salesian, college preparatory education an attainable goal. It is the best way alumni, parents, and friends can make a meaningful difference.

Matching GiftsMany firms and businesses offer matching programs for both active and retired employees. If yours does, please enclose the company form with your gift to St. Francis so we can have your company increase your gift. We will gladly take care of the paperwork for you.

Scholarships and EndowmentsGifts to St. Francis scholarship and endowment programs provide financial support to qualified students who otherwise might not be able to attend. The mission of St. Francis High School is to ensure that a Catholic Salesian college preparatory education is accessible to any qualified student.

St. Francis Legacy CircleSt. Francis High School has roots reaching back to 1869. The tradition of Catholic education here includes St. Francis Seminary and junior and senior high schools. Periodically we receive notice that the school has been named a beneficiary by a friend or graduate of the “old St. Francis” who has passed away. The St. Francis Legacy Circle was created as a way to recognize and thank benefactors who have made provision for the school through their wills, insurance policies, or charitable remainder trusts. If your estate plan includes St. Francis High School, please let us know so we can express our gratitude.

Memorial and Tribute GiftsMemorial and honor gifts to St. Francis are a lasting way to remember a loved one who has passed away or to honor milestones like birthdays, graduation, an anniversary, or other significant events. These restricted and unrestricted gifts can build an enduring legacy at St. Francis.
