2013 was a wonderful year. Our entrepreneurial ecosystem continued to blossom and so did our stakeholders: startups, social entrepreneurs, job creators, accelerators, angel investors, active mentors, venture capitalists, research centers, and university spinouts. Silicon Valley and MENA-based Arab entrepreneurs, women and men, sparkled. Serial entrepreneurs created in excess of $4 billion in shareholders’ value. In the Arab World, allocations to venture capital investments ballooned from $120 million to $500+ million. Investments from Silicon Valley firms in Arab-led startups exceeded $200 million. Startups mushroomed across the board from e-commerce, enterprise software, mobile payments, media, entertainment, wearable devices, and 3D printing to spinouts from idea labs and leading Science & Technology Centers in Big Data, Cloud Computing, Security, and Biotech.

Incubators in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Dubai and Saudi filled to capacity. Angel investor groups formed and took an active role in early stage financing. Corporate partners deployed effective programs and platforms to accelerate product development. Some expanded their presence to Silicon Valley. All in all, the stage was set for TechWadi to make an exceptional impact in our traditional mentorship and acceleration roles. Our privileged location in Silicon Valley, coupled with a passionate team of volunteers and key partners with a deep connection to the MENA region, enabled us to act as a gateway for international collaboration, to empower a highly creative and talented pool of entrepreneurs, and to help build a sustainable infrastructure for entrepreneurs to thrive.

Collaborations with strategic partner organizations expanded our reach and reinforced our ambition. UC Berkeley and Microsoft played significant roles in hosting networking events, so did NestGSV. We represented the Middle East at the impressive Global Mobile Internet Conference in San Francisco where 10,000+ mobile apps entrepreneurs from 60+ countries attended. We co-hosted the first hackathon in Qatar as well as the MIT Arab Startup Competition finals in Doha. Working with Enterprise Qatar and Silatech, we completed the planning phases to launch an incubator in Doha, a corresponding accelerator in Silicon Valley, and a $100 million VC fund. Our relationship with Harvard University through the Harvard Arab Weekend and with Stanford University in the AMENDS Conference grew for the second year in a row. Last but not least, our collaborations with entrepreneurship initiatives (AUC, Oasis500, PALinnO, Flat6Labs, and i360) in the Middle East ensured our efforts were focused on what we are committed to: building bridges for entrepreneurship.

With the help of our partners, expansion and impact became the themes of the past year. Capitalizing on TechWadi 100 - our network of highly accomplished executives, entrepreneurs, CEOs and investors who have committed heart and mind to mentor promising startups – we have successfully launched two noteworthy initiatives. The first is business acceleration of the MIT ABC three finalists in Silicon Valley. This includes housing, mentorship, business development, and angel financing. The second is a major social entrepreneurship program, Nebny, to assist in education, health care provision, and vocational training for residents of Cairo’s “garbage city”, Manshiet Nasser. Both initiatives proved most effective.

We have seen incredible results in the past year and are deeply grateful to our members and sponsors, and particularly honored to have the Skoll Foundation and Google for Entrepreneurs act as key supporters in our efforts to scale our capacity to assist those in need. We are equally honored to have Deena Shakir and Hala Fadel join our Board. We look forward to an extraordinary 2014.

Angel Investing and Crowdfunding in the Middle East at UC BerkeleyIn partnership with UC Berkeley’s Fung Institute, Silatech and Shekra, TechWadi joined scholars, venture capitalists, and innovators to explore how to work together to advance economic opportunity through entrepreneurship in the Middle East. The two-day conference began with opening remarks from Dr. Lee Fleming, Director of the Fung Institute and Dr. Tarik Yousef, the CEO of Silatech. The conference centered on the role of angel investing and crowdfunding, and how community based crowdfunding is providing opportunities for new businesses to prove their concepts, identify markets, minimize risk, and scale. TechWadi acceleraTes MIT COMPETITION WINNErS

2013 MIT Arab Startup Competition winners Instabug - whose mobile SDK allows mobile application developers to crowdsource their feedback process by allowing users to shake their devices to submit data - made its entrance into Silicon Valley by launching its public beta at VentureBeat’s MobileBeat conference. Targeting a global market of mobile application developers, TechWadi was thrilled to host co-founders Moataz Soliman and Omar Gabr in Silicon Valley for their acceleration program. TechWadi Board Member Youssri Helmy, a long time mentor for the team, put together a custom agenda to provide the co-founders the opportunity to collaborate with industry experts on strategy, product development, customer acquisition, and monetization. The program allowed them to take part in meetings and workshops with seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, all ensuring a constant immersive experience, tailored to Instabug’s needs.

Despite facing many challenges, the team was able to establish a dynamic product and showcase the Arab world’s thriving entrepreneurial spirit amidst political instability. They were featured in leading tech media including VentureBeat, TechCrunch, TheNextWeb, FastCompany. At the end of their 2-month stay with us, the team had achieved over 600% growth in developers using the SDK, over 200,000 device installs, expanded their product offering from iOS to Android, doubled their team size, was in discussions with potential big name corporate clients, and was wrapping up a round of financing from strategic Silicon Valley investors.

The third place winner at the MIT competition, a graduate of the Oasis500 accelerator in Jordan, has worked with TechWadi mentors for months to connect with corporate strategic partners and define her strategy. Moreover, CEO Riham Mahafzah helps us reaffirm our belief that this is the golden age of of Arab women leadership. We hope she will be the first of many success stories empowered by plugging into the Silicon Valley ecosystem through this program.

BEYOND WEALTH CrEATION

SAVING LIVES, IMPROVING LIVELIHOODThis past year, with generous support from the Skoll Foundation, we took bold steps forward and launched our first social entrepreneurship project, Nebny USA.

Founded in Cairo in 2011, Nebny Foundation aims to impact the lives of thousands of residents in Manshiet Nasser, Cairo’s largest slum area. Known otherwise as Garbage City, this 1.2 million person neighborhood suffers from many ills, including chronic unemployment (78 percent), highest infant mortality rate (5 percent before the age of 5), shortest life expectancy (33 years) and lowest quality of education (60 percent of sixth grade students are illiterate). Besides difficult social and economic conditions, residents live in overcrowded, poorly constructed housing that exposes them to extreme health risks. With poor sanitation and reduced access to safe food and water, their own dwellings are breeding grounds for tuberculosis, hepatitis, pneumonia, cholera, and diarrheal disease.

To address these problems, Nebny has developed a strategic three-pronged approach focusing on education, job creation and health care to save lives and improved livelihood. The programs are managed in Cairo by 480 volunteers as well as a few full time employees under the guidance of Chairman Jawad Nabulsi. In the US, fund raising, crowdsourcing, community outreach, corporate governance, and compliance are managed by Heidi Abbas, supported by our CFO Joe Kell and supervised by a world class Board of Directors. Their common goal is to transform this 1.2 million-person slum into a thriving neighborhood with access to vital health services, increased employment levels, and substantial educational resources.

In the past year, Nebny has helped over 1,200 students in their educational program. We have established a much-needed partnership with Tahrir Academy, founded by Wael Ghonim. This wonderful online initiative aims to crowdsource knowledge, and help groups design, review and deliver educational audio and visual content for users in Arabic. In an effort to provide our students with more advanced educational training, we reached out to Gooru in Palo Alto and to Partners for Sustainable Development (PSD) one-laptop per child program in Palestine to make use of Google technology to curate and organize educational content. We also secured a donation through MetraComputers and Microsoft of desktops and laptops to launch a children-learning center using interactive learning tools.

Health Care is another area of active involvement. In 2008, the Egyptian government closed the only operating medical facility, leaving residents with no access to local health services. After much lobbying, we were able to secure permit to reopen the medical center. We have also secured funding and medical equipment to open a

Touched 100,000 Lives, Impacted 20,000 Families, Educated 1,200 Students, Recruited 480 Volunteers, Distributed 48K LE Microloans, Treated 3,000 individuals. Chosen from over 37,000 NGOs in the Middle East to join the World Bank staff donation campaign.

temporary medical clinic, providing interim treatment to the community until the center is operational. The medical clinic is comprised of 10 specialized clinics ranging from pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, to internal medicine and dentistry. The facility will eventually integrate a Women’s Community Clinic to improve the health and well-being of women and girls through educational care and reproductive health resources.

Vocational training and support for entrepreneurs are the third Nebny track. In an attempt to advance the skill set and expand employment opportunities for the locals, Nebny is in the process of establishing a vocational training program. The program will provide training in the areas of sewing, carpentry, painting, plumbing, financial planning and small business development. Each area will have an average of 20 individuals enrolled for a two-month program. Upon completion, these individuals will have working space available at a Nebny workshop to allow families a sustainable income. In addition, Nebny provides workshops and skill training programs for aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their business ideas. Through the microloan program and TechWadi’s support, 23 microloans have been granted, 90% of them women who started home based businesses that allowed them to contribute to the economic sustainability of their families.

Through our partnership with Nebny, we are working to address the needs of this neglected community and hope to make a positive impact in their lives through our projects. We aspire to transform this slum and develop a sustainable model for improving living conditions for many across the MENA region.

Skoll World Forum at Oxford TechWadi Chairman Dr. Ossama Hassanein and TechWadi 100 member Fadi Ghandour participated in the 2013 Skoll World Forum in Oxford. They sat on a panel titled, “Young, Educated, and Out of Work: The Middle East’s Jobless Generation” and discussed approaches for strengthening MENA’s educational, employment and entrepreneurial ecosystems for the 30% of youth that are unemployed in the region – nearly twice the global average.
