growth: a stage in the process of growing; progressive development.

For more than 40 years, the professionals, staff and volunteers

at Orchard Village have partnered with families and communities

in empowering people with developmental disabilities to achieve

fulfilling lives. Our nurturing environment, stimulating activities

and attentive support work together to cultivate in the lives of our

clients a sense of security, accomplishment and personal growth.

Mirroring our clients’ efforts toward advancement, we at Orchard

Village are working to grow as an organization to accomplish

our mission and contribute to community vitality. We’re identifying

new funding sources; increasing our involvement and visibility

in the region; exploring income-producing social enterprise

opportunities; and striving to better measure and improve the

quality of our services.

For both client and caregiver, growth is the goal. It’s a fertile time for us.

Dear Friends of Orchard Village,

The legendary 20th century retailer James Cash Penney once observed: “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” We at Orchard Village still recognize the wisdom in Penny’s adage. By “working together” with families and communities—volunteers, civic officials, employers, private donors, public funders, advocates and other “forces”—we provide opportunities for our clients with developmental disabilities to advance and grow. Indeed, partnership is at the core of our mission and is essential to our growth as well.

We are pleased to share with you, our esteemed partners, this brief report on our activities in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013. It has, indeed, been a year of expansion for several of our programs. We have maintained a steady and adequate cash flow and witnessed the start of an endowment fund. We are on track in executing our most recent strategic plan. And we’ve expanded our Board of Directors…completed the hiring of our management team…improved our staff quality training and metrics…and upgraded several of the residential properties that our clients call “home.”

In fiscal year 2013, our staff of 150 full and part-time professionals served nearly 280 individuals with developmental challenges through our Residential, Vocational and In-Home services, and via our innovative Orchard Academy program. We continue to embrace a person-centered approach, advancing our clients along a self-determined, goals-based path toward personal fulfillment, productivity, community engagement and, where possible, independent living.

As always, we are grateful for the generous dedication, support and counsel of our Board of Directors. Our volunteer corps of nearly 130 individuals was again heroic in its efforts. And to our generous donors, grantors and contributors, we again extend our sincere gratitude. Your embrace of our work is inspiring, and we aim to invest these resources wisely.

We are confident that the strength of our valued partnerships—“forces working together”— will ensure the health and future growth of Orchard Village.

With gratitude,

A Year of Growth and Accomplishment

Providing Essential Vocational SupportIn fiscal year 2013, our Vocational Services assisted 138 adult customers seeking either new job placement or job maintenance support. We successfully placed nearly half of our 60 job placement customers, a laudable achievement amid the current economic environment.

One successful placement involved Josh, a 30 year-old customer who lives independently. Josh had been out of work for a while, so our job development team coached him on interviewing and social interaction skills while also identifying potential employers. Josh really applied himself, and the resulting growth in his confidence during interviews paid off. In May, he accepted a position as dining room attendant at Portillo’s in Skokie.

Growing Our Own BackyardAs a way to put our social enterprise ambitions to the test this year, we piloted an actual urban farm on the grounds of our Marmora Avenue campus. Orchard Village staff and volunteers (including expert landscapers, horticulturists and agronomists) cleared, prepared and tilled the quarter-acre plot before planting a wide variety of vegetables and herbs. Orchard Academy students helped to water and maintain the farm and, by June, several of our 24-hour group homes were discovering healthy, delicious ways to include the farm’s early summer harvest in their meal preparation. Given the farm’s initial promise, we plan to repeat the pilot in 2014 while exploring ways to join with our customers in “going to market” in the future.

For their generous donation of services and materials, Orchard Village extends thanks to our friends at Rebuilding Together North Suburban Chicago; Beinlich’s Tree Care; O’Brien & Co. Landscape; The Care of Trees; Rosborough Partners, Inc.; Saints Faith, Hope and Charity Church of Winnetka; Jeanne Pinsof Nolan; and Sharon Gaske, Steve Cook and Greg Stack from the University of Illinois Extension Program.

Preparing for Independent LivingOne of Orchard Village’s most important activities is preparing certain of our customers for independent living in their community. One customer, Alex, age 21, made tremendous progress along that path during fiscal year 2013. Alex lives in our transitional group home in Morton Grove. He attends Orchard Academy each day, while also excelling at his new job with Great Lakes Naval Base. As busy as he is, Alex even managed to devote his athletic skills to a winning softball team.

Alex has grown admirably, developing such skills as cooking his own meals, mastering his transportation schedule and demonstrating dependability and professionalism at work. He learned about making healthy choices, and worked at establishing and building relationships with others. Undoubtedly, Alex will achieve his goal of living independently and productively in his community.

Expanding Reach in the CommunityOur Home Based Support Services (HBSS) address the needs of families who care for their loved one with a disability in the family home. HBSS also works with adult customers who live independently but seek the ongoing counsel of a trained individual. We began offering HBSS in 2007, garnering four customers that year. In fiscal year 2013, our customer total reached 50 for the first time as we added 10 new clients in the 12-month period.

Samantha is one of our recent HBSS success stories. She lives with her father and her six year-old son in the community. With the help of her HBSS Personal Support Worker, Samantha has been learning such independent living skills as cooking, laundry and house cleaning. Outside the home,

she is no longer anxious about shopping alone for groceries, making her proud to be a resourceful provider for her growing son.
