I often tell people that I have the best job in the world, and I really do mean that. One of the things I love most!about my job is that the Food Bank truly gets to serve as a community resource. Consider how our various!programs work together to serve the larger region.!!With over 181,000 children living in poverty, our child hunger programs are working to feed children when!school meals are not available. Our 44 Kids Cafe sites in twelve different counties offer dinner meals, weekend!meals and summer meals. Our 107 Backpack Program sites in sixteen different counties provide backpacks full!of nutritious ready-to-eat foods for children at risk of hunger on weekends and holidays.!!Our Second Helping program provides monthly food boxes to seniors who struggle daily with decisions like!whether to buy the food they need to stay alive or the medicine they need to stay alive. Thousands of boxes are!provided each month in eight different counties with more counties being added each year.!!Our Second Harvest Pet Food Bank provides pet food to families who love and want to keep their pets but!cannot afford to feed them. We also provide support to dozens of rescue organizations on a daily basis.!!We are working to eliminate food waste and protect our environment with our Community Food Rescue!Program. This program rescues perishable foods from hotels, restaurants, sports venues, catering companies!and produce stands that is usable, but would have been thrown away. Over five million pounds is saved from!the landfill every year and most importantly, is delivered to soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other partner!agencies that feed on site.!!Rural areas are especially challenging because poverty rates are high and resources are sometimes scarce. Our!Mobile Pantry trucks drive out up to 10,000 pounds of food per trip directly to these rural areas where families!are served right from the truck. Over 2.9 million pounds of food were distributed through this program last year.!!2013 was our most successful year yet, thanks to each of your donations of time, food and money. These gifts!mean the world to our neighbors in need. Please keep helping us as we strive to be the best possible!community resource for those in need in our region.
