MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The 2013-14 year was very memorable. With our highest number of graduates, a record revenue year, the launch of the new Diabetic Alert program, and an exciting facility expansion, the year was defined by success.

That success provides the foundation for our growth plan. As we complete the renovations, we are secure in knowing we will be able to

place more Dog Guides with qualified Canadians in the coming years. Our target is to graduate 200 Dog Guide teams on an annual basis.

The progress we have made can be attributed to the generosity of people who have made so many positive contributions. In the last year, a considerable number of individuals left us funds in their wills. Also, strong investment income contributed greatly to our record revenue. All of these sources give us confidence to continue to grow and provide more Dog Guides to Canadians and help to reduce what is a constantly growing waiting list.

We are grateful to our outstanding Board of Directors, staff, Lions and Lioness Clubs, corporations and individuals who are together helping us build for the future.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

Again, for 2013-2014, the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides had a great year.

During the International Convention in July, Lions from all parts of Canada took time to visit our facilities in Oakville. Our new office space on John Street enabled us to add six new rooms to accommodate clients while they are staying at the Lions Foundation learning how to work with

their new Dog Guides. Our main goal is to graduate 200 teams on an annual basis and we aim to reach this in the next three years.

Speaking on finance, it was a good year. The support of Lions Clubs is still very important to us. And we have to salute those individuals, corporations and service clubs who also show their support year after year. Analyzing the figures, you will be able to see that the Lions Foundation is in good standing financially. But, we need your constant support to be able to help Canadians with disabilities.

Being near the action for the last four years, I was able to see what tremendous changes Dog Guides provide to so many people. When you support the Lions Foundation, you give someone back their mobility, security, and most importantly their independence.

Building Success

BlueprintsNEW BEGINNINGS

The impact Dog Guides have on their handlers’ lives reflects a thorough process that begins before they are born. The established breeding program at the Lions Foundation is focused on producing dogs that exhibit a high degree of trainability, intelligence, the best possible physical attributes and exceptional temperament. In order to achieve this, the Lions Foundation carefully selects each dog for the breeding program.

The program’s breeding stock included 45 females and 14 males over the last year. Most breeding dogs come from within the Dog Guide program; however some are donated from other internationally accredited and recognized service dog schools around the world.

BREEDSBorn

The breeding program produced 32 litters which yielded 224 puppies in 2013-14. The success rate of future Dog Guides also excelled during the year, with 71% of the puppies bred graduating as official Dog Guides. This foundation of puppies that are bred to be exceptional service dogs is essential to building successful, long term partnerships that change lives.

The growth of the breeding program is driven by the increasing demand for Dog Guides. Ten years ago, the program was producing 10 to 15 litters of puppies. Now, with the growth of the programs and greater awareness, we are working towards breeding 250-280 puppies in 2014-2015.

“Ethan has been sleeping side-by-side with Oliver since the first night at home, and that has been a huge, immediate improvement for both Oliver and for us, as previously we

needed to be with him through all or part of the night, simply

to comfort him when he would awake. Now Ethan plays that

role,” says Peter, Oliver’s father.

Dog Guide GraduatesMeet some of the people Dog Guides have helped…

Walker is a gentle soul who watches out for me. He is

helping me regain my independence and

find a new start in life.

Em helps me wake up every morning by

alerting to my alarm and helps me rest easy at night because I know

she will alert me to the fire alarm.

Having Juno has given me the confidence to go out

on my own, to take longer walks and to try new

experiences. In the past I was hesitant to stray too far from my comfort zone in terms of walks or trips because of my diabetes.

Halim streamlines tasks like picking up things that I have dropped or opening and closing

doors. I’m an active guy and always on the go.

Having Halim makes life much easier.

“I have helped out with the dogs at Dog Guides for six years and it is the best volunteer job! The dogs love having a break from their training to receive a friendly scratch, a good brush, some time to stretch their legs or just relax. Our reward is seeing the dogs get paired with their new handlers, and witnessing the beginning of their new lives together as a team. The dogs make such a huge difference to people.”

– Anna, Volunteer

WORKING TOGETHER TO CHANGE LIVES

Over the last year, volunteers at the Lions Foundation collectively worked 2,553,697 hours. This time was spent constructing various pillars that contribute to the overall success of the organization.

The dedication of volunteers ensures that Dog Guides in training are properly groomed, cuddled, and walked; kennels are kept clean; fundraising events are organized and executed; general maintenance work is completed; foster puppies have loving homes; and administrative staff have help with projects such as mailing.

A large sector of the volunteer program is the foster family program. This year, 291 families opened their homes to future Dog Guide puppies to help guide them through their first year and prepare for official training. Foster families expose puppies to as many public places and experiences as possible. They take them to training classes, for checkups with the Foundation’s in-house veterinarian, to work, the mall, the movies, vacations, and to school. When it is time for the puppy to start official training, foster families bring them back to the Lions Foundation knowing that they have played an important role in shaping a life changing Dog Guide.

After four to six months of intensive one-on-one training, Dog Guides are carefully paired with clients and spend up to four weeks working and bonding together at the Oakville training school. The Lions Foundation funds the entire $25,000 it costs to breed, raise and train each Dog Guide, including all travel and accommodation expenses for each client.

TRAINING AND PROVIDING DOG GUIDESIn 1985, the founding Dog Guide program, Canine Vision, set the framework for helping visually impaired or blind Canadians. Its success led to the addition of five other Dog Guide programs:

Hearing Ear, helping people who are deaf or hard of hearing

Seizure Response, helping people who have epilepsy

Service, helping people with physical disabilities

Autism Assistance, helping children who have autism spectrum disorder

Diabetic Alert, for people who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness

The addition of the Diabetic Alert Dog Guide program was the result of extensive research and an identified need for Canadians living with type 1 diabetes and hypoglycemic unawareness. The program was launched on November 14, 2013, to celebrate World Diabetes Day.

These Dog Guides are trained to detect sudden drops in their handler’s blood sugar through scent and alert them so they can test and eat something if needed. In an emergency, Diabetic Alert Dog Guides can bark for help, activate an alert system, and seek help within a home environment.

All Dog Guides spend four to six months training one-on-one with a qualified trainer, forming the skills they will need to assist someone who has a disability. The head trainers who lead each program lend years of experience to mentor trainers and apprentices, ensuring a high standard is consistently achieved.

To help meet the growing demand for Dog Guides, eight apprentice trainers were added to the training team this year. Apprentices complete a three year program working with trainers in their assigned program, learning techniques and shadowing class lessons. These additional apprentices will provide the people power needed to support the planned increase in Dog Guide graduates.

The skill that a Dog Guide learns is half of the dynamics of a successful team. The other half lies in making a complimentary match between the needs of each client and Dog Guide. The Lions Foundation places great emphasis on evaluating the lifestyle of applicants before matching them with a Dog Guide to ensure that once the team is formed, they enjoy a long, successful working life together.

This year, 153 teams graduated from the six Dog Guide programs. Each Dog Guide was provided at no cost, despite requiring approximately $25,000 to train and place.

INCREASING SUPPORT

Fundraising is essential to the success of the Lions Foundation. Without government funding, Lions Foundation of Canada continues to grow as a recognized charity that contributes in a very real way to the day-to-day lives of Canadians with disabilities.

Fundraising Progress

The ability to provide Dog Guides is possible through the generosity of many, including individuals, companies, organizations and Lions clubs across the country. Whether it is an event, a corporate partnership, sponsorship of a Dog Guide team or a single donation, each contribution is invaluable.

The 2013-2014 goal was $4.5 million and we exceeded that goal by 47% raising $6.6 million. Effective fundraising efforts enabled this success and provided for the graduation of 153 Dog Guide teams. The Lions Foundation successfully launched a new campaign in 2013: Opening Doors to Independence. This campaign’s goals were to introduce the Diabetic Alert Dog Guide program, increase residential space for clients by 25%, renovate space for training staff to have improved meeting rooms and increased access to technology for client support, and ultimately provide 30% more Dog Guide teams.

The goal of the campaign is to raise $1 million over three years. The campaign gained momentum in late 2013 with a generous donation from Don Meehan and grants from Ontario Trillium Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation. This support propelled the launch of the Diabetic Alert program and helped kick start renovations at the Oakville training centre.

In 2013-2014, Lions Foundation of Canada raised $6.6 million. The fundraising costs were only 10 cents for every dollar raised.

“I am very pleased to participate as a contributor to Dog Guides. It is an outstanding organization dedicated to helping so many people and it is remarkable how these Dog Guides can make such a positive influence in people’s lives. In this respect, I am so happy to provide my support.”

Fundraising SuccessCorporate Support Corporate support continued to grow over the last year with more partnerships and donations. Nestlé Purina PetCare is a true leader, a key corporate donor since the beginning and continues to provide invaluable support, donating dog food, as the title sponsor of the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides, and partnering with Dog Guides at several promotional events. There are numerous opportunities for companies to support Dog Guides whether it is donating funds or services, choosing Dog Guides as a charity of choice, having employees volunteer or designating proceeds from their own special events.

Foundation GrantsSeveral foundations throughout Canada support Dog Guides with grants. Some have been annual donors for the past several years and this continued support is invaluable. With research and successful proposals, each year there are opportunities for additional sources of funding.

Dog Guide Sponsorship Companies, individuals, Lions and Lioness clubs and organizations generously sponsor Dog Guide teams, covering a portion of the costs of training each Dog Guide. The goal is to have a sponsor for each team and although sponsorship has increased significantly along with the number of graduates, additional sponsors are still needed, especially in the newest programs.

Special Events Lions Foundation of Canada hosts several special events throughout the year including an annual auction, open houses and of course, the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides. Lions Foundation of Canada is delighted to have the enthusiastic support of dedicated organizations, companies, individuals and Lions clubs who host their own fundraising events and tournaments with proceeds supporting Dog Guides. Their contributions and that of the donors and participants are essential to the program.

Lions ClubsLions clubs continue to provide approximately 20% of the donations each year. They contribute to many areas including the sponsorship program, events, fundraising campaigns and award programs. They also are the foundation for the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides, as the majority of Walks are organized by Lions clubs.

For a list of Lions and Lioness Club contributions see page 22.

AccountabilityLions Foundation of Canada is accountable to many stakeholders; volunteers, donors, Lions clubs, partners and clients. Donors put a lot of faith in our commitment to use their contributions wisely and we continue to operate efficiently and be fiscally responsible with our donations. Our administrative costs were 9 cents for every dollar raised. For every dollar spent 10 cents were spent on fundraising activities.

Lions Foundation of Canada is an accredited member of Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code Program and a founding member of the national Standards Program. This program demonstrates excellence in five key areas: board governance, financial accountability and transparency, fundraising, staff management and volunteer involvement. The Lions Foundation adheres to the Donor Bill of Rights and the Director of Development is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. We are proud to responsibly manage the donations we receive.

The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors from across Canada, and is managed by a dedicated staff that ensure that every donation is used effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of its clients.

Commemorative Giving Whether purchasing a tree in Memorial Forest to commemorate the life of a loved one, or a plaque on the Pet Memorial Wall, or making a donation to honour a recently departed loved one, there are several options to choose from.

Leaving a LegacyA planned gift is a gift to commit to now, but which is realized in the future. It helps individuals structure a gift that fits their personal goals, while maximizing available tax benefits. The resulting donation provides the Lions Foundation with the support it needs to continue to provide Dog Guides and build into the future. A growing number of people are leaving a lasting legacy with a planned gift in their will.

Several people have established Dog Guide endowment funds to invest in the future growth of Dog Guides.

Purina® Walk for Dog Guides 2014

“This is our 4th year taking part in the Newcastle Walk and it is such a worthwhile cause! The program helps so many and makes a huge difference in people’s lives.”

Trish, Newcastle Walk participant

The Purina® Walk for Dog Guides is a national fundraising event held in more than 200 communities across Canada. Each year, participation increases and so do the funds raised; this support helps the Lions Foundation build more successful partnerships between Dog Guides and Canadians who have disabilities. To date, the Walk has raised more than $11 million.

Participants and donors are drawn to the Walk because it is a fun and easy way to give directly to the cause. One hundred per cent of the funds raised go towards the six Dog Guide programs thanks to the support from Nestlé Purina PetCare, the Walk’s title sponsor, and national sponsors Fido and WestJet.

In the last 29 years, the Walk has grown from an Oakville based event to a national fundraiser that takes place in every province and draws thousands of people and their dogs. This year, the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides took place in 209 communities and raised $1,163,843.27, an unprecedented amount and an enormous growth on the $54,227 it raised in its first year.
