We have just completed another year of successfully graduating teams from our five Dog Guide programs, including our 2000th

graduate. Leading the way speaks to the skills of our very qualified Dog Guides who give new safety, independence and mobility to so many people across the country.

Our organization is focused on leading the way. Seeing the life-changing effects our Dog Guides have encourages us to continually seek new ways to assist Canadians with disabilities. For us, this meant a major new campaign, Opening Doors to Independence. It will fund the expansion of our facilities and the launch of our new Diabetic Alert Dog Guide program. We know that these new Dog Guides will have a lifesaving impact for Canadians who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness. New programs are only possible for us when we are able to maintain an increase in service to our existing Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Seizure Response, Service and the fast growing Autism Assistance program.

This leadership is possible through staff that lead the way each day. Our Board of Directors keeps their eyes firmly looking ahead and fuels our leadership. Thanks goes to our volunteers and thousands of donors who make it possible for our Dog Guides to be provided to many Canadians.

Leading the Way

The very first step towards changing the lives of thousands of Canadians with disabilities was taken in 1983, when Lions Clubs across Canada founded Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in Oakville, Ontario. The initial purpose of the Lions Foundation was to provide Canine Vision Dog Guides to people with visual impairments. Since then, the school has grown and the Lions Foundation now offers six distinct programs that assist people with a wide range of disabilities: Canine Vision Dog Guides, Hearing Ear Dog Guides, Service Dog Guides, Seizure Response Dog Guides, Autism Assistance Dog Guides, and Diabetic Alert Dog Guides.

Governed by a Board of Directors comprised of representatives from each province and territory, the Lions Foundation’s mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them Dog Guides at no cost. Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides has continuously led the way in terms of quality and breadth of service.

A strong community of individuals, corporations, donors, volunteers, foster families and staff, all committed to fulfilling one mission, contribute to the success of the Dog Guide programs. Collectively, they ensure that the growing number of Canadians living with a disability have access to life changing Dog Guides. With their help and generosity, the $25,000 it costs to raise and train each Dog Guide is covered, ensuring that Dog Guides are accessible to those who need them most.

Qualified applicants are brought to the Oakville, Ontario training and residential school and stay for one to four weeks, learning how to work and bond with their new Dog Guides. All travel, accommodation, meals, training, and Dog Guides are provided at no cost.

“I am sleeping so much better knowing I have my set of ears watching out for me. Eclaire has alerted me to a fire alarm while I was sleeping which brought tears of happiness; it was a big fear for me in regards to safety and not being able to hear the fire alarm.”

– Jacob, Hearing Ear Dog Guide graduate (Toronto, Ontario)

“We have been so blessed with our Autism Assistance Dog Guide Keats! He makes my son’s life so much easier and has helped him in so many ways, more ways than I could ever have

imagined. He has given him new found independence and the ability to learn life skills.”

– Tracey, mother of Autism Assistance graduate Braydon (Winnipeg, Manitoba)

“The independence and confidence that my Canine Vision Dog Guides have given me has allowed me to live with more confidence. It is very difficult to feel sorry for yourself, when

one is so very lucky to have a Dog Guide beside you.”

-Paula, Canine Vision Dog Guide graduate (Oshawa, Ontario)

“The biggest impact Texas has had on Ethan is the comfort and security that he has given him. Ethan mostly suffers from night seizures, so having Texas with him at bed time has

helped our whole family rest easier. It is also amazing to us that Ethan’s seizures are getting to be fewer and farther between and if he does have one, after barking for help,

this very active, energetic Golden Retriever just totally lays low and doesn’t leave Ethan’s side for as long as it takes him to bounce back.”

– Yvonne, mother of Seizure Response Dog Guide graduate Ethan (Caronport, Saskatchewan)

“My Service Guide Dog Whisper has given me independence. Before I was paired with Whisper, I would never leave home without someone accompanying me. Since I have

received Whisper, I go out wherever, whenever I like because I know that if I need something she’s there to help me.”

A Successful Start

The success of the programs is rooted in the Lions Foundation’s commitment to providing the highest quality Dog Guides, training each one of them to meet the specific needs of their handlers. The majority of future Dog Guides are bred through the Lions Foundation’s in-house breeding program, which includes exchanges of dogs from renowned international service dog schools. Each Dog Guide is bred for ideal trainability and temperament. In 2012-2013, the breeding program had 50 dogs; 35 females and 15 males, and introduced 227 puppies into the foster puppy program. The breeds used are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Standard and Miniature Poodles.

Over the course of the last year, 227 volunteer foster families, along with many volunteer dog sitters, dedicated their time to guiding small puppies along the first leg of their journey to becoming Dog Guides. Countless hours are invested into caring for, teaching and preparing puppies for official Dog Guide training.

and see how much they will impact their lives for the better. I feel very privileged to have played

a part in that whole process of the dog’s journey to be partnered with someone as a Dog Guide. I plan to

continue fostering for Dog Guides and contribute in this way to such a wonderful and important organization.”

“Volunteering at Dog Guides Canada has allowed me to contribute to a very worthwhile cause – providing Dog Guides at no cost to those

who need help in their daily lives coping with varied disabilities.

It is fun working with the truly dedicated trainers at Dog Guides. Being a dog

lover, it is wonderful being able to meet and work with so many terrific dogs

and knowing that at the same time I am contributing to a program that will make a huge difference in someone’s life.”

- John, Volunteer since 2010

Helping Hands

Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes an equally dedicated group of volunteers to help produce top quality Dog Guides. Most volunteers at the Lions Foundation participate in a range of activities to support the cause.

In 2012-2013, more than 600 volunteers donated over 100,000 hours; 269 of whom donated more than 100 hours each of service. In addition to the volunteers who contribute time at the Lions Foundation’s facilities, there are over 250 foster families and dog sitters who commit to caring for and raising future Dog Guides around the clock. These families teach puppies basic manners and socialize them to a variety of environments, including school settings, workplaces, malls and shopping centers, grocery stores, and many other public places.

Some of the ways that volunteers make a difference are:

•Organizing a Purina® Walk for Dog Guides• Fostering future Dog Guides•Weekend babysitting of Dog Guides in training• Fundraising•Participating in corporate volunteer days•Guest speaking •Helping with events•Providing administrative support•Maintenance •Grooming and bathing Dog Guides in training•Puppy cuddling•Walking Dog Guides in training

Raising the Bar

Donations are the lifeblood of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides; without them, Canadians would not be able to receive Dog Guides at no cost. Without government funding, the Lions Foundation continues to grow as a recognized charity that has a positive impact on the everyday lives of Canadians with disabilities.

The 2012-2013 revenue goal was $4.5 million and we exceeded that goal by almost $900,000, raising $5.4 million. Combined with a few key bequests and investment income from endowment funds, the Lions Foundation accelerated its long range plan to expand and was in an excellent position to launch a new campaign in 2013, Opening Doors to Independence. This campaign will provide the funding needed to continue to grow to meet the demand for Dog Guides and ensure that Lions Foundation of Canada remains a leader in its field.

Being able to provide Dog Guides at no cost to each recipient is possible through the generosity of many, including individuals, companies, organizations and Lions clubs across the country. Whether it is an event, a corporate partnership, sponsorship of a Dog Guide team or a single donation, each contribution makes a difference. All help towards providing the gift of independence to people with a physical or medical disability.

“I love helping people and love dogs. This way I get to help a person as well as make a wonderful team with man’s best friend.

There is such a wonderful feeling when you get to meet the client and the Dog Guide.

It makes all the hard work so worthwhile.”– Karen

Purina® Walk for Dog Guides

The Purina® Walk for Dog Guides started as a singular event in Oakville, Ontario and has grown into a national event dedicated to raising funds to provide Dog Guides at no cost. Each year, it takes place in communities both big and small, with its results benefitting people across the country. This year, 203 Walks raised $1,096,537, an unprecedented amount, demonstrating the growing commitment of many to changing the lives of people with disabilities.

The Walk is the largest event of its kind in Canada, leading the way in how grassroots fundraisers connect directly with people with disabilities. Walk organizers, sponsors, participants and donors help people with disabilities live safer, more independent lives with each step they take and dollar they raise. With the continued generous support of Nestlé Purina PetCare, 100% of the funds raised go directly towards the Dog Guide programs and ensure that the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides fulfills its mission to change lives.
