VisiON

The AAPG Foundation was established in 1967 to assist the Association and other qualified

organizations by providing a source of funding to support educational, charitable and scientific

objectives which directly and indirectly benefit the geologic profession and the general public.

Previously, costs of AAPG services and publications were entirely defrayed by Association

membership dues and from sales of publications. However, as costs continued to increase,

it became apparent additional funding would be essential to the continued success of the

Association.

The leaders of the Association and the Foundation are committed to the belief that a strong

Association is mandatory to ensure the future of petroleum geology in providing energy for the

benefit of mankind.

Uniting their strengths, the Association and the Foundation become an instrument for

providing informational, networking, and financial benefits, and strive together to ensure the

quality and quantity of AAPG products and services to its membership, the greater geoscience

community and our global society.

MissiONTo support, exclusively within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3), educational,

charitable, and scientific activities related to, or allied with, the field of geology.

MEssAGE fROM THE CHAiRMAN

It is with sincere appreciation that I, along with all of the AAPG Foundation Trustees,

express gratitude to all of the individuals who have dedicated time, talent and financial

support to the AAPG Foundation. Our mission to bring relevant programs and services to the

geologic community is advancing because of your faithfulness and dedication.

The Foundation’s Financial Campaign – “Meeting Challenges…Assuring Success” has

proven to be a true representation of our commitment, as we have exceeded $32.2 million in

contributions and pledges and are headed straight toward the campaign goal of $35 million.

The impact of earth sciences on mankind is being recognized now more than ever before.

It has become imperative to develop new methods of energy resources and AAPG Foundation

programs are at the core of this new research. Foundation programs such as Distinguished

Lecturers, K-12 Education, the Energy Resources Library and Grants-in-Aid positively affect

geoscientists as well as the global community.

This annual report provides a comprehensive review of the organizational chart, financial

status, programs, funds, and donors of the AAPG Foundation for this past fiscal year. As you

read the material provided, please know that the part you play is important and valued.

MEssAGE fROM THE ExECUTiVE diRECTOR

Josiah Charles Stamp, English Economist and President of the Bank of England in the 1920’s

and the second richest man in Great Britain wrote the words above, but it could have been written

by any number of people associated with the AAPG Foundation.

Participating in and witnessing the effects of the Foundation’s efforts put forth in its 30-plus

programs has been extremely fulfilling and fruitful.

The Board of Trustees met four times this fiscal year, evaluated 31 proposals and approved

funding for 16. Financial support went to various special publications, teacher’s workshops and

field courses, maps, AGI’s Earth Science Week, various courses for professors, an Antarctica

expedition, the Boy Scouts Merit Badge program, an interactive geology project at the University

of Colorado and more. Services were provided to countless numbers of geologists and students

of all ages. From the Distinguished Lecture series to Grants-in-Aid, the programs managed and/

or supported by the AAPG Foundation continue to strengthen our industry.

Our accomplishments would not have been possible without the loyalty and support of our

donors. As we continue to cultivate new partnerships and explore more ways to meet the mission

of supporting educational, charitable and scientific objectives that benefit the geologic profession

and the general public, we’d like to recognize important individuals who have enabled the AAPG

Foundation to come as far as it has. Approximately 3,000 people contributed financially to the

AAPG Foundation this past year. Our gratitude is immense.

Let me close by expressing my pride in the dedication of our Board of Trustees, Financial

Campaign Committee, Members of the Corporation, Trustee Associate Officers and members and

the Corporate Advisory Board. Your assistance has been invaluable.

I hope you are pleased with how the AAPG Foundation utilizes the funds entrusted to carry out

the mission of the organization. We are performing and evolving. And I trust that you share our

excitement about the role we can play in what promises to be a new epoch for our industry and

for our planet.

As I prepare to turn over the reins of Executive Director, I brace myself for the wonderful world

of volunteerism! And I can say with confidence that by channeling our knowledge, creativity and

determination, we will continue our tradition of growth and influence.

sTATUs Of THE fOUNdATiONFiscal year ending June 30, 2010

As a part of its vital mission, this 501(c)(3) organization encourages a better understanding and advancement of the geosciences by supporting education, training and career enhancement for earth scientists.

fiNANCiAL OVERViEW

As everyone knows, the economy has been challenging the past several years. However, the economy improved modestly last year, which assisted in the Foundation’s investment portfolio growth. The Foundation portfolio grew by 7.2% which is the first gain in the past three years.

The investment portfolio is conservatively invested and well diversified and includes public and private equity mutual funds, fixed income mutual funds, international investments and real estate. The investment portfolio of the Foundation amounted to $31.3 million on June 30, 2010 compared to $29.2 million on June 30, 2009.

The total assets of the Foundation were $34.68 million, which includes the Foundation headquarters buildings and the investment portfolio.

For fiscal year 2010, the Foundation operating revenue amounted to $1.053 million compared to last year for the same period of $936.5K. Revenues came primarily from rental income, interest, dividends and capital gains, and oil and gas royalties. Operating expenses totaled $1.395 million compared to the previous year of $1.424 million.

Including contributions to the Foundation of $2.244 million and awards and grants of $2.125 million, the Foundation had a surplus for the year of $2.2 million. For comparison, in fiscal year 2009, the Foundation had a loss of ($6.8 million) due primarily to losses in the investment portfolio.

The contributions to the Foundation for FY 2010 of $2.24 million are above FY 2009 of $1.43 million. Approximately 15% of AAPG members contributed to the Foundation through their AAPG dues statements. For FY 2009, 10 percent of AAPG members contributed to the Foundation in this manner, and in FY 2007, contributions were $1 milion with 15% of the AAPG members contributing voluntarily through their AAPG dues statements.

PROGRAM sUPPORT

The Foundation continues to support many of the core programs supported the past several years as well as some new programs. Awards and grants amounted to $2.125 million. This number includes $567,000 for the Bridge Fund and compares to $1.286 million in FY 2009; $1.24 in FY 2008, and $816,054 in FY 2007.

Since its inception in 1978, the AAPG Foundation Energy Resources Library has provided library services in the form of literature searches, interlibrary loans, document delivery and general reference for AAPG members, non-members, and headquarters staff. Petroleum geologists must access a variety of information in the search for hydrocarbons. Energy libraries provide access to primary data like well logs, produc-tion data, scout tickets, etc., whereas the AAPG Foundation Library provides ready access to geoscience literature information in the form of articles, books, periodicals, newsletters, statistical data, ready reference, etc.

The core of the library’s collection is the full archives of the AAPG publications along with most of the publications of AAPG’s sections and affiliated societies. A good collection of books and journals from trade publishers and other geological societies can also be found. Electronic resources such as CD-ROMs, DVDs, online databases and journals, and the vast wealth of Internet resources are becoming the most utilized segment of the library.

This year, library usage statistics showed that the majority of requests were for domestic information – geological data within the United States. With the ever increas-ing oil price, requests for reports and articles on older fields or “mature basins” for possible infill drilling or enhanced recovery is common place. Unconventional sources of energy such as shale gas and coalbed methane are popular requests.

Most requests to the library come by phone or email. Search generated bibliogra-phies and requested documents are now almost exclusively being delivered by email. This provides almost instant access to needed information for the busy petroleum geologist.

Headquarters staff utilized the library for ready reference, Internet research, editing questions and special projects.

For those who prefer to do their own searching, the library’s website provides links to governmental sources, document delivery services, publishers, map dealers, and web pages of other societies. Please see below.

The Daniel Busch Library Fund was established with a gift annuity by Daniel A. Busch. Donations to this fund help defray expenses directly related to the operation of the library.

The Michel T. Halbouty Lecture fund supports an annual lecture to be given at the AAPG annual meeting focusing on exploration. The subject of the lecture must deal with wildcat exploration in any part of the world, especially in areas where major discoveries might contrib-ute significantly to petroleum reserves or space exploration where astrogeological knowledge would further mankind’s ability to develop resources on earth and our solar system.

At the April 2010 AAPG annual meeting in New Orleans, the series marked the tenth anniversary with Aubrey K. McClendon speaking on “Shale Gas and America’s Energy Future.” McClendon has served as Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Chesapeake Energy Corporation since he co-founded the company with Tom L. Ward in 1989.

Established in 2009, the Bridge Fund is dedicated to the creation of a feature length documentary film and large scale website that examines the future of energy – what fuels we will be using in the coming decades, how we will get there, and what this means for all of us. The mission of the project is to create a culture of energy education, so that consumers can make wise energy decisions in the ways they live, the products they buy, and the culture they shape – to help ensure a secure energy future for all of us.

The filmmakers include Dr. Scott W. Tinker as the projects guiding voice and on-camera narrator and Harry Lynch, of Arcos Films, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, to produce the film and website. Filming is complete and the project is in the final stages of editing, to be released in 2011. It is intended for broadcast to a general audience, distribution through video and international satellite and perhaps theatrical in limited markets. To date, $2.1 million has been raised. The $3 million project was partially supported with a grant from the AAPG Foundation.

HOLLANd AWARd Of ExCELLENCE fUNd

The AAPG/Holland Award of Excellence Fund was established by Dr. David “Scotty” Holland to be used by selecting high achieving faculty members from the Holland School of Sciences and Mathematics at Hardin-Simmons Univer-sity for special recognition and reward. Recipients are chosen annually and awarded a financial award from this endowment to be used for professional development and enrichment.

Dr. Steven Rosscoe, Assistant Professor of Geology at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, received the award in 2009. Rosscoe says he joined the HSU family in 2008 because of its tradition of giving students a high quality education and fostering a friendly, family-like atmosphere that is similar to those experiences he had during his education.

Dr. Steven Rosscoe, winner of the Holland Award of Excellence with Dr. Scotty Holland
