Building Stronger Tomorrows

At a recent budget meeting, the Treasurer of our Board of Directors commented, “If ReStore succeeds the way we hope, it will be a game changer.” Everyone in the meeting knew what he meant – that ReStore could completely change how DuPage Habitat raises funds, how many families we serve, and our position in the community.

Game changers are hard to come by, so when they do succeed, the results are fantastic. At DuPage Habitat for Humanity, most of our work is grassroots, participatory and steady. Through the diligent efforts of our volunteers, Board of Directors, partners and staff, we have worked hard to help over 50 families become homeowners.

From this hard work and partnership, we believe a few true game changers have emerged:

ReStore is a resale store for new and gently used home improvement supplies. DuPage Habitat spent over a year preparing for the July 23, 2011, opening of our first ReStore at 869 S. Rohlwing Road in Addison. Nationally, ReStores raised over $300 million for Habitat affiliates in 2009. On average, one ReStore diverts 150 tons of usable materials from landfills. Financially and environmentally, ReStore is a game changer.

Habitat has espoused the concept of partnerships since our founding in 1976. In DuPage, we now have partners that service our mortgages, provide financial counseling to our partner families, and recycle the electronics that our ReStore collects. By identifying organizations that can do things that DuPage Habitat needs done, but more efficiently than DuPage Habitat can do them, and for free, we are opening up our staff and volunteers to focus on our key areas. This leverage is a game changer.

Through our tithe to HFHI, DuPage Habitat multiplies its scope by funding one home internationally for every home built in DuPage County. As our number of local homes built grows, so does our number of international homes funded. With over 50 local families served, that means another 50 families served elsewhere in the world. That means about 300 lives changed. This multiplier is a game changer.

We have long known that purchasing a Habitat home is transformational for a partner family, particularly for the children in the home. We have also known that building with Habitat can fundamentally change the social capacity of a volunteer. Now we know that Habitat can be transformational in new ways.

Thank you for your support over the past year as we have identified these game changers. We hope you will stay involved with Habitat in the next year as we continue to grow.

After 17 years of helping families become homeowners, DuPage Habitat finally secured a home of our own! With another local nonprofit, the DuPage Homeownership Center (DHOC), Habitat applied for and secured a grant from DuPage County to purchase offices at 1600 E. Roosevelt in Wheaton. The shared offices provide one-stop shopping for many low-income clients seeking to purchase an affordable home, as well as a larger meeting facility for volunteer meetings and community education.

Congresswoman Judy Biggert attended the Grand Opening celebration at the new office and commented, “In these tight economic times, it’s wonderful to see two of DuPage’s best non-profits working together creatively to support families in our community.”

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans committed to sponsor a fourth DuPage Habitat house this year, making them our largest corporate sponsor in the past 10 years! Nationally, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is Habitat’s largest single source of private funding, constructing nearly 2,500 around the world since 2005. Thrivent Builds is designed to involve Thrivent members and Lutherans in Habitat’s mission. Zenobia and her children are slated to purchase the Thrivent-sponsored home in December 2011.

As a soon-to-be-homeowner, Zenobia is looking forward to “having a stable living situation” and to “not being dependent on someone else for a place to live.”

Tim Caldwell is a Habitat life-r. He owns The Savanna Group, a landscaping company serving DuPage, and has donated landscaping materials and his expertise to Habitat for over a decade. “I wanted to help, and I know how important it is to have a home,” said Tim. When Habitat began building green, Tim became more invested, calling on his contacts in the industry to lend a hand and donate products.

“I don’t know what Habitat would do without him,” said Brian Harris, DuPage Habitat’s Construction Manager. “They don’t make them any better than Tim Caldwell.”
