DEAR FRIENDS, Thanks to your generosity this year, Josephinum Academy students have again embraced the opportunity to pursue their highest academic potential. We are pleased to report that every one of our graduates has been rewarded for her commitment to our rigorous program with a college acceptance.

Josephinum relies upon your generous support in order to provide its transformative education to young women with limited financial means. Our board and administration place a high priority on fiscal stewardship and I am proud to report that Josephinum finished the 2009/2010 fiscal year with a modest surplus.

This year we are celebrating our 120th anniversary. Thank you for your investment in the lives of our students which enables us to continue the legacy as a solid Chicago institution of learning and personal growth. Together, we are inspiring our young women to be the confident, faith-filled leaders of tomorrow.

Gratefully yours,

As a small school, students have increased opportunities to participate in a broad range of extracurricular activities.•

Josephinum’s community service program creates a social awareness that motivates students to be informed and active •

the helen bruns ryan scholarship

Josephinum Academy’s Board Chair Emerita, Helen Bruns Ryan, has been honored for her dedication to educating Chicago’s young women for over twenty-five years. As a longtime leader and supporter of the school, she has helped make enormous improvements for Josephinum and for the

community it serves. A graduate of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, she says, “I have a strong desire to work on behalf of those who have not had many of the same advantages and to help bring educational challenges to them in new and dynamic ways.”

The Helen Bruns Ryan Scholarship is awarded to the student who most embodies the Sacred Heart Goal Five: A student who commits herself to personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. Josephinum Academy is most grateful to Helen Bruns Ryan for her steadfast dedication and generous support.

“i loved being part of such a wonderful community full of young leaders. i will miss the friendships i made and the teachers that were always there for me if i needed help.”

- Laura Guzman, Class of 2010Now Attending Pomona College in California

Beginning in the 2009 Fiscal Year, Josephinum changed its accounting method to reflect the value of the use of its facilities, which are donated to Josephinum by the Sisters of Christian Charity. Due to this change, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, Josephinum incurred a net rent expense of $259,350. Without this non-cash expense, Josephinum would have finished the fiscal year with a net surplus of $39,019. We wish to extend our gratitude to the sisters of christian charity for the continued use of the school building and land.

“education is the key to success and josephinum helped me realize that. being in an all-girl school helped me stay focused. i will miss the positive spirit and the love here.”
