The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do

something about MS now – to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. MS stops people

from moving. We exist to make sure it doesn’t.

This year, the Society provided over $33.5 million to support 345 new and ongoing research projects, plus an

additional $1.5 million for Fast Forward, a new part of the Society’s approach to MS research and treatment that focuses on

moving promising research discoveries into the drug development process more quickly.

Locally, the Pacific South Coast Chapter provides programs and services designated to help the 45,500 people and families affected by MS in

San Diego, Orange and Imperial countines move their lives forward. Nearly $4 million is spent on MS research in our area annually. We are people

who want to do something about MS now. Learn more at MSpacific.org

We are a driving force of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure.

Excitingprogresswasmadein2010invirtuallyeveryfieldofMSresearch. Progress toward finding new therapies for MS is highlighted by the availability of the first disease-modifying therapy for MS taken orally. Progress was also made toward finding ways to restore function, improving quality of life, and specific MS symptoms through exercise, meditation, rehabilitation and medications, including the first therapy specifically approved to treat a symptom of MS (Ampyra). Our understanding of factors that influence whether a person develops MS deepened this year, bringing us closer to finding ways to prevent the disease.

Toward Stopping MS Exciting progress was made toward finding better therapies for MS, including the availability of the first disease-modifying therapy for MS taken by mouth.

Toward Restoring Function Progress was made toward finding ways to repair nervous system damage and toward improving quality of life and specific MS symptoms through exercise, meditation, rehabilitation and medications, including the first therapy specifically approved to treat a symptom of MS (Ampyra).

Toward Ending MS Forever Understanding of factors that influence whether a person develops MS deepened this year, bringing us closer to finding ways to prevent the disease.

MS research

More Progress in Research

New links were reported between MS and smoking, Vitamin D blood levels, and Epstein-BARR virus, facilitating deeper research into these areas

A guide to distinguishing MS from look-alike disorders was developed by our international task force and published for use worldwide in a leading journal (Multiple Sclerosis)

The International Genetics Consortium, formed with Society funding, began a study, which is now 90% complete, to identify the common gene variants that predispose individuals to MS

The next generation of MS investigators was encouraged by the funding of all 31 recommended clinical and research training fellowships

Fast Forward forged ahead to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial development of treatments

• Four companies received funding to move novel research discoveries (some generated by Society-supported projects) into preclinical development • Fast Forward and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation began jointly funding a drug discovery program that leverages resources for therapeutics with promise in both MS and diabetes• Fast Forward and Merck Serono collaborated on a novel agreement that will bring $19 million over five years to speed new MS therapies to market

We are activists. Everyone involved in the National MS Society has a stake in the public policies that shape lives — from local parking ordinances to state insurance regulations to the federal entities that grant research funds.

At the Pacific South Coast Chapter, 1,769 individuals are part of the MS Action Alert Network and 26 people living with MS are MS Ambassadors.

Change happens through MS activism. The National MS Society and MS activists nationwide relentlessly advocate every day for federal policies and government programs to benefit the lives of people with MS and their families. The MS California Action Network, MS Action Network and the chapter’s Government Relations Committee advocate for research monies and health care rights, striving to promote public policy in the best interest of people with MS. Society activists persuaded the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense to allocate nearly $12 million in new MS research funding from 2008 to 2010.

The Society engaged the Obama administration in priorities for people with MS and coordinated efforts to drive policy changes, especially concerning caregiving.

MS Awareness Week in March saw another increase in media coverage and constituent engagement across the nation.

Media placements featuring the Society occurred almost 18,000 times and a national story about MS appeared at least twice each week.

The Society’s Activist Network, which increased to over 65,000 people, ensured that people with MS were heard.

The bipartisan Congressional MS Caucus grew to include 118 representatives and 21 senators, all of whom support federal legislation impacting people with MS.

Local activism grew with 180 coalitions across the Society’s chapters working on state and local MS issues.

The National MS Society participated in 17 national coalitions on healthcare reform, chronic disease issues, support for medical research and disability rights.

We mobilize the talents and resources of the millions of people who want to do something about MS.

Volunteerism

We will raise $1.25 billion by the end of 2010 to be used to create a world free of multiple sclerosis.

Economic challenges or not, the Society’s donors and fundraisers gave generously to support Society programs and services and research to find the cause and cure of MS.

Bike MS: 2,401 people cycled and raised $2,453,430 million at the two-day, 30, 100- or 150-mile Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour, Sponsored by Land Rover Miramar. The Tour was also voted the “Best Cycling Event” by readers of Competitor maga-zine for the fourth consecutive year.

MS Dinner Auction: 450 guests helped raise $420,000 at the MS Dinner Auction sponsored by Azamara Cruises held at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort.

Walk MS: At the University of California, Irvine; LEGOLAND® California in Carlsbad; and NTC Park in San Diego, 12,243 people raised over $1.7 million at San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS.

MS Golf Invitational: At the La Jolla Country Club, $149,440 was raised by 120 players. Coach Norv Turner of the San Diego Chargers acted as the chair for the event, and was joined by Philip Rivers and other star players.

Race to Stop MS Endurance Training Program: 38 Triathletes and marathoners competed in over 5 races and raised $58,552.

Challenge Walk MS: In September 2010, 263 Walkers plus 71 Super Crew and Crew members raised $905,569.

None of the accomplishments this year could have happened without the engagement of talented, hardworking, generous volunteers. The National MS Society embraces, values, and recognizes every contribution. With the help of volunteers, we stretch our donor dollar and build a stronger organization. We partner with volunteers every day, at every level, and with every project. We welcome volunteers with diverse talents and backgrounds. We will work with their availability and lifestyle, and provide growth and development at all points of service.

Chapter Achievements Include:

290 individuals served as leadership volunteers, leading over 5,100 individuals serving as volunteers.

Some 2,700 people received support by attending one of our 32 self-help groups (led by over 50 volunteers).

The local MS Action Alert Network was activated this year reaching out to more 1,700 volunteer activists who are telling their stories to our local public officials.

Twenty-six MS Ambassadors shared a personal story to educate and inspire event participants and donors.

We engaged more than 15,600 walkers, cyclists or other event participants, who advanced MS awareness and raised vital funds.

In 2010, the National MS Society unanimously endorsed a 5-year strategic roadmap, titled the Strategic Response: 2011-2015. Rather than just a traditional organizational strategic plan, it strives to be a response to the brutal facts of living with MS and identifies what must be done, not only at the Society, but globally to achieve a world free of MS. The resulting set of goals and objectives reflects voices across the MS com-munity – hopes, dreams and expectations – and the Society’s plan to drive results in five key areas. The Strategic Response effectively guides priorities and work across the organization and the entire MS movement – fueling progress and moving us closer to a world free of MS.

Individuals and organizations from across the country and around the world guided our work to develop the 2011-2015 Strategic Response. The Society began an outreach process, engaging nearly 10,000 individuals — including over 7,000 people living with MS. Their shared experiences and perspectives provided clear expectation about what must be accomplished to change the lives of those with MS by the year 2015. Participants represented a wide range of people in the MS movement: those liv-ing with all forms of MS, health care professionals, researchers and scientists, elected officials and activists, donors and event participants, corporate partners and pharma-ceutical companies, volunteers, and more.

The resulting Strategic Response for 2011-2015 is bold, and reflects the urgency we collectively share in our work for the next five years – focusing on key priorities and outcomes that impact life with MS in 2015 and beyond.

Strategic response

As with the Strategic Response for 2006-2010, five key strategic goals provide the foundation for the response. Each goal is supported by the objectives and expected outcomes that impact the lives of everyone affected by MS.

We are a driving force of MS research and treatment to stop disease progression, restore function, and end MS forever.

We develop, deliver and leverage resources to enhance care for people with MS and quality of life for those affected by the disease.

We are leaders in the worldwide MS movement, mobilizing millions of people to do something about MS now.

We are activists.

We develop and align human, business and financial resources to achieve breakthrough results.
