This year’s coin programme not only offers impressing interpretations of important people and events, but also technical innovations. For the first time in the history of German numismatics, an official collector coin will be finished with the rare metal niobium: the 10 euro polymer ring coin “On Water”. Moreover, the 25 euro collector coin in fine silver on the birth of Jesus will be produced as a dome-shaped coin. This type of dome-shaped minting creates a concave side, enabling a deeper relief and thus a more expressive impression. This is also a first in the history of collector coins in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The 2021 programme thus offers a very diverse range of coins. Among the highlights are certainly the coloured 20 euro collector coin with the mouse from German children’s television as well as the three 2021 gold coins. We are also happy that the European Soccer Championship, which had to be postponed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place this year so that the associated 20 euro collector coin in sterling silver can be issued.

Important coin series are coming to an end this year, including the gold coin series “Native Birds” as well as the polymer ring coin series “Climate Zones of the Earth” and “Air and Motion”. That’s why we are certainly waiting with particular excitement for the announce-ment of new series starting in 2022.

The fairytale “Mother Hulda” from the Grimm brothers features the contrast between a lazy and a hardworking sister, depicted in the lower part of the coin. Mother Hulda, who lets it snow on earth by shaking out her bedding, punishes the lazy girl and rewards the other one.

The most popular mouse on German TV celebrates its 50th birthday in 2021, having made children and adults laugh and marvel for five decades. The coin that hon-ours the character and the TV show “Sendung mit der Maus” features a partly coloured presentation of the orange mouse cannily looking at its birthday present.

Sophie Scholl would have turned 100 years old on 9 May 2021. Together with her brother Hans, she stands for the resistance against the NS regime for which she paid with her life. Many people associate her name with the fight and protest against limits to freedom and against suppression. The coin shows her portrait based on a well-known photo of her.
