ANNUAL OPERATIONS REPORT 2012

2012 ANNUAL SUMMARY After the whirlwind year we experienced in 2011, we were glad to have a much more routine operation in 2012. As the construction industry began to see a slight upturn in 2012, so did the operations of Alabama 811. For the year we ended the year with an overal 7% increase in locate request volume processing 371,714 locate requests. This was the highest year total since 2008. In doing so we also managed to increase our locate request volume without adding personnel overheard by utlizing technology in our GeoRemote and E-Ticket programs. Approximately 28% of our total locate request volume for 2012 was processed by our electronic programs. We continue to encourage qualified users to enter their locate requests via our GeoRemote program as well as our E-Ticket program.

Beginning in September 2012, we converted our software system, GeoCoall, to the new version 3 platform. This newest version is a web based application which provides more funcitonality and business continuity options for our operations. One of these applications moved our GeoRemote program from a remote desktop connection to a web connection. This allows users to access the system without having to download special software or use another application for connection. After moving to our V3 program, we began to see the GeoRemote usage move from 7% to 13% over the last few months of the year. By year end, we were even between the GeoRemote and the E-Ticket application with both averaging 13% of the total locate request volume. The benefit of the GeoRemote application is that it does not require any interaction from the staff of Alabama 811 to complete the processing of the locate requests therefore allowing them to be handled with no overheard cost to our members. The GeoRemote program is available to current Alabama 811 users and requires a brief training session before activating the program. We have received great feedback from the users of the new program and we look forward to making the program even stronger in 2013.

One area we are focusing on to help target our marketing messages is analyzing the damage data we are able to obtain through the CGA Damage Information Reporting Tool (DIRT). Alabama 811 entered approximately 840 damage reports for 2012 as reported to us during the year. These reports are entered monthly to help gather statistical data regarding damages, where they occur and the potential root cause for them. This year’s annual summary includes graphs and charts reflecting this information. We encourage all of our members to register at www.cga-dirt.com and enter your own damage information to assist us with building a truer picture of where our efforts should be directed regarding damage prevention.

As 2013 begins, Alabama 811 continues to appreciate the support we receive from our member companies and the excavating community. We look forward to using this year to improve on the technologies in our operation to make damage prevention easier for all stakeholders involved. Watch for new web applications that can accessed via our website and mobile devices for placing and updating locate requests, monitoring locate request transmissions and management.

Thank you for a successful 2012 and we look forward to 2013.
