From the CEO

2 Shelter Tails

Dear Friends,

As you will see when you read further in this report, the last five years have been a period of continuous growth for Woods Humane Society. 2019 was another record-breaking year!

Adoptions, the heart of our work – and the work of our hearts – grew by 10% over 2018 and in December, Woods North County celebrated an amazing milestone, their 1,000th adoption for the year. And Woods cared for more animals already living in our community through:

• High-quality, low-cost spay/neuter for the public

• Monthly vaccine and microchip clinics

• Positive reinforcement training classes for dogs

• Partnerships to provide trap-neuter-return for community cats

Volunteer hours shot up by 30%! Every day of the year volunteers stepped up to help us care for our animals, and so much more. Our partnership with Cal Poly to mentor future teachers made it possible to bring humane education lessons to even more children throughout the county.

Engaging volunteers, and others, in our mission is a critical component for continued growth. Generous supporters like you have ensured that we’ve had the resources necessary to impact the lives of more animals, and the people who love them, than ever before. Thank you!

The coming year will bring challenges, new achievements, some heartache and much joy. Together, I know we can make it a great year for pets on the Central Coast.

Sincerely,

Neil TrentChief Executive Officer

Charlene Rosales, President Mike Terry, Vice President Terry Miron, Secretary Kandy K. Noel, Treasurer

AdopTionSOur adoption counselors help homeless animals find a loving home and match people with the perfect companion. Support doesn’t end when new pets leave the building. Staff members check in during the first days and weeks following adoption and are always available for questions.

CAnine TrAiningWoods University uses positive reinforcement training which allows dogs and puppies to learn faster and without fear. With eight different classes to choose from, dogs and their people can find the perfect curriculum to improve manners and build confidence, while having fun together.

SpAy/neuTerSpay/neuter is the humane solution to animal overpopulation. High-quality, low-cost spay/neuter surgeries are available at both locations for cats and dogs already in homes. Services are also available for community cats – homeless cats living on their own.

MiCroChipS And VACCinATionSMonthly clinics in both locations help keep pets healthy and microchips will help them find their way home if they are lost. Available treatments include: Rabies shots, DAPP/Bordetella for dogs, FVRCP for cats, flea treatment and deworming.

rehoMing ASSiSTAnCeWoods finds homes for litter after litter of kittens and puppies and new families for cats and dogs who need rehoming. Woods offers a safe, welcoming refuge for pets and reassurance to the people who turn to us for help.

A FULL-SERVICE HUMANE SOCIETY

TrAnSfer pArTnerShipSPeople in our adoption-savvy community open their hearts and homes to homeless pets giving Woods the ability to transfer cats and dogs from other, often struggling, shelters in nearby counties. We also partner with San Luis Obispo County Animal Services to ensure they do not run out of space.

huMAne eduCATionMaking the world a better place for animals starts by creating a more humane community. Woods engages children by bringing a carefully crafted humane education curriculum to schools, providing meaningful volunteer opportunities at our shelters, and hosting Critter Camps during school breaks.

VolunTeer And foSTer TeAMSThe contributions of volunteers are essential to our work. They provide enrichment for adoptable animals, support for surgical staff and take on a wide variety of tasks. Foster volunteers open their homes to animals who need special attention until they are ready to enter the adoption program.

Yes, we do adoptions… and so much more…

Year In Review 20193,385 animals found loving homes.

1,042 dogs • 334 puppies • 1,004 cats • 1,005 kittens

Our veterinary team performed 6,427 spay and neuter surgeries and, through our monthly clinics, provided 874 vaccines and 124 microchips.

6,340 children participated in one of our Humane Education programs, almost 19% more than 2018.

686 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens were fostered until ready to enter our adoption program.

3,584 animals arrived at Woods in need of a second chance. 1,914 were transferred from other shelters; 1,668 came from people who needed help to rehome a pet or litter; 2 kittens were born.

We celebrated positive outcomes for 98% of our animals.

Volunteers gave 36,204 hours of service, equivalent to 16 full-time staff positions and did an estimated 110,000 pounds of laundry!

Woods University provided training for 412 dogs and puppies.

The power of 63,000 followers on social media helped animals find homes quickly, freeing up space so more lives could be saved.

“We absolutely love Rhea. She’s just a love who is an amazing addition to our family. She is an absolute joy to have around. I can’t say it enough. I got home from work today and she was so happy to see me! Came out and greeted me with tail wagging and kisses galore! She is such a special, sweet girl and we already can’t imagine life without her sweet gentle presence. Thank you so much. She is a gift.”

A Legacy of GivingBequests are an integral part of the financial stability enjoyed by Woods Humane Society. Time after time funds provided by visionary donors have allowed Woods to grow and expand – allowed dreams for the future to become reality. The completion of the final stages of our facility in San Luis Obispo, the creation of a new spay/neuter clinic in Atascadero, and the addition of staff members whose efforts have driven our increased adoption numbers, are the lasting legacy of those who have included Woods in their estate plans. We gratefully acknowledge the members of our community whose legacy gifts came to us in 2019.

For more information about leaving a planned gift, please contact Branna Still at (805) 543-9316 x 17 or [email protected]. To learn more about including your pets in your estate plan or attending one of our quarterly luncheons, please contact Emily L’Heureux at (805) 543-9316 x 33 or [email protected].
