Following the visit of the President and other dignitaries, the Assistant‐Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Nakatani signed the official WHO‐FIP Joint Statement on the Role of the Pharmacist in Tuberculosis Care and Control with FIP President Dr Michel Buchmann. This statement will set the stage for increased pharmacist involvement in the prevention of and care of patients with tuberculosis; a timely and relevant issue considering the spread of tuberculosis in India. The landmark statement establishes a series of measures to help detect TB, offer treatment support to TB patients, and substantially reduce the number of deaths from TB. This would be achieved by encouraging the FIP's network of two million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists around the world to become fully engaged in national TB care and control efforts. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Hiroki Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director‐General for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases, welcomed the new accord with FIP: "Pharmacists can be the gatekeepers to vital TB health services. WHO welcomes the opportunities that further collaboration with the federation's network of pharmacists will bring in helping many people with tuberculosis gain early access to the care and treatment they need." His comments were echoed by Dr Michel Buchmann, the President of FIP: "While recognizing the broader role of pharmacists in the development and use of anti‐TB medicines, this Joint Statement focuses on the role of pharmacists directly involved in the care of people with TB. The International Pharmaceutical Federation will endeavor to support WHO and their Member States in enabling national tuberculosis programmes and national

• Mr. Eugene Winifred, Senior Faculty, Academic Center for Clinical Studies, Bangalore -
Topic: Clinical Research on 28.03.2012. He said although it typically takes 10 to 12 years and millions of dollars to bring one new drug to market, the success rate is small. In the developing world, no company or institute wants to, or can, invest such time and resources for a marginal improvement in responses over existing therapies. Fortunately, in a majority of cases, clinical trials can provide answers regarding the use or not of a therapeutic agent that can benefit millions of patients worldwide. Being the second most populated country in the world, India can contribute significantly to global drug development programs. The foundation of knowledge based industries in India was laid down by the information technology industry, and there is no reason why clinical research cannot follow in those footsteps. Indian investigators and clinical research professionals have already demonstrated their medical and scientific skills by participating in multiple global clinical trials. It is time now to move forward to capitalize on the opportunity.
