Matthew Warr

Candidate’s Statement of Objectives

A good friend of mine – the former General Manager of another foreign chamber of commerce in South China – shared with me a trend that he observed during the eight years he spent in his role: newly employed staff spent the first year learning their role, the second year executing what they had learnt during the first year, but it wasn’t until the third year that they truly understood their role and were performing at their very best. This is the same for me at AustCham South China (“AustCham SC”). Since arriving in Guangzhou in March 2016 I have been heavily involved in AustCham SC, and have already served two years as a Board Director since December 2017. This has enabled me to develop an in-depth understanding of how AustCham SC works across all its different areas, including events, marketing, committees, finances, governance, human resources, and membership. Some of my contributions as a Board Director over the past two years include:

Establishing AustCham SC’s first business services committee (with support from the Australian-Consulate General in Guangzhou);

Co-hosting and delivering legal seminars with AustCham SC, as part of my full-time role as a Legal Consultant at Zhong Lun Law Firm;

Serving on the Greater Bay Area Committee (a joint initiative between AustCham SC and AustCham Hong Kong);

Serving on a number of internal AustCham Board committees, including the membership committee, governance committee, and information and content committee; and

Regularly supporting and attending AustCham SC events Moving into 2020, I have three main objectives as a Board Director:

Business services committee: Build on the momentum and develop the business services committee into an active platform whose objective is to bring together AustCham SC members in the business services sectors to contribute to and shape an annual schedule of seminars and workshops focused on priority issues of interest to the AustCham and broader Australia-China community

Membership growth and maintenance: as someone with an extensive business and social network in South China, developed over four years living here, grow AustCham SC’s membership by promoting AustCham SC throughout my network, make introductions to the AustCham SC Secretariat, meet with potential members when necessary, and maintain relations with and deliver value to current members

Digital pilot project: AustCham SC has recently started a new ‘digital pilot project’, which will involve more closely engaging with and delivering value to

Page 15: Annual General Meeting 2019 - South China€¦ · General Manager of Pran Wines, a leading Australian Wine importer in China. Baron started Pran Wines China in year 2012 and has now

our members online through a regular newsletter and other means. Part of this will involve gathering interesting content from our members in the form of industry updates and case studies. I look forward to working closely with the AustCham SC Secretariat on this to provide interesting case studies on some of the common problems faced by Zhong Lun’s clients, and how we solved them.

Those who are in involved with AustCham SC know that I am committed to serving our members and the wider Australia-China business community. However, I am only just getting started. I possess a strong desire to continue making a genuine contribution to the growth of AustCham SC and to the development of the China-Australia bilateral relationship, and am committed and passionate in making a real difference. And I strongly believe that continuing on into my third year as an AustCham SC Board Director will allow me to deliver much more value than I have in my first two years.

Mette Pausgaard

Candidate’s Biography Founder and CEO of Mimir Consulting

Understanding how we can become our best selves and use this best version of

ourselves for the greater good in a world of change is a very ambitious mission I have

set myself. But a teacher once shared a quote which I have since been using as a

guide. “Reach for the moon and if you miss you will be amongst the stars.“

I grew up in Denmark and moved to England in my late teens. Decades later I moved

to China. This has transformed me into a global citizen and embrace being

surrounded by people from different corners of the world and get insights,

inspiration and understanding.

As an educator at heart, with a passion for learning and growth, I understand and

have seen the importance of setting high goals and targets. We live in a VUCA world

and only have one life to achieve one's potential and ambition in this lifetime.

Having worked in education and corporate training for decades, I have combined my

knowledge, experience and insights and now growing Mimir Consulting.

We are all facing a world of uncertainty and this is not something new, but what is

that it will happen at a rate faster than ever before. Therefore, what I focus on is

Emotional Intelligence and Coaching to grow individuals to make an impact. To train

and develop leaders through Emotional Intelligence, Coaching is true

transformational learning. When I on a weekly basis receive personal thanks for the

difference I have made to peoples lives, I am grateful for the skills I have acquired

throughout my career and to pass this on so others can make a difference too.

We need to lead with understanding and compassion to truly make an impact and

innovate to grow together to make a serious change and fulfil our potential.

To reach the moon takes more than just one person, but we must grow one person

at a time. As individuals, we constantly have to manage our gap between stimulus

and response. This is where we truly grow and make a difference.

Candidate’s Statement of Objectives

To grow Austcham, as a chamber of value, where members will happily activate

auto-renew their membership with. It will provide members with diversity,

innovative experiences, when interacting with the chamber and its services. This will

support the members to achieve their own objectives in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain,

Complex and Ambiguous) world. This is done by being connected to the right people

and having access to the knowledge they need to succeed. To achieve the above I

will work hard with other board members to align on common objectives, action

them and work as one force to bring added value for Austcham members.
