AlliSWORTH Secretary [ 97 ] PLANT PATHOLOGY FIELD DAY, LONG ASHTON 25 June 1943 The Eighteenth Annual Plant Pathology Field Day was held at the Long Ashton Research Station, Bristol, by kind permission of the Director, Prof . B. T. B. Barker, M.A., on Friday, 25 June [9'13' About twenty visitors assembled at Long Ashton for a picnic lunch after which parties were made up to visit the exhibits and demonstrations prepared by the Station Staff. The subjects dealt with were: Manurial deficiency symptoms in fruit and vegetables; Spraying techniques and appliances; Potato virus dis eases; Didymella on tomato; New developments 11l fungi- cides; Bio-assays of fungicidal value; Mechanism of fungicidal action; Yeasts and cider making; and a new form of cider sickness. The exhibits were explained and discussed by the following: The Director, the Deputy Director (Dr T. Wallace), and Messrs Kearns, Marsh, Charley, Martin, Croxall, Hickman, Wilkinson, Wain and Campbell. All the demonstrations were greatly appreciated and sincere thanks are due to the Director and Staff of the Long Ashton Research Station for the trouble they took to make the meeting both instructive and interesting. The weather played its part nobly and everyone agreed that the meeting was a great success. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 11 December 1943 The Annual General Meeting was held in the rooms of the Linnean Society of London on Saturday, II December 194-3, with the President, Dr S. P. Wiltshire, in the Chair. After the Minutes of the last Annual Meeting had been read and signed, the President announced with deep regret the deaths of five members: Mr A. W. Bartlett, Sir E. J. Butler, Dr Howard A. Kelly, Dr M. Mitra (who died in 1942), and Dr G. Morgan. In the course of comments on the past year, the President reported that as a result of recommendations by the Joint Committee set up by the Society and the Association of Applied Biologists the Council of the Association had recently appointed a Plant Pests and Diseases Committee so that the Society's Plant Pathology Committee could now devote all its energies to mycological aspects of plant pathology. He also drew attention to the need for manuscripts intended for publication in the Transactions to be kept as briefas possible on account of the paper shortage and the great increase in printing costs. After he had expressed the Society's thanks to the Linnean Society for its hospitality, the year's accounts were submitted by Mr A. A. Pearson and adopted. The following officers and councillors for [944 were then elected: President, R. W. Marsh, M.A.; Vice-Presidents, G. Smith and the two past-presidents, S. P. Wiltshire and Miss E. M. Blackwell; General Secretary, J. Ramsbottom; Secretary, G. C. Ainsworth; Treasurer, A. A. Pearson; Editors, B: Barnes and H. Wormald; Councillors, Miss 1\1. A. Brett, A. H. Campbell and Miss L. E. Hawker (to replace R. V. Harris, N. C. Preston and G. Smith). The Plant Pathology Committee's nominations ofR. W. G. Dennis, K. St G. Cartwright and N. C. Preston (to replace W. J. Dowson, W. P. K. Findlay and R. W. Marsh] were agreed to. Five new members were elected, making twenty-one for the year. After the General Secretary had indicated Council's tentative proposals for 1944 there was an adjournment until 2 o'clock when the President delivered his address entitled, 'The organization of the study of systematic mycology'. A vote of thanks to Dr Wiltshire concluded the meeting.
