Words from the Director General
Welcome to Taiwan!
Taiwan is an island blessed with weather that is like spring year-round and abundant natural beauty. It is also a land with a rich culture, thriving industries and highly advanced technology. From high mountain to the deep blue sea, small towns to big cities, Taiwan offers new experiences at every turn.
This travel guide presents 18 tour routes to cities and towns throughout Taiwan, including well-known scenic destinations like Maokong, Jiufen, Guanxi, Lugang, Anping, and Qijin. Over 100 attractions are introduced along with Taiwan's top festivals and events, such as the Yanshui Beehive Rocket Festival, Pingxi Heavenly Lantern Festival, Kending Spring Scream, and Amis Harvest Festival. You can also find out more about Taiwan's delicious local cuisine, from Hsinchu-style rice noodles and Meinong flat rice noodles to Keelung tempura and Chiayi chicken rice. We hope you will take the time to thoroughly enjoy them all and to discover the many irresistible charms that have earned Taiwan the name "Formosa," beautiful island.
Travel is about experiencing a new land to the fullest. Take a stroll among the bright lights at Kaohsiung's Urban Spotlight, or soak away the stress of life in the tranquility of the Jiaoxi Hot Springs in Yilan. Whether you're ready for the fun and energy of the big city or an escape to a rustic town, a cultural excursion or natural retreat, expect a journey of rich rewards during your visit to Taiwan!

★Currency and Changing MoneyThe currency used in Taiwan is the
New Taiwan (NT) Dollar. Banknotes come in denominations of NT$2000, NT$1000, NT$500, NT$200, and NT$100; coins come in denominations of NT$50, NT$20, NT$10, NT$5, and NT$1. One U.S. dollar is about NT$29 (as of May 2011). Money can be exchanged at Taoyuan and Kaohsiung international airports, and at large tourist hotels.
★Tax RefundTravelers holding foreign passports are eligible for a refund of
the value-added tax (VAT) on purchases of NT$3,000 and above (including tax) on a single day at the same posted VAT-refund stores, so long as they depart Taiwan within 30 days of the purchase. The buyers must obtain a VAT-refund application, bearing the store’s Unified Invoice stamp, from the store where the purchases are made. Prior to leaving Taiwan, the travelers must take the application together with the tax-refund goods (which must not have been used) to the VAT refund counter at the airport to obtain the refund.
Remember—the date of departure must be no more than 30 days after the date of purchase.

★Postal ServiceGeneral operating hours for post offices in Taiwan are 8am-5pm
Monday through Friday, but some post offices provide services on weekends and holidays as well. Dajia Straw Mats 大甲草蓆
Quality and Comfort
Straw hat and mat weaving once employed about 80,000 people along the coastal areas of Taiwan during the industry's post-war heyday. Today, Dajia remains the best-known center of these traditional products. Made mainly of rushes harvested from the banks of the Da-an River, the hats and mats are favored for their soft texture and comfortable feel.

A Picture of Old- World Charm
Lugang was a ma jo r t ransshipment point for goods on Taiwan's west coast dur ing the mid- to late-18th century. The commercial trade also supported a vibrant cultural life and drove population growth in the town. As to the name of the town, which means "Deer Harbor," some believe it is a reference to the deer that once frequented this area, and others to the antler shape of the town harbor. Still others claim it to be an adaptation of a Pingpu (plains) aboriginal word.

Tianhou (Mazu) Temple 天后宮
Drawing the Faithful
for Centuries
Tianhou (Mazu) Temple bustles daily, and nightly, with the activity of worshippers and visitors. The pervasive smoke of incense attests to the popularity of the temple. The temple's elaborately carved (though smoke blackened) octagonal plafond and other artistic embellishments make this an excellent place to appreciate the beauty of Taiwanese temple architecture.

Shelter from the Wind
Nine Turns Lane i s a clever solution to an age-old problem in Lugang, namely the strong gales coming in from the sea. The early residents of the town figured out that they could block the wind by designing the lane in a zigzag fashion with T-shaped intersections.

In order to seek divine protection from Guansheng Dijun, the townspeople held a ceremony on the god's birthday, lighting firecrackers to welcome the deity and also to drive off evil spirits. Today, thousands of people fill the streets in Yanshuei for this pyrotechnic spectacle during the Lantern Festival.

The Donggang King Boat Ceremony is held every three years in Donggang Township. The ceremony, which lasts for several days, is to welcome the god Wang Ye for his inspection tour of the mortal world and to ask for the god to dispel evil spirits and bless the town. At the end of Wang Ye's tour, the people of Donggang build and ceremoniously burn a "King Boat" to send the deity back to heaven.
