OUR MISSION

2016 staff

For 34 years Camp Awakening has offered summer camp programs that give youth with physical disabilities the opportunity to gain independence, make lasting friendships, develop confidence, and accomplish things that they never thought possible.

With the third and final phase of Camp Awakening’s Strategic Plan 2011+ concluding this year, staff and board members spent much of 2016 reviewing our strategic priorities for the future. We will focus on three main areas: Programs, Visibility & Outreach, and Capacity. We want to ensure our programs are relevant and reflect our campers’ and families’ interests and special needs; increase awareness of our programs and expertise; and strengthen organizational capacity and sustainability. With our milestone 35th Anniversary season just around the corner, we are excited for the future!

However, none of this would be possible with the incredible support & generosity of individuals, organizations and community groups – people like YOU! – who believe in our mission and help send kids to camp each year.

Thank you again for helping kids with physical disabilities make friends with other campers just like them and accomplish things that they never thought they could before!

CAMPERS SAY THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT CAMP ARE…

“Making a new friend with spina bifida just like me.”

“My friends! The chats I have with them are ones that I could only have at Camp Awakening.”

“Everything because it’s the outdoors and I can have a break from the city. I love nature.”

“I get to try new & fun activities that I have never tried before.”

“Being away from technology is awesome.”

“It’s a place to be myself. A chance to try activities not otherwise available. People are non-judgmental.”

WHAT DID YOU LEARN AT CAMP?

CAMPER PARENTS SAY…Camp Awakening has offered a safe and positive environment for my daughter, to be welcomed in with open arms and heart.”

My son has developed a sense of self confidence and willingness to accept responsibility through his years of camp. We have seen him grow from a timid, homesick camper to a full-on cowabunga kind of camper who is much better at dealing with uncertainty and the unknown. Thanks Camp Awakening!”

Malika had an incredible experience and developed some great life skills, like wearing her AFO shoes by herself. Also, with no experience knowing how to paddle a canoe she was able to do it with guidance from the staff. She felt so refreshed and we feel proud that she could stay on her own, with of course the wonderful support from Camp Awakening staff and team members, and is looking forward to next summer already.”

“ “

“Camp Awakening was such a powerful experience for Shay. It provided an opportunity for our son to be challenged physically, mentally and emotionally. After a week at Camp Awakening, Shay came home with more confidence and a stronger sense of self. We really could not have asked for more from this experience. Shay can’t wait to return next year to reconnect with his new friends and take on more of life’s adventures!”

CAMP HIGHLIGHTS 20165th year of the Youth Leadership Development Retreat! This unique co-ed program is offered at YMCA Geneva Park in Orillia in partnership with March of Dimes Canada for young adults 19-24 year of age. It’s a busy week focused on leadership training; life & social skill development; active living; and enjoyment of the great outdoors.

Toronto Star photojournalist Jim Rankin spent a day on canoe trip with the MILES campers in July and published an awesome photo essay. Thanks again Jim!

Awakening alumni camper and 4x Paralympian Graeme Murray visited the boys in August and spent the morning hosting a sledge hockey clinic. He brought along his Bronze Medal from the Sochi Games for all the campers to check out!

Thanks to generous donors a new storage shed was constructed adjacent to the tennis courts at Camp Oconto to house Camp Awakening’s six sport wheelchairs.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT: YEAR IN REVIEW

Undergraduate student Megan D’Souza from the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto, completed a research project about Camp Awakening titled Camp Counsellor Experiences With Youth With Physical Disabilities: A Qualitative Case Study Analysis. Five main themes were found: 1. Past performance and mastery experiences 2. The importance of vicarious experiences 3. The importance of the varying level of integration within camp 4. The benefits to the host campers 5. The “Challenge but Safe mentality”. Contact the office for the full paper.

McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business MBA’s for Impact group submitted their pro bono project providing recommendations to enhance Camp Awakening corporate fundraising strategy.

A team of volunteers from St. Clement’s School helped out at the camp office during their Community Day in December. Many thanks for helping us reorganize our storage area and take an accurate inventory!

Through an anonymous donor and the Jays Care Foundation 8 campers and their families were able to enjoy all the amenities of a suite for an August Toronto Blue Jays game. The campers were featured on the jumbotron and got to meet World Series Champion and All-Star pitcher Duane Ward!

Selected by both Weston Bakeries - Concord and Weston Bakeries – Carrier Drive as the beneficiary of their Seeding Stronger Communities employee

fundraising campaign. The campaign has raised an incredible $26,000 for Camp Awakening over the past 4 years!

COMMUNITY SUPPORT: YEAR IN REVIEW

Team Camp Awakening was well-represented at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on October 16th. Runners raised more than $3,400 and more than 20 community members volunteered at one of the on-course water stations.

Big Night IN – our “non-event” event – raised an amazing $4,500 through an on-line auction and donations in lieu of buying an actual ticket.

Camp Awakening was selected as 1 of 10 National Finalists in the GoodLife Kids Foundation’s Win 4 Kids Contest for programs across Canada that are helping kids get active. Thrilled to receive the support of GoodLife and a $5,000 grant to help kids be active at camp!

The 4th annual Family Hockey Challenge organized by The Jordana Lokash Foundation raised $3,500 towards canoe tripping equipment. This is such a unique event for families, allowing adults and kids to play on the same team, while non-hockey playing siblings and parents enjoy a ‘Family Fun Room’ with arts & crafts, board games, and a DJ.

Selected as the beneficiary of Spring One Of A Kind Show & Sale which raised over $500 to send kids to camp!

Rockford’s Bar & Grill hosted their 6th golf tournament at Silver Lakes Golf & Conference Centre raising over $3,000 to send kids to camp.
