No stranger to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, I exaggerate

only slightly in saying I was born and raised here. My family and I actually lived in a house on the fairgrounds for about 12 years.

I’ve worked on the fairgrounds in various capacities for 20 years, including 16 years in the Events Department where I managed a wide variety of events ranging from 5K runs and booking fair time entertainment, to the Good Guys Hot Rod show. I jokingly refer to it as the summer job I never quit! My father, Larry Bauman, worked for 36 years as Chief of Operations and my stepmother, Barbara (B.J.) Bauman, familiar to many of you, managed the Del Mar National for nine years.

In contemplating my new position at the helm of the 70th Annual Del Mar National Horse Show, a few phrases come to mind. For example, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and “the new broom sweeps clean.” As the new manager, it can be tempting to put my signature on it, but I prefer to work with and learn from staff members as they do their jobs. What I’ve observed, and am proud to be associated with, is a true collaborative effort. We strive each year to improve and present the finest in equestrian competition and entertainment, so in that sense, it certainly “ain’t broke.” But like any well-oiled machine, it requires consistent and meticulous maintenance. So, as the “new broom,” I am honored instead, to sweep in the platinum anniversary of the Del Mar National Horse Show and look forward to getting to know our extraordinary equestrian community better!

special classes

808 $10,000 del mar national horse show grand prix hunter derby

ENTRY FEE: $350A qualifying class for the $25,000 GPHD Final on October 16 at the Del Mar Intenational. Open to all horses and riders. All horses will jump a course of at least ten (10) fences. Riders will have the option to compete at 3´6˝ or at 3´3.̋ The course will have at least two (2) option fences set at 2˝ to 3˝ above respective heights. The options in the 3´3˝ section will not exceed 3´5.̋ The format of this class will be a two (2) round hunter derby.

COURSE: Round 1 will be a hunter derby course with a time allowed. The course will be measured at 375m per minute. Judging will begin when the horse goes through the timers. Horses starting before the tone will be eliminated. The course designer will have the option of adjusting the time allowed within the first three competitors. For every second or fraction thereof under the time allowed, one (1) point will be added to the judges score. For every second or fraction thereof above the time allowed, one (1) point will be deducted from the judge’s scores. All scores within 7 points of the leader will return for the second round.

The second round will be a shortened course of 7–8 jumps with a time allowed. For every second or fraction thereof above the time allowed, one (1) point will be deducted from the judge’s scores. No bonus points will be given for being under the time allowed.

There will be a tone to indicate that competitors must start within 45 seconds. Should a competitor fail to start within the 45 seconds then the clock will begin and the score will reflect the extra time taken. Horses judged on performance, way of going, style and handiness. Horses will be severely penalized for excessive speed and dangerously leaving out strides. The judges will factor all jumping faults into their scores.

ACCUMULATION POINTS FOR THE FINAL: Points from qualifying classes will be awarded as the number in the class plus two (2). The second place horse receives points equal to the number of horses in the class, and so on. For example, if there are 25 horses, the first place horse receives 27 points, second place receives 25 points, and third place receives 24, and so on. The order of go will be in reverse order of points accumulated from the qualifiers.

RIDER POOL: $50 per entry fee of each qualifying class and the Final will be added to a rider pool. The top four (4) riders in the series will share in the total pool at the Final. The Final, plus all qualifying classes, will count towards the Rider Pool standings. Shares of the rider pool will be allocated based on the following breakdown: 1st 50%; 2nd 25%; 3rd 15%; 4th 10%. Any rider who fails to participate in award ceremonies throughout the series or at the Final will not be eligible for the Rider Pool and the next rider in the standings will move up in the awards. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

PRIZE MONEY: Prize money will pay to guaranty prize money to 8th place. Horses in the top eight (8) not returning for the second round will receive prize money equal to the entry fee that is deducted from the total prize money offered. Horses competing in the second round will be awarded the balance of the prize money according to the following table.

2. FEDERATION ENTRY AGREEMENT: By entering a Federation-licensed competition and signing this entry blank as the owner, lessee, trainer, manager, agent, coach, driver, rider, handler, vaulter or longeur and on behalf of myself and my principals, representatives, employees and agents, I agree that I am subject to the bylaws and rules of the United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. (the “Federation”) and the local rules of the competition. I agree to be bound by the bylaws and rules of the Federation and of the competition. I will accept as final the decision of the hearing committee on any question arising under the rules, and agree to release and hold harmless the competition, the Federation, their officials, directors and employees for any action taken under the rules. I represent that I am eligible to enter and/or participate under the rules, and every horse I am entering is eligible as entered. I also agree that as a condition of and in consideration of acceptance of entry, the Federation and/or the competition may use or assign photographs, videos, audios, cablecasts, or other likenesses of me and my horse taken during the course of the competition for the promotion, coverage or benefit of the competition, sport, or the Federation. Those likenesses shall not be used to advertise a product and they may not be used in such a way as to jeopardize amateur status. I hereby expressly and irrevocably waive and release any rights in connection with such use, including any claim to compensation, invasion of privacy, right of publicity, or to misappropriation. The construction and application of Federation rules are governed by the laws of the state of New York, and any action instituted against the Federation must be filed in New York state. (See GR908.4.)

3. ASSUMPTION OF RISK: By signing the entry blank, the owner, lessee, trainer, manager, agent, coach, driver, rider, handler, vaulter or loungeur acknowledges that horseback riding, particularly jumping, is a dangerous activity and involves inherent risks that may cause serious injury and in some cases death because of the unpredictable nature and irrational behavior of horses, regardless of their training and past performance and expressly assumes all such inherent risks whether identified herein, in the entry blank, or in the federation rules and regulations. A horse, without warning or any apparent cause, can buck, stumble, fall, rear, bite, kick, run, make unpredictable movements, spook, jump obstacles, step on a person’s foot or push a person-all of which may cause the rider or observer to fall or be jolted,

resulting in serious injury of death. A horse may also become loose and cause injury to an observer or rider or to another horse-a loose horse can run at full gallop in a panic and run into objects or persons or other horses. The show ground facilities are bordered by highways/roads and thus noise from traffic and other sources occurs that can and will cause a horse to unexpectedly spook or react quickly. The show ground facilities contain roads or driveways that are traversed by cars, golf carts, tractors, trailers and heavy equipment all of which may spook a horse. The above warnings and risks are meant as an example of some of the risks that are inherent and may be encountered but it is agreed this is not an exhaustive list and there are numerous additional conditions and/or events that may result in injuries while participating in the competition and/or being present on the show ground facility.

4. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY: Every horse entered for competition will be under the control of the Horse Show Management, but Horse Show Management will, in no case, be responsible for any loss or damage that may occur, and it shall be a condition of entry that each exhibitor shall hold the Horse Show, its Directors and employees, the 22nd District Agricultural Association, and the Del Mar Fairgrounds harmless for any loss or accident to his or her horses or equipment which may occur from sickness, fire or otherwise. Misrepresentation on the Entry Form shall result in forfeiture of trophy, ribbon, prize money, and possible exclusion from subsequent shows.

5. MANAGEMENT: Horse Show Management reserves the right to itself to interpret all questions and conditions in regard to or arising out of an incident to the show without claims for damages or recourse of any kind. All questions not covered in these Rules and Regulations shall be decided by Horse Show Management— their decision to be final. Horse Show Management reserves the right to refuse, accept conditionally or to cancel any entries, disqualify riders or exhibitors, prohibit exhibition of entries and cancel award prizes, without claim for damages; to change any course, to cancel or combine any unfilled classes, or to reschedule classes, after due notice to exhibitors; to change rings or rotate or change judges and officials; to change specifications in jumper classes in order to facilitate the time schedule. There must be ten or more entries in a class. If not, Management reserves the right to combine or cancel. Management reserves the right to limit entries in a class. Refused entries will be returned. Management reserves the right to combine split sections in Green Working, Amateur-Owner, Pony or Junior Hunter if fewer than 10 entries are received by closing date.

6. THE FOLLOWING ARE REQUIRED FOR EACH ENTRY: A) One owner and one horse per Entry Form. Form may be reproduced; B) Social Security number and signature of owner or authorized agent; C) Name, mailing address, telephone and signature of trainer; D) Name, mailing address, telephone and signature of all riders; E) Name and age of minor exhibitors and signature of parent or guardian. A trainer’s signature may not substitute; F) Correct description of horse including name, recording number or ID number; G) Applicable membership numbers; H) Please use class numbers from Class List — not Tentative Schedule.

7. MINOR EXHIBITORS: Parents or guardians of minor exhibitors shall hold the 22nd District Agricultural Association and the Del Mar Fairgrounds harmless for injury to such minor(s). The signature of instructors, agents, or other unrelated persons will not be accepted.

All bills for veterinary, farrier services and feed/bedding are due and payable during the Show. Management reserves the right to deduct any unpaid veterinary, farrier and feed/bedding bills from premium money due the exhibitor. Any exhibitor not meeting his obligations to the official Show Veterinarian, farrier and feed/bedding vendor will be termed an undesirable exhibitor and entries from that exhibitor may not be accepted at subsequent shows.

12. RETURNED CHECKS OR DECLINED CREDIT CARDS: Checks returned by the bank for any reason, or declined credit cards, are regarded as a most serious offense and will be handled according to the following procedure: A $50 penalty will be assessed for every returned check or 10% of the face value of the check, whichever is greater. Accounts will be given 10 days to be paid in full with cash or cash equivalent or they will be reported to the USEF, PCHA or other appropriate association(s) for further disciplinary action. Checks will not be deposited a second time. Prize money checks will not be released to anyone with an outstanding balance owed from returned checks or declined credit cards.

13. UNPAID CHARGES: Any exhibitor leaving the show with an unpaid balance of entry fees will be billed for these charges and a $50 billing fee may be added to the total due. Until these charges are settled, any prize money due to the exhibitor will be withheld and all further entries of rider and owner will be returned.

25. ANY RIDER OR TRAINER: Failing to leave the ring after the course walk has been closed will be eliminated from the class.

26. NUMBERS: Management will provide a number card for each competitor which shall be worn clearly visible to the judge at all times when in competition. Riders wearing the wrong number or no number at all MAY be eliminated from the class by the judges.

27. CONFLICTS: It is the intention of Management to avoid delays in competition. Competitors with conflicts must arrange their order with the Gate Stewards so that they will not hold up a class. TRAINER CONFLICTS WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED. In any case, a ring will not be held for longer than two (2) minutes for any horse or rider before eliminating the competitor, regardless of conflicts.

28. DOGS: All dogs must be on a leash at all times while on the show grounds. Loose dogs create a serious safety hazard to exhibitors and their horses. Dogs should be kept in the stable area. Loose dogs will be picked up and detained and the owner will be fined $100. Management reserves the right to call Animal Control to have an animal removed from the premises. No dogs are allowed in the seating area. The Del Mar National Horse Show appreciates your efforts in complying with this very important safety policy.

29. WEST NILE VIRUS VACCINATION INFORMATION: The management of the 22nd DAA and the Organizing Committee of the Del Mar National Horse Show in consultation with respected veterinarians and local animal health authorities, strongly recommend and urge that all horses attending the 2015 Del Mar National Horse Show follow a two-part vaccination protocol consisting of a primary vaccination, followed by a booster 3–6 weeks later. Exhibitors should be prepared to provide proof of vaccination upon request of horse show management. Exhibitors should consult with their own veterinarians to effectively manage the possible effect and threat of West Nile Virus. Should you have any questions, contact the Equestrian Office at (858) 792-4288.

30. MAIL/TELEPHONE: All mail from exhibitors should be sent as follows: c/o Del Mar National Horse Show Office, Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar, CA, 92015. Phone numbers: Show Office (858) 792-4288; Del Mar Fairgrounds (858) 755-1161.

31. JUDGES: It is the purpose of Management to run the Horse Show at the highest possible level of sportsmanship. Management used the utmost care to select judges with broad experience and knowledge. The judges’ decisions in the show ring are their own responsibility and Management accepts no responsibility for those decisions.

32. PROTEST: Any exhibitor lodging a protest must first deposit $200 for a USEF member and $300 for a non-member paid to the Show Secretary, which sum shall be forfeited to the horse show if same is not sustained. Any rider, driver, handler, vaulter, lunger, exhibitor, owner, agent, trainer, or the parent of a junior exhibitor, or any Life Senior, or Junior member present at the competition may file a protest with the Show Committee of a licensed Competition or the Federation Hearing alleging violation of any Federation rules(s).

The protest must contain all information as specified in FR602.1 and must be: A) In writing; B) Signed by the protester; C) Addressed to the Show Committee of the competition at which the alleged violation occurred, or to the Hearing Committee; D) Accompanied by

a deposit of $200 if made by a Federation member or the parent of a junior exhibitor member or $300 if made by a non-member (if check payable to the competition or to the Federation): said deposit will be refunded in the event the protest is upheld, and; E) Received by the steward, technical delegate, a member of the Show Committee, the Competition Manager or the Competition Secretary within 48 hours of the occurrence of the alleged violation.

If made directly to the Hearing Committee, the protest must be received at the Federation office by the tenth business day following the last recognized day of the competition, or by the tenth business day following the date on which the alleged violation occurred if it occurred other than at a Licensed Competition. If the protest is sustained, the entries standing next in award shall be moved up accordingly.

33. HELMET RULE: All persons at Federation licensed hunter, jumper or hunter/jumper competitions in all Hunter, Jumper and Hunt Seat Equitation classes, when mounted anywhere on the competition grounds, must wear properly fastened protective headgear which meets or exceeds ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards for equestrian use and carries the SEI tag. It must be properly fitted with harness secured. This rule, effective April 1, 2012, puts the onus on parents and trainers to make sure all exhibitors wear one of 65 helmets currently approved by the ASTM-SEI. Under the rule, judges, stewards and show management are obligated to check out helmets they suspect may not be ASTM-SEI approved and to prevent all exhibitors from competing if the helmet does not comply with the new rule.

34. STATE OF CALIFORNIA DRUG TESTING RULES WILL APPLY: For a copy, contact the Show Office.

35. MINORS & MOTORIZED VEHICLES: Motorized vehicles will be used in the Stable Area ONLY. Minors who have a valid temporary license may operate the above described motorized vehicles as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a valid driver’s license. The parent(s), legal guardian(s), or individual who signs the entry blank as a parent or guardian of a minor operating a motorized vehicle in violation of this rule are solely responsible for any damages, claims, losses or actions resulting from that operation. Violations of this rule will be cause for sanctions against the parent(s), guardian(s), and/or trainer(s) who are responsible for the child committing the offenses. Penalties may include exclusion of the child, parent(s), guardian(s), and/or trainer(s) from the competition grounds for the remainder of the competition and charges being filed against any of the above individuals in accordance with Rule 6. Wheelchairs and other mobility assistance devices for individuals with disabilities are exempt from this rule.

36. PARKING: Allowed in designated areas only. Violators parked in NO PARKING ZONES and FIRE LANES will be issued citations and/or towed from the premises at the owner’s expense. There are Disabled parking areas in the Stable Area and public parking lot. Parking permits required in stable area.
