INTRODUCTION

Schools of public health have been educating professionals in the techniques of health preservation and

disease prevention and control since the first decades of the twentieth century. Some schools of public

health had their beginnings in university schools of medicine; others were conceived from the outset as

autonomous units within their parent institutions. In Fall 2010, there were 46 accredited schools of

public health in the United States, at 11 private and 35 public universities. Forty-six schools have been

included in this data report.

Unlike other health profession schools which emphasize a specific clinical discipline (for example medicine

or nursing), schools of public health educate a wide range of professionals, from biostatisticians and

epidemiologists to health administrators, community health educators and specialists in areas such as

managed care, environmental sciences, international health and the behavioral and social sciences.

The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) is the only national organization representing the

deans, faculty, and students of the 46 accredited schools of public health in the United States, Puerto

Rico, and Mexico. The schools educate over 26,000 students annually from every state in the U.S. and

most countries throughout the world. The schools of public health are the primary educational system

that trains personnel needed to operate public health, disease prevention and health promotion programs

in the United States. ASPH's principal purpose is to promote and improve the education and training of

professional public health personnel.

ASPH collects and compiles aggregate data on applications, acceptances, new enrollments, students, and

graduates in each school of public health. The information collected serves the schools and various

federal, state and local agencies and private institutions in planning and implementing their respective

public health training, research and service activities.

ASPH thanks the deans, faculty and staff of the schools of public health who made this data report

possible. In particular, we thank Dean Stan Lemeshow (Ohio State), chair, and the members of the

ASPH Data Advisory Committee.

The classification system for program areas was developed by the ASPH Data Advisory Committee in 1978 and has been

used since the 1979-80 academic year. The system undergoes periodic review and revision by the Committee, with the

approval of other appropriate committees and/or councils. Beginning in 2009, ‘General’ was added as a new program

area.

Under the ASPH data collection system, the schools report their applications, acceptances, new enrollments, students,

and graduates by the program area categories described above. Categorization is not always precise and there is some

variance each year due to reclassification. In addition, a number of schools have program areas that include two or more

of the ASPH categories. Finally, program areas within the schools are reorganized from time to time, with the result that

two or more areas that were once separate in the ASPH classification system are later reported as a combined area. For

these reasons, the data on program area should be viewed with caution.

Lastly, a number of schools allow multiple specializations. Applications, acceptances, new enrollments, students, and

graduates with dual specializations are recorded as ‘.5’ in each area and triple specializations are recorded as ‘.3’ in each

area. However, all numbers included in this report are rounded to a whole number.

HIGHLIGHTS AND TRENDS

In 2010, 46 accredited schools of public health existed in the United States, up from 24 accredited schools of public

health in 1988-89. The highlights and trends in this report represent the data collected from these schools, which are

accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). Forty-six ASPH member schools reported data for the

year 2010.

Beginning in 2009, ASPH collected data on applications, acceptances, and new enrollments for the calendar year (winter,

spring, summer, and fall semesters). Because of this, trend data from 2009 and beyond should be viewed with caution

as it includes data from 3 more semesters than previous years.

APPLICATIONS

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall 2010

ASPH collects data on applications rather than individuals. There is a centralized application service, SOPHAS, which has

been operational since 2007. However, because not all of our schools and programs participate, SOPHAS data are not

included in this report.

In 2010, there were 49,227 applications submitted. Submissions from female applicants constituted 71 percent of total

applications and foreign nationals constituted 23 percent of total applications. [Tables 1.1 and 1.2]

Program areas with the highest number of applications were epidemiology (19 percent), health services administration

(18 percent), health education/behavioral sciences (15 percent), other (9 percent), and general (8 percent). [Table 1.9]

Degree objectives with the highest number of applications were MPH (58 percent), PhD (16 percent), and MS (8 percent).

[Table 1.6]

Of the total applications in 2010, 51 percent were accepted. New enrollments represented 45 percent of acceptances and

23 percent of applicants. [Table 1.10]

Acceptance rates were higher for females (51 percent) than males (49 percent) and lower for foreign nationals (37

percent) than for U.S. citizens and permanent residents (55 percent). The program areas with the highest acceptance

rates were public health practice and program management with 58 percent and general public health studies with a rate

of 61 percent. The program area with the lowest acceptance rate was biostatistics with a rate of 42 percent. The degree

objectives with the highest acceptance rates were MSPH (67 percent), joint degree (64 percent), and other masters (61

percent). [Table 1.11]

APPLICATION TRENDS

2000-2010

Since 2000, applications have increased from 19,953 to 49,227 applications. [Table 1.15] Over the past ten years,

females have consistently applied to schools of public health in greater numbers than males. In 2000, females submitted

71 percent of applications, the same percentage as 2010. [Table 1.12]

NEW ENROLLMENTS

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall 2010

In 2010, there were 11,205 new enrollments representing 42 percent of the total fall enrollments in the schools. [Table

2.8] In 2009, there were 10,251 new enrollments representing 41 percent of total enrollments. [Table 2.9]

The proportion of new female students was 71 percent, while foreign students represented 15 percent of new

enrollments. [Tables 2.1 and 2.2] These proportions are similar to the total student enrollment for females and

foreign nationals. [Tables 3.1 and 3.2]

In 2010, the program areas with the largest concentrations of new enrollments were health services administration (2,106

or 19 percent), epidemiology (7,772 or 16 percent) health education/behavioral science (1,491 or 13 percent), and

general public health studies (1,305 or 12 percent). [Table 2.6] The degree objectives with the largest concentrations

of new enrollments were MPH (6,806 or 61 percent), MS (1,011 or 9 percent), and PhD (999 or 9 percent). [Table 2.4]

Trends for schools of public health for the past 10 years indicate that the percentage of new enrollments as a percentage

of acceptances and as a percentage of applications have been rather consistent, with a slight decrease in the past four

years. [Table 2.9]

STUDENTS

Fall 2010

There were 26,340 students enrolled in the schools in 2010, a 4 percent increase from last year (25,241). [Table 3.1]

Of this total, 71 percent were female and 15 percent were foreign nationals. [Tables 3.1 and 3.2]

In 2010, over half of the students (51 percent) were enrolled in MPH programs and 74 percent of the students were

enrolled in masters degree programs. The remaining 26 percent of the students were enrolled in doctoral degree

programs. [Table 3.6] A higher proportion of males (30 percent) pursue doctorates than females (25 percent), and a

higher proportion of foreign national students (37 percent) pursue doctorates than U.S. students (24 percent.) [Table

3.4]

There were some differences in program areas based on demographic characteristics. Females represented three times

the percentage of males enrolled in nutrition (3 percent female vs. 1 percent male), more than double the percentage of

males enrolled in health education/behavioral sciences (16 percent female vs. 6 percent male) and four times the

percentage in maternal and child health (4 percent female vs. 1 percent male). Males represented a greater percentage

than females enrolled in environmental sciences (10 percent male vs. 7 percent female). Foreign nationals represented

four times the percentage of U.S. citizens enrolled in biostatistics (17 percent foreign nationals vs. 4 percent U.S. citizens

while U.S. citizens represented more than double the percentage of foreign nationals enrolled in health

education/behavioral sciences (14 percent U.S. citizens vs. 6 percent foreign nationals). [Table 3.7]

Just about half (49 percent) of the students were enrolled in three program areas; health services administration (19

percent), epidemiology (17 percent), and health education/behavioral sciences (13 percent). [Table 3.9]

The program areas with the largest proportion of doctoral students were biostatistics (51 percent) and biomedical

sciences (41 percent), followed by other (39 percent). [Table 3.10]

In 2010, 25 percent of the students were part-time. The proportion of part-time students varied greatly among the

schools, from 0 percent to 69 percent. [Table 3.12]

Page 13: ANNUAL DATA REPORT · annual data report 2010 applications new enrollments winter, spring, summer, fall 2010 students fall 2010 graduates 2009-2010 trend data 1999-2010

9

STUDENT TRENDS

2000-2010

In 2010, there were 26,340 students enrolled in the schools of public health and in 2000 there were 16,019 students

enrolled, a 64 percent increase. [Table 3.18]

In 2010, female students represented 71 percent of total enrollments. This representation has been constant over the

past decade, but the number of female enrollees has increased 72 percent since 2000 compared with a 48 percent

increase of male enrollees. In 2010, foreign nationals constituted 15 percent of the total student body, slightly lower than

last year. [Table 3.13]

With regard to degree objective, there has been very little change since 2000. In 2010, over half (51 percent) of the

students were enrolled in MPH programs, 74 percent of enrolled students were in master’s degree programs and 26

percent in doctoral degree programs. [Table 3.5] In 2000, 53 percent of the students were enrolled in MPH programs,

77 percent were enrolled in master’s degree programs, and 23 percent were enrolled in doctoral degree programs.

[Table 3.16]

For the past ten years, the program areas that comprise the largest proportions of students (epidemiology, health

services administration, health education/behavioral sciences) have remained constant. [Table 3.17]

GRADUATES

2009-2010

There were 8,957 graduates in 2009-10, a 7 percent increase from 2008-09 (8,406). [Table 4.1] In 2009-10, females

represented 71 percent of total graduates and foreign nationals constituted 15 percent of total graduates. [Table 4.2]

These percentages are consistent with total student enrollment.

In 2009-10, the MPH degree was awarded to 60 percent of the total degree recipients and 86 percent of total degree

recipients were awarded master’s degrees. Doctoral degrees were awarded to 1,220 individuals or 14 percent of the total

degree recipients. The highest proportion of doctoral degree recipients was awarded to the PhD (9 percent) followed by

other doctoral at 3 percent. [Table 4.6] The same proportion of males (14 percent) and females (14 percent) received

doctoral degrees and a higher proportion of foreign nationals (17 percent) than U.S. citizens (13 percent) were awarded

doctoral degrees. [Table 4.4]

In 2009-10, 332 or 4 percent of graduates received a joint degree. The joint degree combination with the highest

concentration of graduates was the MD/MPH degree with 32 percent of all joint degree recipients, followed by joint

masters with 30 percent, and MBA/MPH at 13 percent. [Tables 4.8 and 4.9]

Overall, the program areas with the highest concentrations of graduates were health services administration (19 percent),

epidemiology (15 percent), other (15 percent), and health education/behavioral sciences (12 percent). [Table 4.12]

The program areas with the highest concentrations of doctoral degree recipients were biomedical sciences (33 percent)

and biostatistics (26 percent), followed by other (25 percent). [Table 4.7]

GRADUATE TRENDS

1999-2010

In 2009-10, there were 8,957 graduates from the schools of public health, a 52 percent increase from 1999-00 (5,879

graduates). In 1999-00, female graduates totaled 4,023 or 68 percent compared with 6,377 or 71 percent in 2009-10.

Female graduates have increased 59 percent since 1999-00, compared with an 39 percent increase in male graduates.

U.S. graduates have increased by 50 percent compared with a 79 percent increase in foreign national graduates. [Table

4.13]

Since 1999-00, the proportion of graduates with prior MD degrees has decreased from 12 percent to 6 percent in 2009-

10. In 2009-10, U.S. citizens comprised 56 percent of graduates with prior MD degrees and foreign nationals comprised

44 percent. [Table 4.15]

The MPH has remained the most commonly awarded degree over the past decade. It accounted for 59 percent of the

total degrees awarded in 2009-10. The MS degree represented 9 percent of total degrees; MHA/MHSA degree

represented 6 percent of total degrees; and the MSPH degree at 2 percent of total degrees. Since 1999-00, proportions

of degrees awarded have been mostly constant. [Table 4.16]

In 2009-10, the PhD degree was the most awarded doctoral degree and has been for over ten years. This degree

accounted for 9 percent of total degrees awarded; the DrPH represented 1 percent of total degrees.

The program areas that have grown most significantly in terms of the proportion of graduates since 1999-00 were other

(increase of 182 percent) and biomedical sciences (increase of 94 percent). Graduates of maternal and child health

decreased by 6 percent and graduates of international health decreased by 1 percent over this ten-year time frame.
