General Description: John Hopkins recently served as Senior Project Controls Manager for the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, and he has had management roles in the UT Research Foundation. John Hopkins discussed his career path, including his work with NASA, and his recent work with solar electricity initiatives in Tennessee. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: John Hopkins spoke about the importance of collaboration in teams, and about some of the important decisions he made, promoting lifelong learning. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes _✓__ No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Ordered pizza for members (roughly $80) V. Special Problems: N/A VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The meeting ran for about an hour and 20 minutes, so while the speaker was excellent, we decided to limit speakers to 20 minutes for the future. VII. Organizing: 3 Participating: 2 DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: Alka-Seltzer Rockets Module Module performed with Dogwood Elementary over forces acting on rockets, including thrust, drag, and weight. 15 students present. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Engage community schools with specific STEM learning goals III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes [X] No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Material cost was $12.71 for film canisters to be used as rocket bodies. Personnel requirements consisted of volunteers. V. Special Problems: Sometimes launching the rockets proved difficult. We determined using a limited amount of water and a large amount of Alka-Seltzer tablets improved the launch. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Students were able to design, build and test their rocket designs in teams. We reviewed and followed the engineering process. VII. Index of Exhibits: N/A

Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes ✓ No Engineers Day was organized and hosted by Tau Beta Pi, although the Tickle College of Engineering at UT was also instrumental, and about 30 UT engineering student groups were invited to participate. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Engineers’ Day was entirely funded by the Tickle College of Engineering. The event required two officer positions devoted to planning and running the event, as well as about 30 others volunteers from Tau Beta Pi. V. Special Problems: Misprint of one event location in the event booklet; dating the free bracelets handed out prevented reuse in future years. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The event was attended by nearly 1500 high school students, 30 UT engineering student groups, and 18 local engineering professionals. Students were given bracelets with “Tau Beta Pi” and “Engineers Day 2016” printed on them to commemorate the day. Judges were giving gifts as a thanks for their contributions and UT student groups were giving

honors for winning their class in the competitions. Students left with a positive impression of engineering and the University of Tennessee, and all feedback from the judges was overwhelmingly positive. General Description: Aluminum Foil Boat Building Module First module performed with Dogwood Elementary over principles of buoyancy. 9 students present. II. Cost & Personnel Requirements: All materials were supplied from the MindSET inventory. Personnel requirements consisted of volunteers. V. Special Problems: Too much aluminum foil was provided which led to the boats being really large. In turn, this led to a huge amount of coins being needed to sink the boats. Consequently, the students piled on the coins and had great excitement from the amount of coins their boats could hold but no officiol scoring was kept. When the module is completed at Lonsdale the amount of aluminum foil provided will be reduced. VI. General Description: Aluminum Foil Boat Building Module Aluminum foil boat module performed with LonsdaleElementary covered principles of buoyancy. 8 students were present. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Engage community schools with specific STEM learning goals III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes [X] No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: All materials were supplied from the MindSET inventory. Personnel requirements consisted of volunteers. V. Special Problems: The aluminum foil sheet provided (12” x 9”) was half the size of what was given at Dogwood Elementary, which reduced the size of the boats and the amount of coins needed to sink the boats! The students piled on the coins and were really excited about the amount of coins their boats could hold but no official scoring was kept. We just kept track of whose boat could hold the most coins relative to everyone else’s boat. This could be an area of improvement. Also, we alotted too much time to the actual construction of the boats and had to rush a little through the testing. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Productive module for the students where they were able to design, build and test their boats. We reviewed and followed the engineering process. VII. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Attendance was low for both TN-Alpha and GSMAC, so advertising for the event could have been better. However, the food and the venue were both excellent. General Description: Because Pi day is usually during spring break, Tennessee Alpha decided to have “Egyptian Pi Day” because the egyptians rounded off the number pi, thus we had it on 3/20 instead of 3/14. Professor Mahadevan, a Psychology professor at the University of Tennessee, told the story of how he got into the Guinness Book of World Records for reciting 31,811 digits of Pi from memory. He performed memory tricks like memorizing twenty random digits after hearing them only once, and explained science behind human memory. Members brought in pies and there was a pie competition. Pi-day t-shirts were also handed out. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Promoting Lifelong Learning, visibility on campus III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes __X_ No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Provided pizza for members, t-shirts for members who requested them, and a t-shirt for Professor Mahadevan V. Special Problems: N/A VI. General Description: Egg Drop Module Module performed with Dogwood Elementary over principles of statics and impact. Consideration of cost and material optimization was also introduced. 15 students present. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Engage community schools with specific STEM learning goals III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes [X] No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Material cost was $0. Materials were already in MindSET inventory. Personnel requirements consisted of volunteers. V. Special Problems: We had no problems, but the module did appear too easy for the students since none of their eggs broke. In the future the total budget should be reduced from $60. VI. General Description: Estimation Module Module performed with Dogwood Elementary over volume. Consideration of the volume of a marble and the volume of a jar and how you can estimate the number of marbles in the jar from these numbers. 14 students present. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Engage community schools with specific STEM learning goals III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes [X] No IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Material cost was $0. Materials were already in MindSET inventory. Personnel requirements consisted of volunteers. V. Special Problems: We had no problems, but the module did appear to be pretty challenging for the students. Some of them really enjoyed the challenge while with others it was difficult to keep their attention. In the future try to make the module a little easier for them to understand or reserve for 5th graders only. VI.
