In the present era of growing need of energy security, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a Mini Ratna Company has played an important role by contributing to the tune of 108 MTes of coal production during the year 2012-13 and committed to achieve the target during 2013-14 to the tune of 120 MTes of coal production. The gigantic task of producing coal has always been very challenging especially in the increasing complex and turbulent environment.

MCL being the second largest coal producing company of CIL in the country, has to drive incremental energy needs for years to come. Any amount of other alternative fuel may not replace coal and its reliability.

Therefore the immediate task and responsibility is to increase coal production and coal off take and ensure growth rate at 8-9%.

The inclusive growth and development is possible only when

priority is given on people’s development through continuous learning and skill up-gradation in the changed environment. Our dedication to the task, the skills we possess and the knowledge acquired over years of experience of working in teams, enabled us to achieve our set target.

I am happy that MTI is committed in developing employees’ knowledge, up-grading skills and changing attitude to accept the new challenges in their existing and future roles. In this backdrop, MTI will be required to be think-tank where ideas and insights in the class room, workshop and seminars would lead to concrete, meaningful action having the desired organisational impacts.

It gives me immense pleasure to compliment MTI team for coming out with Annual Calendar for the year 2013-14 prepared in line with target fixed under Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

MTI is a corporate in house training and development centre for employees of MCL, engaged in continuous learning activity, where pedagogy has always gone under change with time and space suiting and motivating employees to participate more and more in the ongoing learning process.

I am pleased to learn that Management Training Institute (MTI) a Corporate Training centre has come out with a Annual Training Calendar based on MOU target and also the growing need of our employees across the disciplines.

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited is one of the highest productive and profit making Subsidiary Coal Companies of Coal India Limited, has entered the 100 Million Club of coal producing companies for the last four years with a strong, dedicated team of manpower. I feel enlightened submitting here Vivekananda’s saying that “I want the young brigades to flow like waves in the ocean.” It is therefore indicative of the fact that the controlling officer should take care of the young employees by sharing their knowledge and rich experiences.

Dear Colleagues,It gives me a great pleasure in presenting the Annual Calendar of the Management Training Institute of MCL for the year 2013-14.Each year MTI reviews the programmes offered in the previous years and identifies programmes suited for the executives and supervisors. The programmes offered range from fundamentals, helping employees shifting from one functional area to programmes focusing on specific topics to help them to take up specific higher responsibilities. In addition, there are programmes which help executives develop their personality and leadership skills.The programmes are conducted by faculty drawn from coal companies, academic institutions and free lancer.The programmes provide various benefits:1.Revisiting the concepts: Continuing Education is an important component in the career path of executives and supervisors as it helps to understand the successes and failures by applying management concepts. This way they can replicate their successes and avoid failures.2. Questioning the basics: In the dynamic market situations, participants are forced to take quick decisions. In the process of making decisions, sometimes the basics are forgotten. These programmes help to question the basics and reinforce their strategies in the right direction.3.Learn from others: These programmes provide an opportunity to share the

experiences with others.4.Learning atmosphere: The programmes provide an environment for learning.5. A Refreshing experience: A fast pace in today’s world increases stress. A time out for these programmes not only provides a platform for learning but also provides the needed gap to reduce their stress. Also returning back to campus life will provide a refreshing experience.6. Personality development: As mentioned some programmes are designed to help participants develop their personality and leadership skills. In addition, we do conduct non-scheduled programmes for specific needs of organisation. Management Training Institute (MTI), an apex training & development centre of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (A Mini Ratna Company), established in the year 1998, is located at Anand Vihar, Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha. It is situated in a green island amidst picturesque scenery. MTI is known as a Centre of training activities having state-of-art facilities with a small team of dedicated professionals. Expertise of professionals from company, industry and academic institutions are solicited to augment the effectiveness of training programmes. MTI follows holistic approach to education & training with due importance to complete development. All training programmes, irrespective of the theme, have reflective experience sharing sessions and input on ethical issues relating to managerial/technical decision making. MTI, regularly conducts Management and Technical Programmes, Workshops, Seminars and Conferences based on informal need assessment for executives and supervisors every year and indeed developed as a effective learning centre. Each year MTI reviews

the programmes based on feedback from stakeholders offered and accordingly identifies programmes suited for the executives as well as

supervisors. The programmes offered range from General Management Programme, Computer Awareness Programme, Short Programme, Supervisory Development Programme, Functional Programme, Cross Functional Programme etc. In addition, we do conduct non-scheduled tailormade programmes also. The programmes are conducted by faculty drawn from coal companies, academic institutions and free lancer.Most of the Programmes conducted are residential with equipped moderate accommodation facilities at Kalinga Bhawan for the trainees from the

coalfields. In addition, there are two premier technical training institutes located in both the coalfields of the company known as Belpahar Training Institute (BTI), Lakhanpur Area of Ib Coalfield and Mining cum Excavation Engineering Training Institute (MEETI), Central Workshop (Excav.) of Talcher Coalfield. Both the institutes impart training programme under the aegis of MTI & HRD, MCL.

The institute is situated at Anand Vihar, Burla, Sambalpur in the state of Odisha, India and is 12 kms from the heart of Sambalpur. It is built amidst the Power Channel and river Mahanadi surrounded by land scaped garden, pathways and green belts.

The town is piquant and truly a university town as it hosts the Sambalpur University, the VSS Medical College and the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, besides numerous schools and colleges, thus the student population at the height of academic year is sizable. All three centres for higher learning have their own auditoriums which are well equipped.

Burla has an average elevation of 173 metres (567 feet). The Jawahar Minar is hardly 3 Kms away from this institute which offers picturesque views of the dam, the lake and the surrounding forests of Barapahad (12 hills).

Burla, the city of education (Sambalpur University, VSS University of Technology and

VSS Medical College and other academic institutions) is situated on the bank of river Mahanadi and just below the Hirakud Dam at an altitude of 173 metres with temperate climate. Temperature during summer varies from 25 deg. to 45 deg. Celsius, whereas in winter it is 5 deg. to 25 deg. Celsius. Monsoon experiences medium to heavy showers. Winter clothing is recommended from November to February.

LINKAGE

Burla is well connected by road and rail. Its distance from different places is given below:

Burla is situated in a half an hour distance from Sambalpur and 2 hours distance form Bargarh, which are connected by NH-6. The town is horse-shoe shaped with an artificial lake in the middle and NH-6 traversing through one end. The town centre is small and is divided into ‘Kaccha Market’ and ‘Pukka Market’ and hosts numerous small stores and stalls, which are mostly family based small business enterprises. The distance of the following places from Burla is as below:

Sambalpur : 12 Kms

Bargarh : 41 Kms

Jharsuguda : 62 Kms

Rourkela : 187 Kms

Bhubaneswar : 311 Kms

Burla has direct train service to all important cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Bilaspur, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Chennai etc.

LOCAL TRANSPORT

MTI is situated in the outskirts of Burla, about 2.5 Kms from the heart of the town. It is about 2Kms from the Hirakud Railway Station, 12 Kms from Sambalpur Railway Staion (Khetrajpur), 12 Kms from the City Station, Sambalpur. The most common mode of transport is autorikshaws. However, availability of public transport facility to MTI reduces after 8.00PM in the evening.
