Provincial Grand Masters Address MW ProGM and Brethren I extend a very warm and sunny welcome to you all. We are delighted to have the MW ProGM with us today. Sir, once again we thank you for your attendance and leadership, especially in these trying times. I think enough has been said about the impact of the pandemic, particularly on Freemasonry. In spite of the prevailing conditions, the vital elements of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity are alive and well. I hope you feel, as I do, that whenever we are up against it, the people of this country and our fraternity step up. It is however the small things that make a difference; the simple act of a phone call to a brother really does mean so much and can be the difference between isolation and feeling part of one’s Lodge. Of course, we have gone considerably further. You have been hard at work rising money for the COVID relief chest which now stands at £857K, which with match funding from the MCF totals £1.71M. Here in Surrey we have donated over £50K to good causes and I encourage you to examine very carefully the need in your area. So many charities have lost their funding sources and desperately need support. I am particularly keen to hear of support that may be required by charities to resume their normal operations. One of the schemes we have funded was to a band of volunteers making scrubs for Epsom and St Helier Hospitals. I believe the chief coordinator is our very own DepProvGM who has been working with his wife Jackie and a team of volunteers making and delivering scrubs to the NHS. I understand quality control is important, so you will be relieved to hear that Jackie is making them and Richard is chief delivery driver! Last month at our Zoom Annual Convocation, I announced that we would focus on raising £15K for LinkAble over at Woking to buy a new minibus. Not content with being the top performing Lodge in our last Festival, Woking Lodge has continued in its remarkable fund-raising efforts, and thanks to their support the money has already been found. Well done Woking Lodge! I will briefly mention TLC. Don’t forget them, it is an amazing charity and I hope your Lodge is continuing to support them. Please think about sending over an annual contribution.

A few weeks ago, I set W Bro Andrew Rooke DepProvGDC the task of cycling from Lands’ End to John O’Groats (a total of 1000 miles), to raise money to provide two yeti tablets for the residents of James Terry Court and Shannon Court. Andrew, congratulations on having completed this in stages at home, and for raising the amazing sum of £4,200. This, along with some money from the PCC, will provide a superb facility for residents to use the large television size tablets to watch a wide variety of channels, research their family’s history, watch films from their childhood and play bespoke games for senior citizens. Andrew, this is a truly remarkable effort and on the residents’ behalf, my sincere thanks. My congratulations to all of those whom I have appointed or promoted today. Today is your day, please enjoy your preferment you richly deserve it and, yes, from today you are eligible to wear your new regalia. As a Provincial Grand Officer, you are expected to support your Province and your Lodge in delivering its priorities. On that note our priorities remain as Membership – Recruitment, Retention and Recovery, Community Engagement and Membership of The Royal Arch, all underpinned by high quality internal and external communication. In terms of membership we have performed well, but it will come as no surprise that COVID has knocked us back a little, but nothing like some were forecasting. A recent survey, conducted by Grand Lodge, indicated that the vast majority of members are looking forward to returning as soon as it is safe to do so. Grand Lodge is of course planning for the return and has issued initial guidelines for this. More will follow once the Government indicates that social gatherings may resume, and I know the ProGM has asked for options to be presented to him for socially distanced ceremonies. It will come as no surprise to hear that does not include a third degree! I am pleased to see that most Lodges have now appointed a Lodge Mentor who should allocate Personal Mentors to those members who need one. These Personal Mentors are not to be seen as just for the newer members, but also for those who wish to progress further in the Lodge.

Page 5: Annual ‘Virtual’ Meeting 2020 · charities to resume their normal operations. One of the schemes we have funded was to a band of volunteers making scrubs for Epsom and St Helier

With the closing down of the Surrey Pillars website all the Mentoring documentation - and indeed all other Provincial documentation - has been moved to the Provincial website and can be found in the new area called "Members Portal", where it is available to view and download. With the current lockdown situation, it is vital that Lodge and Personal Mentors keep in touch with their Mentees in order that their enthusiasm can be maintained so that they can return to the meetings with renewed anticipation. The pandemic has brought with it some very obvious challenges for us all. One of the consequences has been the need for us to communicate remotely and with greater frequency. This has meant that the Comms team, under the leadership of Bill Caughie, have been working flat out. They have done a great job not only delivering Surrey Risings on a weekly basis but promoting us in the press and social media. I am hopeful that they will soon have a rest, but it just seems to get busier and busier! Bill, please pass on our thanks to your team. Today sees the retirement of two vital cogs in the Provincial machinery. W Bro Steve Jarvis PSGD retires as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master. Steve has served with great distinction and has done a fantastic job looking after his group of Lodges and the welfare portfolio. Steve’s caring nature made him an ideal choice for this portfolio, and he has not let us down making sure whenever a brother is in need they are supported in every way possible. I understand some of the Widows Associations look upon him as something of a toy boy and have made him promise he will continue attending their lunches! The other person who retires today as DepProvGSec is W Bro Ian Turner. He is one of the unsung heroes of our Province. I do not say this lightly, both our current ProvGSec and his predecessor agree with me that Ian has been the backbone of our Province for many years. He is the man who deals with just about every form submitted through the Provincial Office and more importantly tries to make sense of them! He is Mr Reliable and has done a superb job. I know you will join with me in congratulating both Steve and Ian and wish them a long and peaceful retirement.

This is the part where I usually say something like, the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his team of Deputies and Assistants have done a great job in guiding us through this annual meeting, but they haven’t! As ever they have been tremendously busy throughout the year escorting me, and my Deputy and Assistants. Kevin, once again thank you to you and your team. Lastly, the current conditions have put a different pressure upon our ProvGSec and his team. Their response was swift, and all staff and volunteers relocated to working from home and it has been pretty much business as usual. Mike, well done and please pass on my sincere thanks to all of your team. Brethren, we intend to have a series of mini Provincial Meetings later in the year or whenever circumstances permit. Until then I wish you all well and look forward to meeting you all in person. MW ProGM and Brethren, thank you for your kind attention. Stay safe and may God bless you and your families.

W Bro John Lake PAGDC Assistant Provincial Grand Master

Profile

W Bro John Lake was initiated into Morden Park Lodge No. 8038 in 1986. He had no previous Masonic connections through friends and family. His only connection was through his Proposer and Seconder, the former being a friend and the Landlord of the pub close to his workplace at that time, with the latter being another one of the pub locals. The Landlord invited John and some other regular customers to attend his Lodge’s Ladies Festival each year and after attending these on two or three occasions, John asked his friend one evening, “well, what’s all this Freemasonry about then?”, to which he received the reply “I can’t tell you, it’s a secret!”. He was, of course, only joking and after a number of discussions, eventually proposed John for initiation. John found that he took to the Masonic Ritual, in his case Universal, and very quickly progressed through the offices, becoming Master for the first time in 1993. After leaving the Chair he was appointed to the Office of Lodge DC for the first time. In 1999, he received his first Surrey Provincial Craft Appointment to Provincial Grand Steward and then further promotions in 2000 to Provincial Assistant Grand Sword Bearer, and promoted further to Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 2009. In 2014 he was appointed as an Official Visitor and was promoted to Past Provincial Grand Registrar, receiving a further promotion in 2016 to Provincial Junior Grand Warden, which he says was a great honour and fantastic year, supporting the PGM at many of his visits, together with his good friend the Provincial Senior Grand Warden of that year, W. Bro. Kevin Todd MBE. In 2019 he received appointment to Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in Grand Lodge.

Page 9: Annual ‘Virtual’ Meeting 2020 · charities to resume their normal operations. One of the schemes we have funded was to a band of volunteers making scrubs for Epsom and St Helier

John has played an active role in a number of Provincial Committees over a number of years, starting with the Provincial Heritage Committee in 2006 and then subsequent roles in teams addressing Retention, Membership Pathway and Membership Recruitment. He would encourage all interested Masons to express their interest in assisting in Provincial Committees, if they are able to offer the time and commitment to doing so. They are challenging, but equally very rewarding when you are able to see the results. They can also be great fun! John is a member of many different Masonic Units in both the Craft and the Holy Royal Arch, because he liked doing Masonry with his mates; when one would say “why don’t you join my Lodge or Chapter?”, he often said “yes”! John had a 42-year career in the Transportation and Logistics Industry, finally taking early retirement in 2014 from a role as Vice President, Global Airfreight Expert at Deutsche Post DHL. His time with DHL took John to different parts of the world, allowing him to get some understanding of different cultures and their outlook. He says this was the real bonus of his career and harmonises with the outlook of Freemasonry, which globally looks to bring people of different backgrounds and beliefs together and see each other as Brothers, and not the stereotypes that can sometimes be promoted in popular culture. Whilst never a talented sportsman, he is nonetheless interested in most sports and although he follows Brentford FC he has not been to a game for many years. He more actively watches rugby and used to be a keen golfer, until back problems forced him to retire gracefully. John married his wife Lyn in 1995 and “inherited” two grown up step-daughters, Kelly and Emma. Having both led and been a member of various teams throughout his working career, John is looking forward to working with his Group Coordinator and team of OV’s and SOV’s in the St. Patricks Group, continuing the work to build strong relationships with each of the Lodges in his group, especially in these challenging times. As Assistant Provincial Grand Master with the Welfare Portfolio, John is delighted that he will have a well-established and experienced team supporting him. Their dedication in supporting Lodge Almoners, our two care homes, James Terry Court and Shannon Court, through the Association of Friends, as well as The Surrey Masonic Widow’s Association, though W Bro John Mudge, is exemplary. John would like to acknowledge the leadership of his predecessor, W Bro Steve Jarvis. There are many challenges that face our members and their families right now and for certain in the future, but John is looking forward to the challenge of meeting and overcoming these challenges. W Bro John will assume his responsibilities on June 24th 2020 and will be obligated, invested and installed at a later date.

Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master and Brethren.

The accounts for the Province of Surrey for the year ended 31st March 2020 have been reviewed and approved by the Provincial Audit Committee. The accounts and the audit report will be presented at the Provincial AGM planned for later in the year. In the meantime, I am pleased to report a healthy operating surplus of £21K this year, generated through cost saving initiatives, to boost our operating reserves and enhance financial resilience in line with Provincial objectives.

I am sure that the brethren will be pleased to hear that I do not propose any increases in membership subscriptions for the next Masonic year.

Thank you, Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master and Brethren.

A Message from the Provincial Grand Almoner Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Distinguished Brethren, Brethren. I offer my congratulations to all those receiving their first appointments or promotions today. As Provincial Grand Almoner I must first say a few words about what has been happening in the Province from a welfare perspective. As you will be aware each of the Masonic Groups has an Almoner who has responsibility for keeping in touch with the Lodge Almoners within their respective Group. Each has a specific number of contacts and can therefore offer a personalised level of support, help and guidance to Lodge Almoners. It works well. The role of the Lodge Almoner has gradually evolved within the arrangements now in place, under the auspices of the Masonic Charitable Foundation, who provide comprehensive and confidential, wide ranging, support to the brethren. In Surrey there exists a Provincial Petitions Committee (P.P.C.), which can make suitable, small, interim grants in cases of urgent necessity. Almoners still play a vital role in the pastoral care of the brethren and widows of their respective Lodges and act as an important conduit to me, the P.P.C., the Group Almoners and to the MCF when help is needed. In the present circumstances of COVID-19, the role of the Welfare Team is of even greater importance in the care for our brethren and their families. Whilst at present, brethren, we are unable to make personal visits, there is much each of us can do to make a difference, maintain contact and ease the burden for those who may have to continue to maintain a position of limited or total self-isolation. A telephone call is just one simple way that can potentially change a lonely day to one cheered by a friendly word. Locally, we may be aware organisations that offer home deliveries of groceries or other goods or services, this information can be passed on. We must all work with renewed vigour and help each other to help those that need support. Recently, Grand Lodge sent a helpful update 'First Risings' on what work it is undertaking to ensure that when we are able to reconvene our Lodge meetings we are able to do so in a way that is safe for us and meets the advice given by the Government. That has certainly raised our hopes that there is light at the end of what has been a long and for some a lonely tunnel. Brethren, I am confident we shall shortly be able to meet again in the fraternal friendship that is Freemasonry. Meanwhile, stay well and stay safe as I end with a general plea to all Brethren. Please continue to keep a look out for the brethren of your lodge and please contact me, your Almoner or your Group Almoner, details in the Masonic Year Book, if you if have any concerns about any of your members, their families or your widows.

Provincial Charity Stewards Report Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master. Brethren.

I am delighted to present to you my first Charity Stewards Report, in which I am pleased to update you on some of the charity committees events and activities over the past year and to outline some of the projects & initiatives we will be rolling out over the next 12 months.

Following the success or the 2019 Festival, and despite the difficult times we have all endured during the COVID-19 lockdown, you will be glad to hear that the Provincial charity team have remained extremely busy.

The ‘Charity Visit’ Programme which is headed up by W. Bro Andrew Lynch continues to provide us with a first-hand understanding of how, and where, our donations are benefiting these charities, it also helps cement a closer working relationship between Surrey Freemasons and our chosen charities. Any brethren interested in joining the Provincial team in attending one or more of these private behind the scene tours when they re-commence as and when restrictions are lifted, please contact W. Bro Andy or find out more information in the Surrey Risings.

This year’s Charity Stewards Workshops were held at Nutfield, Guildford, Surbiton & Croydon, and were well attended by over 200 Charity Stewards. We were grateful to all those who attended, and we were pleased to provide copies of the new Charity Stewards Handbook. The new handbook has been updated to provide the latest information and advice for Charity Stewards and members.

The annual Charity Stewards Gala Dinner was once again held at the beautiful and historic Oatlands Park Hotel in Weybridge in November 2019. The event was the biggest yet with over 230 attending. The event was hosted by our RW ProvGM with guests enjoying a Champaign reception, a three course meal, followed by live entertainment.

We were also treated to short presentation from representatives of the charities that we have been supporting. They were able to provide us with an insight and an understanding of the work that they do and how our support makes such a difference to so many lives.

So it has been a busy year and we have lots more planned for the next 12 months.

The first of these is….’Bee Masonry.’ This exciting project is headed up by W. Bro Steve Butwell and provides chosen charities with a complete Beekeeping kit, including hives, queen bees and colonies together with clothing and full training.

The project provides a real hands on experience for all involved, contributing to natural plant cross pollination, helping to boost the declining number of bees in the UK and of course, provide the charities with a supply of natural honey for both consumption and charitable fund raising!

Beekeeping promotes well-being through mindfulness and provides an opportunity for the education of children about our natural environment.

For obvious reasons, some of our initiatives have sadly had to be put on hold for the time being. One such project was the ‘Big Handshake’ which many of you would have heard about.

Headed up by W.Bro Steve Guzy and his team in conjunction with the Scouting movement, we plan to gather over 2000 freemasons, scouts, their families and friends at a given venue in Guildford to set a

Page 13: Annual ‘Virtual’ Meeting 2020 · charities to resume their normal operations. One of the schemes we have funded was to a band of volunteers making scrubs for Epsom and St Helier

new world record for any number of people to hold hands at any one time. This would not only be fun but would help promote Freemasons in the community and cement our support for the Scouting movement.

The BIG Handshake has not been cancelled; it is simply postponed until such times as we can all meet up in groups of such numbers. We still intend to become ‘record-breakers!’

I do intend to hold some Charity Stewards workshops this year in some form. This will either be traditional gatherings at masonic centres or via video conferencing. These workshops will be an opportunity to provide updates and information and in particular will focus a new way to encourage and promote regular, ongoing giving and how to get the most out of the Relief Chest Scheme.

Finally brethren, I would ask you to look out for another exciting project that will be launched at the start of our new season and that will enable Surrey Freemasons to make a huge impact on our environment , provide a lasting legacy in the Province and encourage us all to get involved with creating a wonderful nature reserve in the heart of Surrey.

Brethren, I would like to thank all the Provincial Charity Team for their hard work and efforts during the year and for their continued commitment for 2020/21.

W.Bro Steve Norris, Provincial Grand Charity Steward - [email protected]

Till We Meet Again Brethren

Brothers share a special bond, Like blood, brotherhood,

It's thicker than water. Friends may come and go,

And relationships may drift apart, But brothers are forever.

Though the sun may rise in the east, And set in the west,

We will still be brothers. Though the seasons may change, Spring, summer, fall and winter;

We will still be brothers. What God has ordained,

No man can change, Brothers are forever.
