CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

1. INTERACTION WITH DR. ANAND KRISHNA ASUNDI, NTU, SINGAPORE

On 23rd December 2015, the student members SPIE Manipal University Chapter and

the Faculty of Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics interacted with Prof.

Anand Krishna Asundi. The session took place at Lecture hall 13, Department of

Atomic and Molecular Physics, Manipal University. The talk involved a lot of enriching

discussions ranging from basics of Optical testing and Metrology to advanced

inventions in the field. This talk was followed by a discussion on the opportunity as

photonics/optics students for a career in research as well as the industry.

2. COLLABORATION WITH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HEALTHCARE AND TECHNICAL

RESEARCH (ICHTR) HELD AT MANIPAL UNIVERSITY

1st International Conference on Healthcare and Technical Research (ICHTR) hosted

by the Manipal University Student Research Forum was held at Manipal University

from 22st to 24th December 2015. SPIE Manipal University Chapter was a crucial

collaborator in the conference. The student members of the chapter volunteered in the

organising committee of the conference in various degrees. Dr. Anand Asundi, who

was visiting the chapter then also gave a talk at the conference engaging a larger

audience. Chapter Advisor Dr. Santhosh Chidangil was a contributed speaker to the

conference.

3. STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AT ICHTR

Many student members from the SPIE Manipal University Chapter presented their

work in the form of oral and poster presentation competition at ICHTR and bagged

the prizes. 9 student members from the chapter took part in the presentations out of

which Mr. Samvit Menon won first prize for oral presentation, Ms. Swathi Rao, bagged

the first prize for poster presentation while Ms.Shilpa T won the second and

Ms.Kanupriya Daga received best poster in UG category.

4. "INSPIRE", A BSC. INTERACTION PROGRAMME

The student members held a one day interaction session called “Inspire”, for students

from colleges around Manipal who are pursuing their undergraduate courses. This

event was held on 15th January 2016. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Alapati

Vittaleswar, Director, ICAS, Manipal and Dr. Santhosh Chidangil, Head of the Dept.,

Dept. Atomic and Molecular Physics. The first half of the day was spent in introducing

the attendees to Photonics and Nanoscience and the career opportunities in the field.

The presentations were given by Shilpa Samdani, R Raghavendra and Nagarakshit.

The second half of the day was spent in Lab visits to the research labs in the Dept. of

Atomic and Molecular Physics.

5. SPIE AT KIRAN

“Kiran” is an interaction programme where students of grades 9th to 12th from

nearby schools visited the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics as an

institutional visit. The program involved getting the students acquaint with

various Optics based experiments and showing them the wonders of the field.

The experiments were explained by SPIE members and SPIE kit was also

demonstrated in the programme

6. SOCIAL MEDIA PROMOTION

A dedicated facebook page for SPIE Manipal University Chapter was started to share

and discuss various topics, funfacts and opportunities for the members.

Facebook page: www.facebook.com/SPIEmanipal

A blog named “Photonicelodean” was also started on the established website

www.huenew.wordpress.com. The blog aims at sharing interesting pieces in the field

on Optics and Photonics and to provide a platform to getting science out of the labs

to the public.

7. TALK BY STUDENT MEMBER MR. SAURABH PATIL

A talk by Mr. Saurabh Suhas Patil, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing

Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal was held on 28th June

2016. The talk was based on Mr. Saurabh’s thesis work on Opto-Mechanical Door

Locking System.

8. MEETING WITH NIT GOA CHAPTER

A meeting was held with the chapter officials from SPIE NIT Goa Chapter on 2nd May

2016. The meeting involved the discussion jointly hosting Asia Students Photonics

Conference 2016. The meeting concluded with solid groundwork of planning and

setting timelines for ASPC 2016.

9. ASIA STUDENTS PHOTONICS CONFERENCE 2016

Starting from December 2015, SPIE Manipal University Chapter has been planning on

hosting an International Students Photonics conference for students in south Asian

countries. The conference application was sent in for availing FOCUS grant in the

month of January 2016. The chapter is jointly organising this conference with SPIE

NIT Goa Chapter. This conference successfully received the FOCUS grant. Further

collaborations from over 10 Student chapters across South Asia is obtained where the

collaborating chapters contribute their Visiting Lecturer Grant or a part of Activity

grant to the conference. Organisation of ASPC 2016 has established a website for

details and abstract submissions and registrations. Being a student conference, the

conference has a lot of attracting workshops and activities planned for students’
