Announcing the New Center for Learning and EngagementRabbi Hillel taught, “A person who is too shy to ask questions will never learn…”-Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers) Three years ago, we formed a task force to explore and examine all components of education at Temple Sinai. We have been asking ourselves lots of questions. How can Temple Sinai’s education programs and philosophy, for families and adults, develop to meet the needs of an ever-evolving congregation? What will Jewish education look like in five, ten, even twenty years? And how can we do it better? And now, we look forward and set our sights on applying that learning to make Temple Sinai a leader in Jewish Education and an invaluable resource and partner to our congregants. I am proud to announce the launch of Temple Sinai’s Center for Learning and Engagement - a new, dynamic and holistic approach to Jewish lifelong learning. Education for every demographic area will be intentional, meaningful and consistent with the Center’s mission and formula for success. As such, the Center for Learning & Engagement will focus its efforts in four key component areas: Young Families (children 0-5), Youth (Grades K-6), Teens (Grades 7-12), and Adults. See page 7 for all the details. Please join me for the Center for Learning & Engagement’s opening day on Sunday, August 27th!

From My Perspective | Rabbi Brad LevenbergMy dear congregational family,It is with profound pride that Rebecca and I announce that our daughter, Ilana, is becoming a Bat Mitzvah.I know what you are thinking: how can Ilana be ready to become a Bat Mitvah? After all, don’t Rebecca and Brad still look like they are in their late-20s? To which I say: Why, yes, we do, but that doesn’t change the fact that Rebecca Levenberg is now old enough to have a Bat Mitzvah-aged daughter. All joking aside, we have been incredibly fortunate that you, our Temple Sinai family, have embraced us as your own. Ilana was just a few days shy of turning 1 when we first arrived in Atlanta and she has grown up with you. It is only fitting that we commemorate this milestone

of her life (and ours!) with you as well.Rebecca and I are not extending this invitation out of obligation; we sincerely hope that you will join us on Saturday morning, September 9, and will consider staying for the kiddush luncheon that will follow. It would mean the world to us if you could be present and share in this very happy occasion with our family. The invitation is included on this page; please do take a few moments to RSVP to let us know that you will be coming: it is our policy to make sure that everyone in attendance has (at least) a bagel. With Love,Brad Levenberg

“Temple Sinai—isn’t that the congregation with those three amazing rabbis?!” “Wait…are you the ones with that wonderful preschool?” Wherever I go, whether it’s a business meeting or dinner with friends, Temple Sinai comes up

often. And inevitably, the reaction is positive. Temple Sinai has earned a reputation as one of the finest synagogues in the country, and I’ve been honored to be part of this growth since the beginning. The good news is that it doesn’t take years to experience the warmth and welcome Temple Sinai has to offer. But it does take a little bit of effort.Like anything of value, getting the most out of your Temple Sinai membership requires that you put something in. Members who serve on committees that address social action or education see benefits to our community and our children. Those who participate in our choir deepen their love of music. Members who visit the sick fulfill an essential mitzvah. But regardless of how they engage with Sinai, everyone who participates meets others who share their interests and passions.Unlike relationships we form at work or on the golf course, the people we meet in a Jewish context represent a unique connection. Despite diverse backgrounds and lifestyles, we share certain values. We are linked by a desire to live a meaningful Jewish life and build a strong Jewish community.I know of no place where that is easier to do than Temple Sinai. Whether you’re interested in attending services, comforting the bereaved, Jewish education or feeding the hungry, there’s a place for you here. With summer winding down and the High Holy Days around the corner, it’s a great time to think about the year ahead. Not just about the resolutions and amends you will make, but about how you will enhance Jewish life for you and your family in the year ahead.Every service, class and program we offer is strengthened by the contributions of those who participate. There’s a world of opportunity waiting for you at Temple Sinai, and I encourage you to get involved. Take advantage of our extraordinary clergy, our programs, our beautiful facility and our welcoming spirit. Our website, templesinaiatlanta.org, is your source for upcoming events and opportunities.I wish you a pleasant and meaningful high holiday season and invite you to be in touch at any time.

A Learning Series for Parents of Young Children “Your child’s questions about God will come - Are you prepared to answer?!” Wednesday mornings, 9:30-10:30 AMAugust 30, September 6, September 13 “Why can’t I see God?” “Where does God live?” “What does God do?” “Is God watching me?” Children’s questions about God and theology should be expected by almost every parent. Whether or not we have ever discussed or mentioned God with our kids, deep-seated spiritual curiosities will emerge naturally. For many parents, children’s questions bring into sharp focus the reality that we are unsure how best to respond, either because we have not given serious thought to our own theology, or because we are unsure of how to communicate serious answers in age-appropriate language.During this 3 session discussion series with Rabbi Segal, we will explore a variety of important theological topics - belief, prayer, death, evil, and more – with the aim of helping parents formulate their own answers to children’s questions about God that are honest, sincere and comforting. Bagels, fruit and coffee available.

Sinai Teens in Costa Rica Traveling and experiencing other cultures is one of the greatest opportunities we can have in life. This summer, 11 Temple Sinai teens spent ten days in Costa Rica on a Mitzvah Corps experience with Molly Okun, learning, working, and immersing themselves into an incredible culture. On our first day we visited the Irazu Volcano with Rodolfo Van der Laat, a volcano expert and geologist. We then saw how traditional Costa Rican masks were made and discussed the role they play in Costa Rican society. We also spent some time learning how to Salsa dance! On our second day we drove east to the Caribbean Coast and then traveled by boat to the coastal village of Nuevo Pacuare where we stayed for a few days. While in Nuevo Pacuare, we worked with Widecast, a nonprofit that helps sea turtle conservation. We learned about Leatherback, Green, and Hawksbill turtles and had the amazing opportunity to release baby Leatherback Turtles into the ocean. We also had the opportunity to work alongside locals in the village to build sidewalks connecting the schoolhouse, kitchen, and bathroom at an elementary school. Our work was hard but rewarding; we were lucky to have the opportunity to engage with local people and learn about their culture and community. On our eighth day we traveled to the beautiful beach town of Puerto Viejo and spent the afternoon enjoying the Punta Uva beach and swam in the Caribbean Sea! On our last full day in Costa Rica we went zip lining through the forest canopy and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Throughout our entire trip we were immersed into the culture, interacting with locals, eating local cuisine, and much more! We all came home with a greater sense of appreciation for what we have and proud sense of accomplishment from our hard work.

Dear Fellow Congregants:

I welcome this opportunity to communicate with you. There has been a long hiatus in our correspondence. After months of treatment and home rest as a direct result of my decision to fight my cancer diagnosis, I thank God, my doctors, and family that I am now privileged to continue with an active life.

During my illness, I was the beneficiary of an exceptional measure of love and concern from you which, on a daily basis, did so much to sustain me. Your letters and notes, your phone calls and visits (always appropriate and never intrusive), your tributes, your offers to drive, your prayers, and honors were all touching as well as efficacious.

It has always been my custom to respond to congregants on an individual basis but, this time, I simply did not have the physical and emotional energy. Although treatment has ended, I still am short of stamina. I do hope that this letter will suffice. I know that you understand but you also must know that it pains me to respond to your heartfelt kindnesses in such a formal manner.

I pray for the good health of all Sinai members and my heart and empathy goes out to those who suffer. "Living each day to the fullest" was a cliche of my grandparents' generation. Now I realize that it is one of profound truths of life.

Thank you again and God bless,

Rabbi Phil Kranz

Film Series: There are Jews Here 8Sunday, August 13, 6:30 pmThroughout the United States, approximately one million Jews live outside major urban centers. Focusing on four such vanishing communities, filmmakers Brad Lichtenstein and Morgan Elise Johnson demonstrate the unique challenges facing these far-flung congregations as they struggle to hold on, just barely, to a Jewish way of life.

Ashley Day joins us as our Interim Librarian and will be with us through High Holy Days this year.Ashley received a Master of Library and Information Science from Valdosta State University in 2014, and also holds a Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of South Carolina. She

previously taught music in both the public and private sectors for twelve years, the last seven of which were served at The Davis Academy. Ashley currently volunteers at The Bremen Museum in the Cuba Family Archives, where she is weeding and reclassifying all library resources. Ashley is so excited to join the Temple Sinai team and looks forward to meeting you over the next several months.

Summer hours for The PNK Learning Center are Monday-Thursday, 10:30-3:30, but members may use Iibrary resources beyond regular hours. Please see Abigail Baughman or Jenny Mopper for assistance if you stop by after hours. Members are also able to search the library catalog at home on: https://templesinailibrary.follettdestiny.com. Ashley is happy to research questions for you, place holds for requested items, and recommend books. Feel free to send her an email at [email protected] or call the office. Please stop in and check out our new additions, spend some time reading, researching, or just quietly relaxing. The PNK Learning Center is here to serve you!

Did You Know? With over 12,000 volumes, The PNK Learning Center is the largest Jewish library in Atlanta. The PNK Learning Center will be adding MANY new library resources for our youngest members, including much needed board and baby books. Our teen section will also be expanded and updated over the next coming months.

Check out these new titles for your poolside or beach reading! The Afterlife of Stars, Joseph KertesWhen Russian tanks roll into the public squares of Budapest to crush the Hungarian Revolution, brothers Robert and Attila Beck flee with their family to the Paris townhouse of their great-aunt Hermina. The year is 1956 and as their country changes forever, these two boys transform as well, confronting danger and wonders previously unknown. As they travel through minefields both real and imagined, Robert and Attila grapple with sibling rivalry, family secrets and incalculable loss. Along the way they encounter mysterious fellow travelers, bewildering sights of a nation in transition and surprising hilarity, all in pursuit of the one place they thought they'd lost forever: home. The Man Who Never Stopped Sleeping, Aharon AppelfeldErwin doesn't remember much about his journey across Europe when the war finally ended. He spent most of it asleep, carried by other survivors as they emerged from their hiding places or were liberated from the camps and traveled to the shores of Naples, where they filled the refugee camps and wondered what was to become of them. Erwin becomes part of a group of young boys being trained in both body and mind for their new lives in Palestine but a part of Erwin desperately clings to the past... and he knows that who he was is just as important as who he is now becoming. Karolina’s Twins, Ronald H. BalsonA saga inspired by true events of a Holocaust survivor's quest to fulfill a promise, return to Poland and find two sisters lost during World War II. Alone in Berlin, AJFF 2017 Season Opener!Disinterested in politics and content to keep to themselves, factory foreman Otto Quangel (Brendan Gleeson) and his dutiful wife Anna (Emma Thompson) are unlikely dissidents. But when their son is killed on the battlefield, grief jolts them into action. They launch a silent protest, dropping handwritten postcards denouncing Hitler across the city. With terror and paranoia infecting the German capital, their high-risk acts of defiance spark a citywide manhunt. Under mounting pressure to find the culprits, morally ambivalent police inspector Escherich (Daniel Bruhl) pursues the case with increasing intensity as the net begins to tighten on the couple. Portraying a singular act of courage through dignified central performances under the stylish direction of Vincent Perez, Alone in Berlin is inspired by a true story and adapted from Hans Fallada’s international bestseller.

A Simple Act of CaringInternet videos can be fun, informative or a complete waste of time. Occasionally, like one that circulated online recently, they’re even inspirational. Set in Japan, the

video depicts a child who eyes a beautiful cake in the grocery store, but is told by her grandmother that they cannot afford it. A gentleman who overhears their exchange purchases the cake and hands it to the girl. The thrilled child brings it home, not for herself, but to celebrate her grandfather’s birthday. We learn that someone had done the same favor for the kind man when he was young and in need. The video closes with this simple message: A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple. Starting that ripple is easier than you might think. Smile at a stranger. Offer someone in need a hand across a busy street. Pay for the toll of the anonymous stranger in the car behind you. At Second Helpings Atlanta, we know the value of simple acts of caring. Seven days a week, our Volunteer drivers crisscross the city to rescue nutritious surplus food from stores, restaurants and businesses. They deliver this bounty to 35 Partner Agencies that serve the hungry. SHA distributes about 125,000 pounds of food a month, enough to provide 104,000 meals! A simple act of caring is changing lives for thousands in Atlanta. To learn more about participating in the mitvah of providing food for the hungry as a Volunteer driver or Donor, visit secondhelpingsatlanta.org.

e.New Shammashim Corps!

Volunteers Needed

We are establishing a dedicated corps of Friday evening Ushers, now called, Shammashim. Historically, congregants who were coming to services to observe a yahrzeit were asked to serve as ushers for that Shabbat evening. We have come to appreciate, however, that those who are coming to recite Kaddish should be given the spiritual and emotional space needed to remember and honor their loved ones without simultaneously having to serve and greet their community. Our goal is to recruit and train congregants who will proudly serve our congregational family on Shabbat evenings by greeting congregants and guests, sharing important information about various programs and services in the building, and helping to create an environment that is friendly, warm, inviting and reflective of the community we aspire to be. This is a special mitzvah that will not only contribute to the spirit and beauty of Shabbat, but also help to further strengthen Temple Sinai. If you are interested in participating in this innovative and meaningful program, please fill out the form at https://templesinai.wufoo.com/forms/temple-sinai-shammashim-greeter-corps/. All Shammashim will attend a one hour training and ideally be asked to greet at one Shabbat Service each quarter (four Shabbat evenings during the year). It is our hope that Shammashim will commit to one year of service. We would appreciate your enthusiastic support and encouragement of others. Contact Jaimee Boettcher with any questions: [email protected] or 404.252.3073 ext. 353.

Temple Sinai is proud to announce their partnership with One Good Deed, an 11 year old program which is part of JF&CS, matching Temple Sinai volunteers and seniors. The program will be managed by our Kesher committee. With social isolation impacting many older adults, meaningful interactions and warm conversations with others grow increasingly rare. The goal of the Temple Sinai and JF&CS partnership program aims to address this issue by matching older adults with volunteers to create newfound friendships and invaluable connections across generations. The volunteers will assist our seniors in such things as Friday night services, reading, grocery shopping, getting out of the house or simply good company while at home. Each match meets approximately once every other week for two hours. The program is not designed to provide transportation to medical appointments or cleaning help. Also, we cannot match those in assisted living or nursing home environments. The One Good Deed Program has already made 64 matches this past year in the Atlanta community. Our own Temple Sinai member Lynn Podber has been a volunteer for 16 months. Lynn says," Our relationship is truly unique...it has become a special friendship. I honestly don't feel like I'm volunteering when I'm with her!" If you would like to learn more about Temple Sinai and JF&CS' One Good Deed partnership, or if you're interested in volunteering as a friendly visitor, please contact our liaison Susan Newman at 404.542.5520 or email her at [email protected] may also email One Good Deed at [email protected].

Temple Sinai is going green! In order to reduce waste and costs, we are offering an option to receive the D’var Sinai each month via email. We will have plenty of printed copies at Temple Sinai if you would like to take home a publication. Please note that this is only an option; if you do not sign up to receive our online version, you will still receive the printed copy in the mail. Let us know if you would like to receive this copy electronically. Visit http://tinyurl.com/dvarsinai
