It is a small town in the North- eastern section of the state not too far from Texas but outside the “BIble Belt.” Our congregation was small, numbering around 60 and up around 80 or a 100 in the Summer time. While outside the Bible Belt, our congre- gation was typical of all Churches of Christ. Our beliefs and practices were exactly like the larger congregations in Texas, Tennessee and Ar- kansas. I found this out while in Lubbock Christian College when I was part of a traveling choir. The churches I attended while in Lubbock were also exactly like my home congregation in beliefs and practices. Beyond the belief system and practices of the churches I knew in all the places I visited, I also found out that the believers in those gathering places were also the same, they were family. I owe my faith to two families; the first was my biological one and the second was the “brothers and sisters” (as we used to call the mem- bers) who were members of the church. They were my biological family’s support as we traveled through the eventualities of life. In times of both fair and stormy weather the church drew near with companionship, food, encouragement, help and support. In my estimation it was this which drew me to them and then to the Lord. Over the years this has been Dana’s and my mainstay. It is the relationships, the sharing of faith and the en- couragement through support and prayer that has sustained us. It is the church family, the “household of faith” which is the true character of our part of God’s family. When folks do not attend assembly, over time, this is what they miss. This last week we said “I’ll see you later” to Dana’s mother. During that period and afterward the church family showed up............again..........as they have all our lives. Members from all over shared their love and support. Just today we received word that the Deer Park Church and individuals from the church made donations to the Deer Park building fund in honor of Dana’s mother. Right after she was put on hospice care individuals showed up at our home as well as an elder and his wife from Deer Park. We are so grateful for our relationships as part of God’s Family. I believe THAT is what the Father had in mind when he created CHURCH. He knew all of us would need help from the Divine and from each other. THAT is what church is, FAMILY. I thank him and you for receiving Dana and me into your group. What a heritage. Foree

“The Day” The writer of Hebrews (chapter 2) says that “...today is the day of salva-tion, harden not your hearts.” The “day” had long been a special term for the Israel-ite nation. From the time of Moses and the prophets the Jews had looked into the future when everything would be made right. The Hebrews writer reminds them that “today” had always been the day to be right with God. The Divine reminder was the years of wandering in the wilderness after the spies had brought back faithlessness when they had looked into the land of promise and were afraid. That day of fear should have been a day of faith, of listening to God, rather than their own judgment

Today is the day, it always has been.

New Years traditionally has been a time for resolutions. It is not a bad custom. However, every day should be the day for us. Hearing the Father may lose its impact as we wander through everyday life. It is easy to be consumed with things as we seem. Conclusions may be drawn from how we perceive events to be going. As time passes judgment is clouded by daily tasks and circumstances. In the process we lose focus. So, from time to time something gets our attention and resolution to embrace a new perspective emerges, hence “New Year Resolutions.”

Not a bad thing.

Perhaps the best resolution is embracing today, each day, as the day to hear the Father. Today becomes “the day” everyday. Today is the day of salvation. Today is the day to have a soft and tender heart toward God. Not a bad thing.

It is that time of the year again, millions of people wake up thinking about the year that passed and the year that is yet to come. This year, consider making a resolution to live a better life! Here are five that could help you.

Read the Bible

Reading the Bible (I know this is the church answer, but do we need to do it!) is not only a great way to get in touch with God, but to relax and take time for yourself as well. There is definitely an amazing verse just waiting to become your call for living a better life in 2019.

Remove Negative Elements

January is the perfect time of year to give up all the things holding you back from your best self yet! From negative friends to bad habits, it’s time to clear out all of the things you spent 2018 complaining about.

Positive Energy

While you’re removing all the negatives from your life, fill the void left behind with positive people and hob-bies. Try something that you always wished to do.

Gadget Free

Yes, we know your smart phone is fun and it’s a great way to stay in touch with your friends and family, but it’s also an addiction. Challenge yourself which involves turning off all electronics so we can make a deeper connec-tion with those around you!

Take It Easy

We know you work hard and play hard, but you probably also stress too hard and even think too hard! This year, give yourself a break from unnecessary stresses by slowing down.

Hope everyone has a great 2019. Todd
