In trying to write a history of the Institute it is impossible to include absolutely everything that has been achieved in the 65 years that it has been in existence. Therefore, this commemorative book simply attempts to highlight many of the Institute’s achievements, and give a flavour of its vital role in the community over the years. Since1944theInstitutehasevolvedintooneofthelargestcollegesinthecountry,standingattheheartofthelocalcommunity,andhavinginthose65yearstouchedthelivesofmostlocalpeople,eitherthrougheducation,training,employmentorapublicevent.

Although the Institute as we know it today was not built until 1953, the Education Act of 1944 gave the go-ahead for the separate training schools in Grimsby - the Nautical School and the School of Arts and Crafts, to join together under the banner of The Grimsby College on the land at Nuns Corner, and is now Grimsby Institute’s main campus.

Development of courses and further expansion of the College building moved at a frantic pace throughout the 1960’s. The first meeting of the newly elected Governing Body was held, and set up four Advisory Committees (Commerce, Engineering and Building, Nautical, and Applied Science), which would report to the Principal, make recommendations regarding the range of courses, purchase of equipment, and act as general liaison between the College departments, industry and commerce, and the various examining bodies used. Membership of the committees was drawn from the professional institutions and local organisations which had an interest in the work of the relevant departments.

Significant developments took place in 1990 that would affect the College in the long-term. The Local Management of Colleges scheme, was launched and resulted in a newly constituted Governing Body, consisting of 20 members with an ‘employment interests’ majority. This body, which was renamed the Board of the Corporation in 1994, quickly concentrated its energies on the strategic management of the College, determining staffing levels and responsibilities, amongst other things.

Grimsby College has responded by constantly moving forward, developing innovative and relevant programmes which meet the needs of learners, employers and the wider community. It was proud to be one of the first colleges in the country to offer a varied programme of sporting academies starting from a Further Education level, creating the Football Development Centre.

Opportunities in vocational training developed with a programme of vocational GCSE’s delivered to 14-16 year olds. These flexible GCSE’s, in subjects such as engineering and media, are still not currently taught in schools. This has meant that school pupils come into the College for most of their lessons, particularly any practical sessions, with some delivery also taking place in school.

The College was able to demonstrate its commitment to the community following the Government’s 2003 announcement regarding tuition fees, which meant that universities could vary their fee amounts between £1000 and£3000 from September 2006. The Grimsby College’s reaction was to pledge not to charge top up fees, capping this until 2011. Principal Khan was to become a figure of even more community prominence after successfully standing in the May 1st elections, and becoming a Liberal Democrat Councillor.

In 2005 Rodger McCracken decided to step down from his position of Chairman of Governors of the Institute, with the role now being assumed by Mr Philip Jenkinson. Having held the position of Chairman since 1998 Rodger was one of the officials responsible for the recruitment of now Principal Daniel Khan. Rodger commented that it was Daniel’s making reference to the students in his presentation that was key in the decision to appoint him for the role; other applicants had failed to actually mention the students.
