AN ORPHAN, A BILLIONAIRE, A DOGOn August 5, 1924, a new comic strip about an orphan girl debuted in

The New York Daily News. Little Orphan Annie, created by Harold Gray, was a quick success, charmingAmericans with its adventurous

tales of a plucky 11-year-old girl. By 1937, it had become the most popular comic strip in America, according to a Fortune magazine poll.

Gray wrote the strip for 44 years until his death in 1968, and Little Orphan Annie continued under a long succession of authors until it

was cancelled on June 13, 2010.

The strip began with Annie in an orphanage overseen by an abusive matron. She was rescued by a mean-spirited Mrs. Warbucks, who

took her home on a trial basis. The very wealthy and powerful Oliver Warbucks quickly fell for Annie’s charms and instructed her to call

him “daddy.” Warbucks adopted Annie.

Sandy entered the strip in early 1925 as a small puppy that Annie rescued from a group of abusive boys, completing the trio of main

characters that would sustain the comic strip for 86 years. Sandy was allowed to grow into a big dog, but Annie remained forever 11 years

old.

Annie the musical has been produced around the world and is in continuous production, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Golly

Gee, we still love the warm, optimistic story of the orphan, the billionaire and the dog.
