MUSIC PROFICIENCY LEVELS QUALIFICATIONS
1. Music proficiency levels are used to differentiate the progressive levels of knowledge andskill related to individual music abilities, to include:
a. Military Band- Music Proficiency Level Basic qualification,
b. Military Band- Music Proficiency Level One qualification,
c. Military Band- Music Proficiency Level Two qualification,
d. Military Band- Music Proficiency Level Three qualification,
e. Military Band- Music Proficiency Level Four qualification, and
f. Military Band- Music Proficiency Level Five qualification.
2. Music proficiency levels qualifications can be attained for each of the following primaryinstruments:
a. Flute,
b. Oboe,
c. Bassoon,
d. Clarinet,
e. Saxophone,
f. Trumpet,
g. French horn,
h. Trombone! Euphonium,
i. Tuba,
j. Mallet percussion, and
k. Snare drum.

MUSIC PROFICIENCY LEVEL BASIC
TOPIC OBJECTIVEa. Instrument maintenance Depending on the what instrument the cadet plays
(woodwind, brass, or percussion), the cadet will:
a. Maintain their primary instrument.
See Annex A for further maintenance details on eachinstrument group.
b. Music theory The cadet will apply music theory to include:
a. Identifying elements of pitch (bass and treble clef),notes on the staff in bass and treble clef, and ledgerlines.
b. Recognizing rhythms to include:- Note and rest values up to sixteenth notes,- Time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, common), and- Strong and weak beats.
c. Defining symbols and terms.
See Annex B for the list of symbols and terms for each level.c. Rhythm and aural skills The cadet will:
a. Perform the rhythms found on the Level Basic rhythmsheet.
See Annex C for all rhythm sheets.d. Scales and rudiments The cadet will:

c. Sing or playback a five-note melody. The melody usesonly the first five notes of a major scale. It will beginon the tonic note and contains only step-wise motion.Solfege is not required.

ANNEX E- LEVEL MUSIC
PURPOSE
1. Each instrument is assigned pieces in two categories. List A of the prepared music will
focus on musical expression and List B of the prepared music will focus on instrumental
and musical technique.
2. List A for snare drum players consists of “street beats”. The “street beats” are located in
Annex F.
3. Snare drum players and mallet percussion players have a List C. List C prepared music
piece focuses on mallet percussion musical technique for snare drum players and snare
drum musical technique for mallet percussion players.
4. Pieces may be substituted with the approval of the Regional Cadet Music Advisor
(RCMA).
USE
5. All players are to choose one piece from List A, one piece from List B. and List C (when
applicable). Snare drum players are required to prepare all pieces Listed in List A.
6. The cadet will be given the piece(s) of music to prepare for the assessment.
7. It is expected that the cadet will play the proficiency level music while respecting all
temp markings, articulations, and stylistic indications.
8. For the purpose of this manual one piece of music from List A, List B, and all “street
beats” will be provided.
9. French horn level four and Bassoon levels 3-5 will be provided at a later date.

ANNEX F- STREET BEATS
STREET BEAT INSTRUCTIONS
PURPOSE
1. “Street beats” are required as part of the Proficiency Level Music List A for snare drumplayers.
2. Pieces may be substituted upon approval of the RCMA.
USE
3. Snare drum players are required to prepare all the pieces in List A.
4. The cadet will be given the piece(s) of music to prepare for the assessment.
5. It is expected that the cadet will play the “street beats” while respecting all tempomarkings, articulations, and stylistic indications.
6. The following are the “street beats” that are to be used for the corresponding musicproficiency level:
a. Level 1- Steamboats 1-3.b. Level 2- Steamboats 1-6 and Paradox 1-3.c. Level 3- Steamboats (all) and Paradox (all).d. Level 4- Supersix (all) and Two-Four (all).e. Level 5- Psycho Seven (all) and Viscount Six (all).
