SEP–OCT 2011

As a college student at Penn in the ‘70s, my cultural horizons expanded dramatically as a result of the Annenberg Center. How extraordinary it was to see Liv Ullmann in A Doll’s House, which was her United States theatrical debut, and Dame Cleo Laine and John Dankworth on one of their early American tours, right on the Penn campus. These events brought the community and the Penn campus together, just as the Annenberg Center continues to do today.Andy Brownstein, audience member since 1971

The Life and Times of Deborah Franklin FrI > SEP 16 > 7:30 Pm* SAT > SEP 17 > 8 Pm

Did you know that the Constitutional Catalyst and Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, had a lovingly devoted spouse by the name of Deborah Read Franklin? Charming, warm, wise, fearless and abundantly opinionated, the unsung First Lady of Philadelphia takes her long-overdue leap into the historic limelight in this entertaining world premiere. Written and directed by Philadelphia’s own Dr. Roberta Sloan of Temple University, this witty and vivid portrayal of colonial America is all about the “forgotten founding mother,” and how Ben Franklin could not have become who he was without her.

These performances are part of the By Local Series and are supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Wallace Foundation.

Joshua redman/Brad mehldau Duo FrI > OCT 14 > 7:30 Pm*

Hailed by the Boston Herald as “a jazz wunderkind,” saxophonist Joshua Redman is one of today’s most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists. Brad Mehldau, having garnered numerous awards and admiration from jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike, has forged a unique path, embodying the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure, and is “universally admired as one of the most adventurous pianists to arrive on the jazz scene in years” (Los Angeles Times). Don’t miss these two remarkable Grammy®-nominated jazz greats as they join forces for one unforgettable duo performance that promises to shine with creative brilliance.

Hua Hua Zhang’s Visual Expressions FrI > OCT 14 > 8 Pm* SAT > OCT 15 > 8 Pm

Philadelphia puppet artist Hua Hua Zhang and her company Visual Expressions partner with Philadelphia dance company Kun-Yang Lin and composers David Darling and Steven Halpera to treat us to the world premiere of Two Hands—a work that combines dance, music and various types of puppetry and explores how we deal with balance, desire, power, wonder and confusion in our own lives. Born in China where she was one of the leading performers for the award-winning China Puppet Arts Troupe and formally trained at the prestigious Puppet Arts Program at the University of Connecticut, Hua Hua ingeniously uses Asian and Western puppet art to explore universal, cross-cultural themes and promote the peaceful understanding of the differences and similarities among many cultures. These performances are part of the By Local Series and are supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Wallace Foundation.

I’ve had three first-hand experiences directing excellent revivals of plays at the Zellerbach Theatre prior to their Broadway engagements. It’s a magnificent facility and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that I have a special place in my heart for the black box which bears my name.

Omar Sosa Afreecanos Quartet & Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band FrI > OCT 28 > 7:30 Pm*

Afro-Cuban jazz great Omar Sosa and the legendary Jerry Gonzalez team up with their bands for one incredible double bill. Hailed by All About Jazz as a true “fusion artist in the best sense of the word,” who “mixes his Cuban roots with tastes of bebop, free jazz, even hip hop and electronica, into a strikingly fresh and spicy modern stew that’s much more than the sum of its ingredients,” Omar Sosa will bring the audience to its feet with his dynamic playing and improvisational mastery. Then, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band—the band the New York Times calls “the best Latin Jazz group working” and one of the most influential modern Afro-Caribbean jazz groups in the world—take the stage with their unique fusion of complex Latin rhythms and impeccable jazz improvisations.

Shantala Shivalingappa SAT > nOV 5 > 8 Pm*

Treasured in both India and Europe, Shantala Shivalingappa is one of the world’s preeminent interpreters of Kuchipudi, a 2,000-year-old classical Indian dance style rooted in the Natya Shastra, an ancient codification of dance, music and theatre. Called the “child of the east and west” for her birth in India and upbringing in Paris and praised as “divinely gifted” and “intoxicating” by the New York Times, Shivalingappa has worked with some of the greatest artists of our time, including Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook and the legendary Pina Bausch. She has captivated audiences worldwide with the vibrant, precise storytelling embodied in her performances, and “erases cultural boundaries with her lightness, wit, and musicality” (The New Yorker). Accompanied by four master musicians, Shivalingappa appears in a special Philadelphia performance of Shiva Ganga, a work that explores the balance between the Hindu gods Shiva, who creates and sustains the universe through dance, and Ganga, who embodies grace and elegance. This performance is co-presented by Sruti, The India Music and Dance Society of Philadelphia.

Gate Theatre Endgame & Watt TUE > nOV 8 > 7 Pm* Endgame WED > nOV 9 > 7:30 Pm* Watt THU > nOV 10 > 7:30 Pm* Endgame FrI > nOV 11 > 7:30 Pm* Watt

Straight from Dublin’s acclaimed Gate Theatre, enjoy two exciting new adaptations starring the world’s leading Samuel Beckett interpreter, Barry McGovern, directed by one of Ireland’s rising directors, Tom Creed. Called “ominous and funny” by the Irish Independent and “simply outstanding” by the Guardian, Watt is the extraordinary story of an itinerant character who journeys one day to go work in the remote country home of Mr. Knott. The bizarre adventures of Watt and his struggle to make sense of the world around him are told with elegant simplicity, immense pathos and explosive humor. Endgame tells the amusing tale about the aged and blind Hamm and his servant Clov, co-existing in a mutually dependent and fractious relationship, with only Hamm’s legless parents for company. Hailed as one of Beckett’s most important works and written in the style associated with the Theatre of the Absurd, the play focuses on the themes of repetition, time, isolation and existence.

Our entire family has enjoyed the performances at the Annenberg

Center for years. It’s great to have access to such a wide variety of talent

from all over the world right here in our back yard. When our kids were younger we took full advantage of

the Philadelphia International Children’s Festival and now that

they’re teenagers, we’ve seen amazing concerts and plays. It’s indeed a family affair for us and we’re thrilled to be a part of the

Annenberg Center.

Hiromi SAT > nOV 12 > 8 Pm*

Since the release of her debut album Another Mind in 2003, Hiromi Uehara has electrified audiences and critics in both hemispheres with a creative energy that defies the conventional parameters of jazz and pushes musicianship and composition to unprecedented levels of complexity and sophistication. Having performed with jazz greats including Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke, Hiromi has been heralded as one of the brightest new lights on today’s piano jazz landscape. “A forceful presence on any stage” (New York Times), Hiromi will captivate you with her infectious energy as she performs tunes from her latest album, Place To Be—a musical travel journal of the many places around the world that have left an indelible impression on her creative sensibilities.

Chunky move THU > nOV 17 > 7:30 Pm FrI > nOV 18 > 8 Pm* SAT > nOV 19 > 2 Pm & 8 Pm

From down under comes dance thunder! Australia’s Chunky Move is a company that feasts on theatrical invention and high-tech special effects. Their witty and unpredictable works have garnered multiple Helpmann Awards, Australia’s prestigious live performance award. In a Philadelphia premiere, Chunky Move performs its new work, Connected, a collaboration with kinetic sculptor Reuben Margolin and founding Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek. A side-step from the norm for Chunky Move, Connected relies less on digital technology and more on Margolin’s purpose-built, kinetic sculpture. Constructed from wood, recycled plastic, paper and steel, Margolin’s weightless waveform sculpture appears as the agile dancers twist and hurl through space. Beginning with simple movements and hundreds of tiny pieces, the dancers construct the awe-inspiring sculpture in real performance time.

Still Black, Still Proud An African Tribute to James Brown SUn > nOV 20 > 7 Pm*

Discovering the points at which African and American music strike sparks off each other, Pee Wee Ellis (“The Man Who Invented Funk”) and a host of stars including Maceo Parker, Vusi Mahlasela and Vieux Farka Touré bring James Brown’s revolutionary music full circle in this innovative, rhythm-fueled tribute to Afro-funk. This extraordinary line-up of international talent celebrates the lasting legacy of the “Godfather of Soul” and explores the deep relationship between soul, funk and modern African music with timeless hits such as “I Feel Good” and “Gonna Have a Funky Good Time.” Artists from the United States and Africa join together in an ensemble that the Boston Globe dubs “a pancontinental funk-soul supergroup,” and that All About Jazz proclaims is simply “explosive.”

Winner of major awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, Danú is among the hottest bands on the Celtic circuit, with a traditional but modern sound built around virtuoso players of accordion, fiddle, flute and percussion and the rich vocals of Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh. Bring the entire family and enjoy this glorious Irish celebration of Christmas!

Spanish Harlem Orchestra Salsa navidad SAT > DEC 3 > 8 Pm

New York style and sophistication meet Afro-Caribbean rhythm and passion with the Spanish Harlem Orchestra—the musical embodiment of the steamy, culturally rich neighborhood of Spanish Harlem. Compagnie marie Chouinard THU > DEC 8 > 7:30 Pm FrI > DEC 9 > 8 Pm* SAT > DEC 10 > 2 Pm & 8 Pm

Marie Chouinard, a recipient of Quebec’s Prix Denise Pelletier award, has been a fixture on world stages for more than two decades. Her pioneering company explores the poetics of the body in immediate, intelligible and ever-surprising ways and creates compelling imagery on stage that will sustain and demand your attention. Although her works may be perceived as provocative, they are better viewed as pathways towards freedom and compassion, where humor is possible and beauty is omnipresent. Inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography, Compagnie Marie Chouinard will perform Le sacre du pritemps (Rite of Spring), Prélude à l’aprés-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) and 24 Preludes by Chopin, a jubilant yet solemn work that evokes feelings of passion, introspection and rebellion. I love going to the Annenberg Center, for everything from a bawdy and bouncy Tyrone Guthrie Theater production of Shakespeare to an evening of lively Cuban jazz. The quality is always excellent, the seats

are comfortable (there isn’t a bad seat in the house!), parking is easy and the University campus provides a variety of opportunities for pre- and post-show dining. The Annenberg Center is my favorite place in

What can you expect when hip hop meets ballet? A whole new aesthetic with eye-popping appeal. These polar opposites are embodied in the work of RUBBERBANDance Group (RBDG) and Artistic Director Victor Quijada. This hip hop master from Los Angeles melds his formal dance training with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and Twyla Tharp with the excitement of hip hop and creates a fresh, new “exciting, seemingly improbable fusion of hip hop, ballet and modern dance” (Los Angeles Times). Collaborating with lighting designer Yan Lee Chan and composer DJ Jasper Gahunia, RBDG brings the Philadelphia premiere of Gravity of Center (2011) and, through the raw physicality of hip hop, tells the story of a nomadic tribe that fights, craves and hustles just to survive.

Green Chair Dance Group FrI > FEB 3 > 7:30 Pm* SAT > FEB 4 > 7:30 Pm

Since its inception in 2004, Philadelphia’s own Green Chair Dance Group continually seeks to choreograph highly original movement with a focus on interpersonal relationships, intense physicality and humor. Grounded in the banalities and complications of everyday life but charging headfirst into the unexpected, the company’s dances stand perspective on its head and offer a fresh look at how we move through the world. Don’t miss the latest work of this athletic and unique group the Boston Globe calls “inventive, poignant, laugh-out-loud funny and completely engaging.”

These performances are part of the By Local Series and are supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Wallace Foundation.

Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz Band 75th Birthday Celebration SAT > FEB 4 > 8 Pm*

Eddie Palmieri, known for his charismatic power and bold innovative drive, has a musical career that spans over 50 years as a bandleader of Salsa and Latin jazz orchestras. With a discography that includes 36 titles, this nine-time Grammy® award-winning powerhouse pianist “has been the most consistently innovative artist in Afro-Cuban music in the United States for the past 30 years” (Boston Globe). Don’t miss this legendary Latin music icon as he takes the stage with his quintet for one night only in a very special 75th birthday celebration!

The Annenberg Center offers Philadelphia audiences a thrilling mix of music, theatre and dance performances

that are measurably enriched by the context of the University environment in which they are performed. I’ll

never forget a Dizzy Gillespie concert I heard at the Annenberg Center when I was a Penn student, or a

Batsheva dance piece I saw there many years later as part of Dance Celebration. The dynamism of the audiences was as exciting as the work on stage.

Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak Dance Company THU > FEB 9 > 7:30 Pm FrI > FEB 10 > 8 Pm* SAT > FEB 11 > 2 Pm & 8 Pm

It’s dance theatre at its best when fantasy meets sideshow spectacle in Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak’s master work Oyster, a full-length Philadelphia premiere about a fantastic circus world of wandering street acrobats and other bizarre characters dressed in doll-like make-up, spiky blonde wigs and tutus. Drawing its name from filmmaker Tim Burton’s (Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland) book of short poems and sketches, Oyster is a witty blend of ballet, mime, modern dance, physical comedy and acrobatics employing fantastical costumes and set to an eclectic score. The Village Voice described this masterful work as “part surreal vaudeville, part circus, and part toy store after midnight...a delight for the eye” and the Washington Post states it is “a work of stunning beauty that transcends time and place.”

Spirit of Uganda FrI > mAr 16 > 7:30 Pm*

To the melodic tones of standing drums, dramatic choreography and gorgeous call-and-response vocals, Spirit of Uganda returns to the Annenberg Center and brings to life the sounds and movements of East Africa. Ambassadors for Uganda’s 2.4 million orphans, the company’s 22 vibrant performers, ages 8-18, personify the resilience and promise of Africa’s next generation as they promote awareness of Uganda’s dual crises—AIDS and civil war—and raise funds to support their homeland. Don’t miss this inspiring and energetic group as they “invigorate the stage with that elusive thing called joy” (New York Times).

Jason marsalis & Simone SAT > mAr 17 > 8 Pm*

The youngest brother of New Orleans’s venerable first family of jazz (winners of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award) and the son of jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis has long been recognized as an in-demand drummer and record producer for his work with the Ellis Marsalis Trio and the Marcus Roberts Trio, and he is now receiving critical acclaim for his unique sound on the vibraphones. Hear what all the buzz is about as his amazing vibes quartet treats us to old standards and new gems, connecting with the audience in a way that is “deeply satisfying” (Chicago Tribune). Then, hear Simone—musical icon Nina Simone’s daughter and a highly praised live performer whose impressive résumé includes starring roles in Broadway musicals Rent and Aida—as she shares her broad vocal range and innate lyrical skills and performs new songs from her upcoming album.

We had our first date at the then brand new Annenberg Center in December 1971.

While Penn students, we had the opportunity to see the most fantastic pre-Broadway

productions of the Phoenix Repertory Company. Now, 40 years later, we still

attend concerts at this amazing facility.

DanceBrazil THU > mAr 22 > 7:30 Pm FrI > mAr 23 > 8 Pm* SAT > mAr 24 > 2 Pm & 8 Pm For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences throughout the world with a dazzling fusion of Afro-Brazilian culture, live music, contemporary dance and Capoeira, the African dance/martial arts form that evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement. Enjoy recent works Fluxo & Refluxo and catch a glimpse of Afro-Brazilian rituals in a contemporary context, followed by Banguela, a mesmerizing work built on the rhythmic interludes used by Capoeiristas (martial arts dancers) to calm down and strategize between intense cultural rituals. Under the direction of Artistic Director Jelon Vieira, DanceBrazil will wow audiences with its “crowd-pleasing style of high-octane, high-flying, pelvis swiveling choreography” (New York Times) and its colorful costumes, acrobatic virtuosity and soul-stirring rhythms.

Zakir Hussain & masters of Percussion SAT > APr 7 > 8 Pm*

A national treasure in his native land, Zakir Hussain is among the most internationally successful musicians in the history of India. He has thrilled audiences throughout the world with his sensuous and compelling mastery of tabla, which the Washington Post calls “intoxicating in its intensity,” with a “virtuosity that is barely to be believed.” From meditative classical ragas to high-energy rhythmic drumming and dance, Hussain and his Masters of Percussion will energetically showcase the great breadth of Indian music in a fascinating journey you won’t want to miss!

masters of Tradition Celebrating Irish music in its Purest Form SUn > APr 15 > 7 Pm*

Travel to the Irish coastal town of Bantry, West County Cork, and attend the Masters of Tradition annual Irish music festival without leaving your seat! Now in its ninth year, this prominent festival was developed by renowned fiddler Martin Hayes to expose the heart of Irish traditional music and allow real insight into the musical journeys of Ireland’s greatest musicians as well as the masterful music they play. Now, straight from Ireland, the Annenberg Center brings this festival to you, featuring some of Ireland’s most accomplished musicians including Martin Hayes and Cathal Hayden on fiddle, Iarla Ó Lionnáird on vocals, Dennis Cahill and Seamie O’Dowd on guitar, Máirtín O’Connor on accordion and David Power on uilleann pipes.

Les Ballets Jazz de montréal THU > APr 19 > 7:30 Pm FrI > APr 20 > 8 Pm* SAT > APr 21 > 2 Pm & 8 Pm Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal features neither ballet nor jazz, but instead presents a thrilling fusion of styles and polished technique. An amazing repertoire by some of the best working choreographers and a collection of extraordinarily talented dancers combine to form a compelling and sophisticated company known for its dedication to outstanding programming. With a diverse repertoire featuring works by Crystal Pite (Canada), Rodrigo Pederneiras (Brazil), Mauro Bigonzetti (Italy) and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (Holland), the company will “dazzle you with its technical prowess” and “charm you with its vivid personality” (The Oregonian). Under the direction of Artistic Director Louis Robitaille, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal remains one of Canada’s preeminent dance troupes on the international scene.

Kurt Elling Swings Sinatra SAT > APr 28 > 8 Pm*

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sinatra’s Live in Paris during an evening accented with richly told stories of a fascinating moment in time as can only be told by one of today’s foremost talents—Grammy® winner Kurt Elling. Dubbed “the leading male vocalist of our time” by the New York Times and “Male Singer of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association half a dozen times in the past decade, Elling’s rich virtuoso baritone will dazzle you with astonishing technical mastery and stunning emotional depth.

Kenge Kenge FrI > mAY 4 > 7:30 Pm*

Tremendously popular in their homeland and most widely known in the U.S. for their YouTube performance of “Obama for Change” that went viral during the 2008 presidential election, Kenge Kenge has performed throughout the world and now brings their irresistible dance music to Philadelphia. With a name that means “fusion of small, exhilarating instruments,” Kenge Kenge explores the origins of the Benga pop-music style, which is popular in Kenya the way rumba is in Congo or highlife is in Nigeria. This roots music from the JoLuo community of Western Kenya includes dense textures of rhythm and chant that are overlaid with an unusual assortment of self-made traditional instruments such as the Nyatiti lyre, Bul drums, Nyangile sound box, Ongeng’o metal rings, Asili flute and Oporo horn.

Additional performances are included as part of the Philadelphia International Children’s Festival. Call 215.898.3900 for more information.

mOmIX THU > mAY 17 > 7:30 Pm FrI > mAY 18 > 8 Pm* SAT > mAY 19 > 2 Pm & 8 Pm SUn > mAY 20 > 2 Pm

Don’t miss the latest masterpiece from the wildly imaginative Moses Pendleton—the creator of Lunar Sea, Opus Cactus, Baseball, Orbit, Passion and Botanica. Celebrated for its ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor and the human body, MOMIX returns to the Annenberg Center stage bringing new works about water and re-imagined classic pieces from its impressive 30-year history. These beloved dancer-illusionists pack each performance with wit, beauty, visual fantasy and stunning physicality, leaving audiences floating “out on a dizzying high of pleasure” (Chicago Tribune).

First Person Arts: Grand Slam! SAT > mAY 19 > 8:30 Pm Don’t miss First Person Arts’ annual storytelling Grand Slam! For the first time, the Annenberg Center will host this beloved event as winners of First Person Arts’ monthly StorySlams go head to head for the title of “Best Storyteller in Philadelphia.” Get your tickets early—it’s always a sell-out! Gather before the main event at 6 PM for tasty food and drink (cost not included in ticket price).
