As a college student at Penn in the ‘70s, my cultural horizons expanded dramatically as a result of the Annenberg Center. How extraordinary it was to see Liv Ullmann in A Doll’s House, which was her United States theatrical debut, and Dame Cleo Laine and John Dankworth on one of their early American tours, right on the Penn campus. Did you know that the Constitutional Catalyst and Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, had a lovingly devoted spouse by the name of Deborah Read Franklin? Charming, warm, wise, fearless and abundantly opinionated, the unsung First Lady of Philadelphia takes her long-overdue leap into the historic limelight in this entertaining world premiere. Written and directed by Philadelphia’s own Dr. Roberta Sloan of Temple University, this witty and vivid portrayal of colonial America is all about the “forgotten founding mother,” and how Ben Franklin could not have become who he was without her.

These performances are part of the By Local Series and are supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Wallace Foundation.

Philadelphia puppet artist Hua Hua Zhang and her company Visual Expressions partner with Philadelphia dance company Kun-Yang Lin and composers David Darling and Steven Halpera to treat us to the world premiere of Two Hands—a work that combines dance, music and various types of puppetry and explores how we deal with balance, desire, power, wonder and confusion in our own lives. Born in China where she was one of the leading performers for the award-winning China Puppet Arts Troupe and formally trained at the prestigious Puppet Arts Program at the University of Connecticut, Hua Hua ingeniously uses Asian and Western puppet art to explore universal, cross-cultural themes and promote the peaceful understanding of the differences and similarities among many cultures.These performances are part of the By Local Series and are supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Wallace Foundation.

Hailed by All About Jazz as a true “fusion artist in the best sense of the word,” who “mixes his Cuban roots with tastes of bebop, free jazz, even hip hop and electronica, into a strikingly fresh and spicy modern stew that’s much more than the sum of its ingredients,” Omar Sosa will bring the audience to its feet with his dynamic playing and improvisational mastery. Treasured in both India and Europe, Shantala Shivalingappa is one of the world’s preeminent interpreters of Kuchipudi, a 2,000-year-old classical Indian dance style rooted in the Natya Shastra, an ancient codification of dance, music and theatre. Called the “child of the east and west” for her birth in India and upbringing in Paris and praised as “divinely gifted” and “intoxicating” by the New York Times, Shivalingappa has worked with some of the greatest artists of our time, including Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook and the legendary Pina Bausch. She has captivated audiences worldwide with the vibrant, precise storytelling embodied in her performances, and “erases cultural boundaries with her lightness, wit, and musicality” (The New Yorker). Accompanied by four master musicians, Shivalingappa appears in a special Philadelphia performance of Shiva Ganga, a work that explores the balance between the Hindu gods Shiva, who creates and sustains the universe through dance, and Ganga, who embodies grace and elegance. This performance is co-presented by Sruti, The India Music and Dance Society of Philadelphia.

Straight from Dublin’s acclaimed Gate Theatre, enjoy two exciting new adaptations starring the world’s leading Samuel Beckett interpreter, Barry McGovern, directed by one of Ireland’s rising directors, Tom Creed. Called “ominous and funny” by the Irish Independent and “simply outstanding” by the Guardian, Watt is the extraordinary story of an itinerant character who journeys one day to go work in the remote country home of Mr. Knott. The bizarre adventures of Watt and his struggle to make sense of the world around him are told with elegant simplicity, immense pathos and explosive humor. Endgame tells the amusing tale about the aged and blind Hamm and his servant Clov, co-existing in a mutually dependent and fractious relationship, with only Hamm’s legless parents for company. Hailed as one of Beckett’s most important works and written in the style associated with the Theatre of the Absurd, the play focuses on the themes of repetition, time, isolation and existence.

From down under comes dance thunder! Australia’s Chunky Move is a company that feasts on theatrical invention and high-tech special effects. Their witty and unpredictable works have garnered multiple Helpmann Awards, Australia’s prestigious live performance award. In a Philadelphia premiere, Chunky Move performs its new work, Connected, a collaboration with kinetic sculptor Reuben Margolin and founding Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek. A side-step from the norm for Chunky Move, Connected relies less on digital technology and more on Margolin’s purpose-built, kinetic sculpture. Constructed from wood, recycled plastic, paper and steel, Margolin’s weightless waveform sculpture appears as the agile dancers twist and hurl through space. Beginning with simple movements and hundreds of tiny pieces, the dancers construct the awe-inspiring sculpture in real performance time.

Still Black, Still Proud An African Tribute to James Brown SUn > nOV 20 > 7 Pm*

Discovering the points at which African and American music strike sparks off each other, Pee Wee Ellis (“The Man Who Invented Funk”) and a host of stars including Maceo Parker, Vusi Mahlasela and Vieux Farka Touré bring James Brown’s revolutionary music full circle in this innovative, rhythm-fueled tribute to Afro-funk. This extraordinary line-up of international talent celebrates the lasting legacy of the “Godfather of Soul” and explores the deep relationship between soul, funk and modern African music with timeless hits such as “I Feel Good” and “Gonna Have a Funky Good Time.” Artists from the United States and Africa join together in an ensemble that the Boston Globe dubs “a pancontinental funk-soul supergroup,” and that All About Jazz proclaims is simply “explosive.”

Marie Chouinard, a recipient of Quebec’s Prix Denise Pelletier award, has been a fixture on world stages for more than two decades. Her pioneering company explores the poetics of the body in immediate, intelligible and ever-surprising ways and creates compelling imagery on stage that will sustain and demand your attention. Although her works may be perceived as provocative, they are better viewed as pathways towards freedom and compassion, where humor is possible and beauty is omnipresent. Inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography, Compagnie Marie Chouinard will perform Le sacre du pritemps (Rite of Spring), Prélude à l’aprés-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) and 24 Preludes by Chopin, a jubilant yet solemn work that evokes feelings of passion, introspection and rebellion. These polar opposites are embodied in the work of RUBBERBANDance Group (RBDG) and Artistic Director Victor Quijada. This hip hop master from Los Angeles melds his formal dance training with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and Twyla Tharp with the excitement of hip hop and creates a fresh, new “exciting, seemingly improbable fusion of hip hop, ballet and modern dance” (Los Angeles Times). With a name that means “fusion of small, exhilarating instruments,” Kenge Kenge explores the origins of the Benga pop-music style, which is popular in Kenya the way rumba is in Congo or highlife is in Nigeria. This roots music from the JoLuo community of Western Kenya includes dense textures of rhythm and chant that are overlaid with an unusual assortment of self-made traditional instruments such as the Nyatiti lyre, Bul drums, Nyangile sound box, Ongeng’o metal rings, Asili flute and Oporo horn.
