A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF OUR HAPPY HOPPERS ~ ~ DARWIN ARMIT
From the Everett Herald: September 13, 1934-June 3, 2016 Darwin was born in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada on September 13, 1934. He was married to Marlene Armit in Winnipeg, they
were married for 58 years. They moved to the United States in 1961, and have lived in the
Puget Sound area for 52 years. Together they had three children: Donna (Greg) Poulsen, Linda
Piercy, and Jay (Kim) Armit; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed
visits from his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed square dancing, gardening, and traveling with
friends. Darwin passed away on June 3, 2016 in Marysville, Wash. Memorial Services will be
held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home in
Marysville.

Happy Hopper Fond Memories ~ ~ Darwin and Marlene were open and welcoming
when we were new dancers. Their RV was parked next to ours in Spokane at our very first state
festival and they jokingly tried to come for breakfast when the smell of bacon frying on our
outdoor stove drifted in their window. We always enjoyed their company.
Don & Snookie Carlson
Darwin and Marlene were Hoppers for over 20 years. Both were born and raised in Canada. He
had done many job in his life time. Made shoes, roofed buildings, built frames but mostly was a
telephone lineman climbing many tall poles. And remarkably he was color blind. But successful
at his wiring. He had 2 boys and one girls and a very patient wife. On a trip to California. He
ran out of gas 2 times. while Marlene sat in the car with the kids. One time while working in
their greenhouse he went into the house to fix a sandwich took a nap and realized he had locked
Marlene in the greenhouse. They had held the treasurers job and the presidency of Hoppers. He
was a really talented guy. He was his happiest dancing and working and donut times. He
worked at the Tree Farm helping sell Xmas trees for 18 years. Customers loved him. Shared
sandwiches and sweet rolls with them. They brought the stuff. He was a great round dancer and
a comfortable square dancer too. His boots will be hard to fill.

MT. BAKER COUNCIL REPORT~~
Happy Hopper Delegate Report MBC Meeting June 1, 2016
The next State Meeting will be held in September at Lac-a-do Hall in Olympia. The 2017 State Festival will be held in
Spokane. The 2020 National Convention will also be held in Spokane. The National Convention will no longer funnel
money from the dance to the council or the state that is hosting it. 2020 is the last scheduled National Dance as it is
being canceled after 2020 due to waning attendance.
The Council and the State are looking for updates on club histories. Would anyone like to take on this challenge?
Sky Valley Whirlwinds report they took in $1669 from the Spring Council Dance. Expenses were $459; net profit: $1210.
A check for $484 was presented to the Council. Gailyn and Ron Ploeg received the Illa Williams award for their
contributions to our activity.
The Fall Council Dance will be Round ‘em Up, Square ‘em Up, presented by the Mount Baker Singles, on Saturday,
October 29, 2016, from 7-10 p.m. at the Stanwood Middle School. Scoot Coon and Brent Mawdsley calling, Debbie
Taylor cueing. There will be an inexperienced dancer hall.
There are currently 37 squares signed up to dance the Mob Squad flash mob at the Puyallup Fair on September 10. If
you’re interested in joining this record-breaking (we hope) event, Rod and Bertha have the signup sheets. The sign up’s
are due back to the organizers by around June 18.
Mount Baker Council Lesson brochures were distributed at the meeting and are available from your Council reps.
Don Carlson, the new Nominating Rep, would like each club to submit the names of 5 people who you think would be
good candidates for Council and State leadership positions and who might be willing to serve. Submit your suggestions
directly to him and he will review and contact them.
Michaela Stahl, the recipient of the Youth scholarship has graduated college with straight A’s and with honors.
Congratulations to her!
Rick Kiser made a motion that future Council Dances be free, since the Council has over $29,000. The motion was tabled
until the September meeting to give the Council time to research the ramifications if this were done.
The Freewheelers have changed their schedule. Next year they will be dancing Mainstream on the first Sunday of the
month, and Plus on the third Sunday. The Woodinville Square Crows will now be dancing on the fourth Saturday of the
month.

The Happy Hoppers welcome two new members Terry Poole and Ginette
LaCasse.
Winthrop Red Barn Dance September 23 & 24~~~~for those wanting to
go the Winthrop Festival, please send in your registration papers so your
presence will count. Remember, we want to give the old boot to another
club this year!!The old boot is given to the club that has the second highest amount of members that
were previously registered to attend the Winthrop Festival. So even if a club has the most members
attending if the members were not registered by the registration date cut off they are not counted. Last
year there were three clubs that had thirteen members in attendance but not everyone registered
ahead of time. So we got the old boot for the second year in a row.
For additional info call: 509-979-2607 or 509-270-9264 Email: [email protected]
New HH lessons begin Monday, Sept. 19 for 16 weeks with Scott Coon (no
class Dec. 26, Jan. 2 and Jan. 16). We'd love for all our HH members to come and help Angel
our new students. Angels are free for the lessons. After graduation on Jan. 23, we'll have 4
workshops focusing on mainstream styling and etiquette with Steve Noseck ($6 per person for
everyone, including Angels) - workshop dates are Jan. 30, Feb. 6, 13 and 27. We hope you'll
come and dance with our new graduates at the workshops; they will be informative and fun.

appreciate your contributions each Month!!! There has been a lot of positive feedback for
the Newsletter so let’s keep it going. Thank you, Anne
Hi Happy Hoppers, If you were out dancing this past week, you may have seen some dancers wearing black and white "Mob Squad" buttons. We have received 25 "Mob Squad" buttons to distribute to Happy Hoppers who would like to participate in a flash mob square dance at the Puyallup Fair on Sat. Sept. 10th. Those who sign up will receive free entrance into the fairgrounds that day. Regular attire requested to keep it a surprise. The purpose is to attract a record number of dancers and to promote square dancing in our region. At a time and place still to be determined, we will meet and form squares, dance a tip, and then blend back into the crowd again. Rod and I will be bringing the buttons and sign-up sheet to the Fogcutters dance on Friday. We have already given out some buttons at our club meeting, but there are still some left. If you plan to participate please get your buttons from us!! NOTE: Bertha has given out her allotted buttons however buttons may be available from other clubs. Thanks so much, Bertha
