WEST TEXAS A&M 58ANGELO STATE 41LEGRAND STADIUM AT 1ST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION FIELD // SAN ANGELO, TEXASSEPT. 27, 2014 // ATTENDANCE: 5,946

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State football team took a 35-21 lead into halftime on LSC rival West Texas A&M but were unable to sustain the momentum in the second half falling 58-41 at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field on Saturday night. The Rams (2-1, 1-1 LSC) and Buffs (2-2, 1-1 LSC) combined for 1,113 yards of total offense including 827 in the air. ASU built a 35-21 lead on WT with an explosive first half before the Buffs rallied in the second half. ASU struck first after the Ram defense forced a three and out. Ryan Byrd was the focus of the drive touching the ball on four of the seven plays. The junior transfer scampered for 24 yards to take it deep into WT territory. Four plays later he carried it three yards in for a touchdown to make it 7-0 ASU. The Ram defense limited WT’s offense to just three plays on the next drive. ASU capitalized with a touchdown. Kyle Washington found Byrd on a screen on the ninth play of the drive for a 19-yard touchdown to put ASU up 14-0. The two team’s offenses would find rhythm as seven-straight touchdowns would be scored. West Texas A&M started working the deep pass as Preston Rabb hit Donald Dimitri on a 27-yard pass and Jeremy Watson for a 44-yard pass to put the Buffs deep in ASU territory. Rabb would keep it for a 1-yard run to cut the lead to 14-7 to start the second quarter. Angelo State responded with a 10 play 75-yard drive to make it 21-7 ASU in the first quarter. Washington hit Brett Raspberry for two completions before Byrd scored his third touchdown of the half on a 30-yard run. West Texas took the ball down the field 75 yards as Geremy Alridge-Mitchell would score on a 1-yard run to make it 21-14. Washington again led the Rams down the field finding Dakarai Pecikonis on a 25-yard strike before hitting Chris Omigie for a 13-yard touchdown for a 28-14 lead. WT wasted little time responded on the next drive. Rabb hit Jordan Jones for a 27-yard touchdown to make it 28-21 with just 30 seconds left until the half. Anthony Yancy electrified the crowd before halftime as he took the ensuing kickoff back 100-yards for a touchdown and a 35-21 lead going into the break. Yancy finished the game with 195 returning yards breaking Garrett Tidewell’s single-game record of 182 set against Texas State in 2009. The Buffs came out of the second half and drove the ball down 57 yards in nine plays. Rabb would find Watson twice on the drive for 10-yard and 22-yard completions. WT would take the ball to the ASU 12 before the Rams defense forced a 29-yard field goal by Connor Hallabaugh. The Rams were forced into a three and out and WT took back over. Rabb found Watson on the second play of the drive for a 56-yard touchdown to cut the Angelo State lead to 35-31 at the 10:29 mark of the third quarter. Washington got ASU going on the next drive. The junior quarterback hit Pecikonis on a 27-yard pass and followed it up with a 42-yard pass to Talon Smith to take the ball to the 2-yard line. Blake Smith scored on a 2-yard run to put ASU up 41-31. It took the Buffs just four plays to answer. Rabb found Watson on back-to-back passes of 42 and 30 to put the ball at the ASU three. Gabe Tuata scored his first touchdown of the game to cut the ASU lead to 41-38. The Rams were forced to punt after the ensuing drive stalled at the WT 37-yard line. Sam Fowler’s punt was blocked by Alex Tucci and returned 48-yards by LaPear Willrich to give WT its first lead of the game at 45-41. Washington would throw his second interception of the game on the next drive after the ball was hit as the Humble native was throwing. The Rams defense held the Buffs to a 23-yard field goal by Hollabaugh to extend WT’s lead to 55-41. ASU turned the ball over on downs at the ASU 28 and Hollabuagh hit his third field goal of the game. The 33-yard field goal would make the final score 58-41.

ANGELO STATE 45No. 16 MIDWESTERN STATE 31MEMORIAL STADIUM // WICHITA FALLS, TEXASOCT. 4, 2014 // ATTENDANCE: 7,502

WICHITA FALLS – Angelo State quarterback Kyle Washington ran for a career-high 250 yards and threw three touchdowns to help lead the Rams to a 45-31 Lone Star Conference win over No. 16-ranked Midwestern State on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Rams (3-1, 2-1 LSC) forced four MSU (3-1, 2-1 LSC) turnovers in the game with Paul Mason recording an interception and forcing and recovering a fumble as ASU earned its first win over a ranked opponent since 2012 and its first win in Wichita Falls since the 1999 season. ASU finished the game with 531 yards of offense and won the turnover battle 4-0 over the Mustangs in its first road game of the season. Washington’s career rushing night came on 24 carries for an average of 10.4 yards per carry and he also found Talon Smith, Dakarai Pecikonis and Chris Omigie for touchdown passes. Washington, who had a previous career-high with 185 rushing yards last season against the Mustangs, completed 16 of 28 pass attempts for 169 yards passing in the game and helped spearhead a second half where the Rams outscored the Mustangs 31-14 after ASU went into halftime trailing 17-14. Byrd ran for 81 yards on his 10 carries, while Smith had 33 yards on the night for the Rams who rushed for 362 yards on the night for an average of 8.0 yards per carry. Washington finished the night with 419 total yards and four touchdowns. Rush Seaver led the Angelo State defense with 14 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and Blair Smith also recorded a double-digit tackle performance with 10. Ryan Clapsaddle added eight tackles and had an interception, while London Dial had seven tackles and forced a fumble. Mason had three tackles to go along with his interception and fumble recovery for the defense which recorded five sacks with Matthew Gholston sacking the MSU quarterback Jake Glover twice and Richard Franklin, Clayton Callicutt and John Siliga each recording one sack. Jarred Ross accounted for another takeaway when he recorved the Dial forced fumble. ASU grabbed the lead which it wouldn’t relinquish on a 39-yard touchdown reception by Smith from Washington to give the Rams a 28-24 lead with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown grab capped a seven-play, 73-yard drive which took only 2:52 off the clock in a third quarter which saw three lead changes and was ended with a Mason interception. The fourth takeaway from the ASU offense quickly led to more Ram points as Washington found Pecikonis for a 6-yard touchdown pass to give the Rams a 35-24 lead. Jake Glover ended an eight-play drive for the Mustangs with a 14-yard touchdown run to respond to the Pecikonis touchdown with 11 minutes to play in the game to cut the score to 35-31 before a 19-yard field goal by Peter Marquez gave the Rams a seven-point lead. The field goal was set up by a 54-yard run by Washington to the 7-yard line, but the Rams had to settle for the field goal after two runs got the ball to the 2 before a third-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete. ASU added to its lead with a 7-yard touchdown run by Byrd to cap an eight-play, 79-yard drive in which Byrd ran for 56 yards on four carries. The Rams took a 21-14 lead early in the second half when Washington found Omigie on a 12-yard touchdown pass which was set up by a defensive play by Mason who stripped a MSU ball carrier to give the ASU offense the ball. The acrobatic touchdown reception by Omigie capped a seven-play, 49-yard drive which included a fourth down conversion by the Rams when Washington found a hole along the left side of the offensive line to get a first down on a 4th-and-1. MSU reclaimed its lead at 24-21 with a 13-yard run by Dante Taylor run to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive. Midwestern State claimed a 10-7 lead with an Andy Alkhazshvilly 45-yard field goal and extended its lead when Glover and Straton hooked up again for a 37-yard touchdown four minutes into the second quarter. ASU stopped the 17-0 run with a 4-yard touchdown run by Smith with 5:32 to play in the first half to finish off a seven-play, 48-yard drive which was set up by a Clapsaddle interception of Glover. The scoring drive was highlighted by a 17-yard run by Smith to the 11-yard line where he leaped a defender to gain about five more yards.

It is the senior’s second kickoff return for a touchdown this season and of his career. The Rams defense forced a punt and received good field position after only a 29-yard punt at the ENMU 47-yard line. Washington threw two-straight passes to Yancy to put the ball at the ENMU 10-yard line. Warren Truesdale carried it in for his first career rushing touchdown three plays later to give ASU its first lead of the night at 14-7. The Greyhounds moved the ball to the 50-yard line on the ensuing drive when Spight rushed up the middle and was held up at the line. Blair Smith ripped the ball out and Hanson IV picked it up off the bounce and rumbled for a 49-yard touchdown with 1:48 to go in the first quarter. ENMU responded by driving down the field to the Rams 15-yard line and faced a fourth down. Burrma would find Aaron Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown to cut ASU’s lead to 21-14. Paul Mason picked off Burrma, his third of the season, a few drives later to give ASU the ball at the ENMU 18-yard line. Washington scored his only rushing touchdown of the game from 6-yards out to make it 28-14 at the half. ASU was limited to 52 yards of offense in the first half while ENMU racked up 252 yards. The Rams came out of halftime and went for it on fourth and one at the ENMU 44 but Washington was stopped for no gain. The Greyhounds capitalized and scored on a 2-yard run by Spoight but missed the extra point. The Rams defense held strong after Peter Marquez kicked a 23-yard field goal for a 31-20 advantage. ASU would limit the Greyhounds to only 54 yards of offense over the next six drives by forcing two punts, three turnovers on downs and one interception. STEPHENVILLE – Angelo State will host a first-round Lone Star Conference football playoff game next week after Chris Omigie caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Washington with 31 seconds remaining and Fred Lawrence intercepted a Tarleton State pass to seal a 34-31 win over the Texans on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Rams (6-2, 5-2 LSC) overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to snap a 12-game losing streak to Tarleton State (4-4, 4-3 LSC) and will now host Midwestern State at 7 p.m. next Saturday at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. ASU played tough throughout the game and overcame three first-half turnovers by gaining 529 yards of offense and scoring a high-pressure touchdown on a 4th-and-1 with Dakarai Pecikonis taking a pass from Washington 16 yards to cut the Rams’ deficit to 31-26 with 11:49 to play before Omigie and Washington connected on the game-winner. Down 17-3 at halftime, the Rams cut the deficit to 17-6 with a 40-yard field goal from Peter Marquez but saw the Texans march down the field and score on a Zach Henshaw 1-yard touchdown run with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter to take a 24-6 lead over the Rams. ASU found its first real offensive stride on the next drive when Washington found Pecikonis for a 55-yard touchdown pass to cut TSU’s lead to 24-13 with 6:10 to play. The Rams cut the lead to single-digits six minutes later with running back Trey Green taking a pass 16-yards for a touchdown to cap an eight-play 80-yard drive. Green’s touchdown was his first of the season and came on the first play of the fourth quarter. With ASU surging, the Texans responded quickly with Jabari Anderson breaking free for a 62-yard touchdown run. With Green’s score cutting the lead to five, Anderson once again made it an 11-point game with Tarleton leading 31-19 with 13:36 to play. With the ball at their own 23, the Rams took the ball down the field on nine plays in only 1:47 with Washington finding Pecikonis for the 16-yard touchdown on a fourth down play. The drive, which cut the deficit to 31-26, was highlighted by a 20-yard reception from Omigie and a 9-yard run by Green to set up the play. ASU had the ball back down five with 8:23 remaining. A quick tempo, score-fast offense then used 6:18 of clock and 15 plays and were unable to come away with points. The promising drive included a 15-yard pass to Brett Rasberry for a first down on a 3rd-and-13 and a 4-yard run by Green on a 3rd-and-3. ASU’s drive stalled and ended when Washington threw an incompletion to Omigie in the corner of the end zone with 2:05 remaining in the game. With TSU leading by five, the game seemed to be in the home team’s control, but the ASU defense held Henshaw to three yards on first down, put Anderson down for a 3-yard loss on second down and then saw Zed Woerner throw an incompletion. A 23-yard punt by Blake Barnes followed and ASU had the ball back at the TSU 33 with 1:08 remaining in the game. Washington found Talon Smith for a 23-yard gain on first down to take the ball down to the 10, Green took a handoff for six yards to the TSU 4-yard line and then Washington hit Omigie for the 4-yard game winner on the third play. HOUGHTON, MICH. – The No. 23-ranked Angelo State football team had to overcome a 21-point deficit and withstand a last second field goal attempt that went wide right to defeat No. 18 Michigan Tech 42-41 at Sherman Field in the NCAA Division II First Round. The Rams (9-2) trailed the entire game until Kyle Washington found Talon Smith on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 3:31 left in the fourth quarter.
