Chism now has five touchdowns and 38 receptions in his ASU career after two weeks of play. Bibbs matched his career-high with seven receptions at Western Oregon, including catching two passes to start the game-winning drive and then also catching the two-point conversion to make it a seven-point game.

ASU QUARTERBACKSCharlie Rotherham threw for 158 yards on 16 completions and the touchdown to Ayo last Saturday against ACU. He was picked off two times in the game a week after leading the Rams on the game-winning drive in the season-opener. Rotherham threw for 199 yards on a 17-for-26 day without an interception in the first game of the season. He has now thrown for 1,916 yards on 165 career completions. A Green Bay native, Rotherham threw his first touchdown of the season on a 31-yard pass to Chism with 13:08 remaining in the third quarter to give the Rams a 10-0 lead. ASU’s Payne Sullins also saw time at quarterback in both games, throwing for 87 yards on eight completions in Oregon and then completing two passes for 17 yards against the Wildcats.

ANGELOSPORTS.COM

MONMOUTH, Oregon – Th e Angelo State football team started off the 2018 season with a dramatic win, taking the lead with 52 seconds left on a pass from Charlie Rotherham to wide receiver Lawson Ayo to secure a 24-17 win over Western Oregon on Saturday at McArthur Field.

Th e ASU defense forced three turnovers and had fi ve sacks, led by Hunter Kyle who had two interceptions and a two-sack performance from Markus Jones who now has 21.5 sacks in his career. Simon Maxey recorded the third turnover, an interception with 23 seconds remaining in the game to seal the win for the Rams.

Th e game-winning drive took less than a minute in a game that lasted more than four hours aft er the Wolves took the lead with 1:46 left to play aft er a 74-yard pass set them up for a touchdown and a 17-16 lead over the Rams.

“I’m really proud of our kids,” said ASU head coach Will Wagner, who improved to 7-1 in season openers leading the program. “Even aft er the long pass from Western Oregon, our guys were still positive on the

sideline which was good to hear. Our off ense struggled today, but they got in that rhythm on that last drive to move the ball down the fi eld. We had guys step up and make plays when they had to and we are going back home at 1-0.”

Rotherham completed back-to-back passes to Tashani Bibbs to start the game-winning drive before hitting Keke Chism for 11 yards, forcing a Western Oregon timeout. He then hit Ayo for a 16-yard touchdown.

“I knew that on that drive we were going to do what we needed to do,” Rotherham said. “I felt confi dent and trusted everyone on that fi eld. Our defense had been playing a great game and it was our turn to do our part and fi nish it off . Th e game of a season can be a grinder but this is something we can build on. We have to fi x a lot of mistakes, but coming away with a win on the road is really promising for our team.”

Th e game-winning drive needed only six plays with Rotherham hitting Bibbs on the fi rst two passes, Chism the third and then fi nding Ayo in the corner of the end zone. Th e Rams would add a two-point

conversion with Rotherham hitting running back Lloyd Howard just beyond the goal line to make it a seven-point game. Rotherham fi nished the game 17 for 26 with 199 passing yards and two touchdowns. His longest completion of the day went to Chism for 31 yards and a touchdown to start the third quarter that gave the Rams a 10-0 lead. Chism fi nished the day with a team-leading 106 receiving yards on seven catches. Two other Rams, Bibbs and Ayo, also had seven catches in the contest. Angelo State gained 286 yards through the air overall. ASU gained 185 yard on the ground, with running back Tyrese Nathan gaining 134 on 23 attempts. Th e sophomore averaged 5.8 yards per carry and had one touchdown. Nathan scored the second ASU touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run with 8:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to cap an 11-play, 88-yard drive that gave the team a 16-10 lead.

Defensively, ASU limited Western Oregon to 313 yards total on the day. Th ey were led by Grant Aschenbeck with 13 tackles and Kyle who had 10.

RECAP: ASU opens season with win at Western Oregon

RECAP: Rams fall to Wildcats after first-half rallyABILENE – Angelo State scored 24-unanswered points to take a 24-17 halft ime lead over Abilene Christian but couldn’t continue that momentum into the second half as the Wildcats earned a 41-24 non-conference win over the Rams on Saturday at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium.

Th e Rams (1-1) and Wildcats (1-1) were playing for the fi rst time since 2012 when ACU went to NCAA Division I FCS play aft er the two programs had played every year since 1964.

Down 17-0 in the second quarter, Angelo State junior Larry Johnson took a kickoff back 88 yards for the fi rst touchdown of the game for the Rams. Johnson scored the second touchdown of his career aft er cutting through the ACU kickoff team and give ASU a response to Abilene Christian’s fast start. On the next ASU

possession Charlie Rotherham would cap an eight-play, 89-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Lawson Ayo in the middle of the end zone.

“I’m really proud of the way our guys fought,” ASU head coach Will Wagner said. “In that fi rst half we could have laid down when they hit us big but having the kickoff return and interception return to score in all phases was great to see. Th ere are a lot of things we need to improve on. We can’t sulk on it with a week before Kingsville comes to town for the start of Lone Star Conference play. Th ey are an unbelievable team so we’re going to have to fi nd a way to put four quarters together. Th e second quarter tonight was great, but we just made too many mistakes in the third and fourth that hurt us.”

ASU would score its fi rst defensive touchdown of the season in the waning

moments of the second quarter when sophomore linebacker Donavyn Jackson picked off a pass and returned it 29 yards down the home sideline for a touchdown. A San Angelo native, Jackson’s interception return was the fi rst of his career and gave the Rams a 21-17 lead with 1:59 remaining in the fi rst half. Connor Flanigan capped the 24-0 run of points with a 41-yard fi eld goal as time expired to take the Rams into halft ime with the lead.

Leddy French led the ASU defense with 11 tackles, while Darrick Dickerson and Grant Aschenbeck recorded 10 tackles each. Aschenbeck now has 23 tackles through two games of his senior season, while Markus Jones had nine tackles with two for loss. Dickerson also had a second-quarter interception aft er the fi rst ASU touchdown.
