AN ELK TALE...Barbwire was only two days old when he got snagged up in a local rancher’s fence. That’s why his name – his original name, his first name – was Barbwire. Maybe an odd name for an infant elk, but then most elk proba-bly don’t get named, much less get a few names. He was also called “Baby,” and “Elliott” – like the elk sculp-ture in the median of North Angel Fire Road heading up to the ski area. And more than once he was called “Damn It,” which he an-swered to as well as any-thing else. The rest of the elk herd – including his mother, who lingered by his side at the fence longer than the rest of the herd – was forced to leave him there.

ON SHOVEL RACINGIt was February of 1984, having arrived in Moreno Valley, just four months ear-lier. Hired initially to run the retail operations at the ski area, my rental shop staff asked if they could work through the night into the wee hours on Sunday morn-ing. With the help of our pilot and current Angel Fire Ski School Director, Robin May, who had arrived from Durango, their request was driven by the‚ “need for speed‚“ and to ready their Modified Shovel for the race taking place the next day. Having no idea how one could or would want to modify a shovel, I viewed with curiosity, after hours of digging it out of it‘s frozen tomb, the carcass of what would be the Rental Shops entry into the competition.

With over 210 inches of annual snowfall, when Angel Fire goes white the

landscape is transformed into a gigantic playground. Start your play on

one of the 76 ski and snowboarding trails, suitable for skills of all levels.

The mountain also sports 30-some acres of gladed tree skiing. Snowshoeing,

snow skating, snow-biking, snowmobiling…what can’t you do with snow! You

can even do some horseback riding or kick back and enjoy the peace of a sleigh

ride. If you’re seeking solitude away from the slopes, Angel Fire has that too.

Set off into the wilds of the national forests on backcountry skis or snowshoes.

Or head over to Eagle Nest Lake for some ice fishing. For those determined

to challenge the pull of gravity two award-winning freestyle terrain parks

await. Warm the kids up with some hot chocolate and send them out to the

Polar Coaster, the biggest tubing park in the Southern Rockies. Oh and don’t

miss that sunset. The brief evening winter glow turns the snow-blanketed

mountains dramatic oranges and reds. It doesn’t last long but you’ll find it

breathtaking. Then rest up in front of a cozy fireplace.

The rugged beauty of the high mountain winter goes soft and gentle as the

air warms and snow melts into the slopes. It is summer time in the high

country. Bright green grasses bust out everywhere. Wildflowers, like the

eye-grabbing red Indian Paintbrush or the deep purple Monkshood, blanket

the fields and forest floors. A whole range of fresh activities beckons. After a

heart-pumping morning of flying down world-class mountain biking trails

or soaring over the tree-tops on the new Zipline Adventure Tour head down

to Angel Fire’s 18-hole PGA Championship Golf Course for an afternoon on

the links. And that is just day one! Fill up day two with fishing, bird watching

or rafting. Or maybe tennis and then a chair lift ride up the mountain to the

perfect picnic spot is more your thing. Is hiking more your style? Trails leave

from the center of town and amble off into some of the largest wilderness

areas in the country. You might also consider a horseback ride, an ATV tour

or a hunting trip. Angel Fire offers up a ridiculous number of blue-sky days

ideal for a relaxing family vacation outdoors in the New Mexico high country.

ON DOWNHILL BIKINGIf you look up the name Tom Shearon on Angel Fire Resort’s website, you’ll see he’s logged 820,000 vertical feet this summer (up from 526,000 last year, his first year). He’s at the top of the leader board with 410 runs. What you won’t see is that he’s a retired 67-year-old Albuquerque man, and the 2013 summer riding season was still underway. “I was a little appre-hensive when I first started mountain biking, but enjoy-ing living in the mountains and being an instructor at Ski Santa Fe in winter, I quickly fell in love with it.” Originally from Memphis, Tom didn’t discover his pas-sion for the mountains until he started skiing at age 45. But already he’s earned the nickname “Downhill Tom.” One friend noted that between the two sports, Tom spends half his life on ski lifts.

ON BEAR-ROPINGAnyone who has spent a good deal of their life out-side in northern New Mexico usually has a few tales to tell about bears. One of the last Grizzlies sighted in New Mexico was on a ranch just outside Angel Fire. And then there’s the tale about a local guide getting bit on the butt by a black bear. Local Kay Moore re-members that at the family’s Black Lake ranch sometime in the 1930s, her father Bruce Bull loved hunting on horseback, his greyhounds coming along to keep him company and help with the hunt. They came up on a black bear which was then treed by the dogs. Bruce then roped the bear and decided to drag it home. At the house he yelled to his mother to come out and see what he’d brought her.

C olor is the name of the game in Angel Fire. The sunsets

never fail to satisfy. Wildflowers poke their heads up in

the spring and peak in July. Fall colors burst across the

mountainsides for weeks in late September and early Octo-

ber. That color pulls you towards it and there is no point in

saying ‘no’. Grab a daypack; load up on water, sunscreen and

a delicious lunch. Don’t forget your rain gear as our moun-

tain weather can change rapidly. Oh and take a map along!

Within an hour drive of our town you will find the Wheeler

Peak Wilderness Area, the Latir Peak Wilderness Area and the

giant Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area. Just up the

Valley is Eagle Lake State Park. Cimarron Canyon State Park

is just to the east. With all that protected land it is hard not to

augment that pull of the colors with some fabulous wildlife

watching. Black bears, elk herds and Bald Eagles move up and

down the spine of the mountains. Lace up those boots and

head on up one of the hundreds of trails criss-crossing the for-

est. At this altitude your heart will pump a little harder. The

air is clean so breathe deep. Take only pictures and leave only

footprints and above all, relax.

ON THE ZIPLINE...Flying on a zipline over trees down the mountain at Angel Fire Resort, I found myself screaming and hollering with the pure adrenaline rush of it all. I had to take a lot of deep breaths but I love speed and just went for it. By the time we got to the super zip ride, I dared to stick my legs out in front like a luge rider to gain more speed. It was terrifying yet absolutely exhilarating. I was born in the Neth-erlands 71 years ago; a to-tally flat landscape and lots of water. Everybody learned to swim as kids so about the highest thing around was the high dive. Maybe that’s why I have always lived with such a huge fear of heights.

A FAVORITE FESTIVALIt started simply enough 17 years ago – a newspaper calendar listing: “7 p.m. Music from Angel Fire concert”. We love music, especially coun-try & western, so we decided to go. Little did we know then that the magic of our first MFAF concert would evolve until we were tightly woven in to the tapestry of this organization by the threads of beautiful chamber music, friendships with the amazing and talented musicians, and being part of a dedicated volunteer community that continues to enrich our lives. While we have always loved many kinds of music, cham-ber music was never at the top of the list, but the de-lights of MFAF have changed all that.

A ROAD TRIPLate in September is a great time to get out and really ex-plore the Enchanted Circle. The sky is as blue as it gets, the air is clean and the leaves of the aspens are beginning to change from their verdant green to the iridescent colors of gold and copper color. Taking the Mustang con- vertible out for what might be the last time of the year, I headed out with my friend to see what was happening in the Enchanted Circle. We leave Angel Fire at 9 AM on a beautiful clear morning and headed north toward Eagle Nest. At Eagle Nest Lake State Park Visitor Center, we sat on the deck overlooking the lake to see if we could spot the eagles soaring out over the lake.

ON VICTORAs a young boy, Victor slept some nights under the cov-er of a buffalo robe on the porch of his grandmother’s house. There, under the dark- ness of the robe, he read a boyhood book of adventure with a small light. An icy Midwest wind ran across the fields at his farm blow-ing dirt and cold at him; but like his family inside, he was tucked in, protected by the heavy robe, often waking under snow in the morning. He would be protected for a while, but could not be pro-tected from what life was to hand him. One day, out from under the weight of that robe, would emerge a highly evolved man that grew and settled into greatness— Dr. Victor Walter Westphall.

VIETNAM MEMORIAL

After learning of their son David’s death in Vietnam, the Dr. Victor

Westphall family founded the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood

Chapel on a hill looking south to Angel Fire. It became the nation’s first

Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Today, a state park with free admission, it has

a national reputation as an invaluable site for veterans of all wars and their

families. While the chapel, always open to the public, nurtures the emotional

and spiritual setting of the place, the Visitor Center feeds the imagination

of what it was like to serve in Vietnam. Photographs, banners, video, soldier

artifacts fill the 6000 square foot center. Outside is a Huey helicopter. Guided

tours available. Visitor Center open 9-5 daily. Limited winter hours.

VETERANS WELLNESS & HEALING CENTER

Targeting the need to treat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress,

local leaders founded the National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center,

helping veterans face their fears. The center focuses on creative therapies,

Angel Fire is an ideal place to live and raise a family. It’s

not just beautiful here, we have crystal clear air year

around. After work, you can get out and enjoy the cli-

mate and clear your mind. We have four distinct, spectacular

seasons, and it’s nearly always sunny; we’re at the same lat-

itude as Mykonos, Greece. You can zip from home to work

in just a few minutes with no stop lights. In Angel Fire, the

only traffic jam happens when everyone stops for a herd of elk

crossing the road.

LIFESTYLEIn Angel Fire, we have plenty of peace and quiet. Forget honk-

ing horns, sirens, and the fast-paced city life. Instead, sit out-

side and count the stars or listen to the elk bugle. Angel Fire

is home to artists, writers and internet professionals. When

you have scenery like ours, it doesn’t take much to become

inspired and create your next masterpiece. You’re family in

Angel Fire. We’re informal and personal, with a strong sense

of community.

ON EDUCATIONThe following email came from a student who had decided to leave Moreno Valley High School after his Junior year and entered United World College for the last year of high school. He wrote this to a teacher who is very exacting in her ex-pectations of students. “So, I realize that it’s been a while, and that my very existence may well have slipped entirely from your consciousness, but I’m gonna go ahead and use the beauty of social networking to restore my amazingness to your, already nostalgic, I’m sure, mindset. Ok, no, but seriously.Despite how amazing life is at UWC (United World College) in Canada, I do occasional-ly feel a bit of nostalgia for the trailer-park lifestyle at MVHS, and that’s kinda why I’m writing.

The movie is largely being filmed in New Mexico on a special western town built just west of Albuquerque. Some scenes were filmed near Durango, Colorado, and some in the Angel Fire area...actually, some scenes filmed within walking dis-tance of our house here in Angel Fire! For the cast and crew party—the company rented the entire Country Club—Johnny Depp’s band played as well…Son Camer-on is working as a waiter at the Sunset Grille, the closest restaurant to the Resort Hotel which is crammed full of crew—all good tippers, I am informed…

HEALTH CARE

Our Moreno Valley Health Care Clinic is staffed by medical

professionals including a doctor, physician’s assistant and

nurses. It is equipped with X-ray and other typical clinic ser-

vices. Our local fire department has ambulances and a highly

trained EMT staff. Just a half-hour away, Holy Cross Hospital

in Taos is a 47-bed acute care facility. We have a dentist and

veterinarian, too.

SHOPPING & DINING

Fine dining, New Mexican, pizza joint or picnic in the park,

Angel Fire has cuisine choices for different tastes. Scope out

the shopping scene from unique ski shops to chic boutiques.

STAYING GREEN

Reduce, reuse, recycle. Angel Fire is doing its part as guard-

ian of the planet with an active recycling program: cardboard,

aluminum, plastic, scrap metal, batteries, paper, glass and

magazines. Recycling trailers are located around town.

EDUCATION

You don’t have to live in a large city to give your children a

top-notch education. Our elementary and middle school is

acknowledged as one of New Mexico’s most innovative, and

Moreno Valley High School is one of the nation’s top-ranked

charter high schools. Students love the four day week.

BUSINESS FRIENDLY

Our community is committed to an economic development

strategic plan that encourages business growth and supports

business retention. Our Village leadership and Chamber of

Commerce are committed to helping local businesses get start-

ed and keep going. You’ll find them approachable and willing

to work creatively to ensure a local environment that enables

businesses to grow and prosper. Unlike so many parts of New

Mexico, the Village of Angel Fire has sufficient water rights to

support continuing residential and commercial growth.

Tucked between two state parks (Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon)

the village of Eagle Nest is just 10 miles up the Moreno Valley from Angel

Fire. A distinct community that’s close to everything, locals say it’s “like

stepping back in time, with the amenities of today.”

Uncrowded, friendly, fun for all ages, all seasons. Shops and restaurants.

Motels, cabins and nearly 250 RV sites in town or nearby. World-class trout

fishing in the lake and nearby streams. Eagle Nest is rustling up fun for ages

with special events and promotions throughout the summer and over the hol-

idays. Eagle Nest is a sought out destination, both summer and winter, with

a breathtaking autumn season. Visit the famous High Country Arts & Crafts

Festival, July 4th extravaganza with fireworks over the lake, Ice Fishing Derby,

Fish Fest, and Polar Bear Plunge New Year’s Day! Visit the Enchanted Circle

Gateway Museum and explore our mining history.
