REFLECTION ON THE 30TH
SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME-C (Sirach 35:12- 14.16-18; 2 Timothy 4:6-
8.16-18; Luke 18:9-14)
By: Fr. Herbert Camacho
HOW CAN THE GRACE OF GOD FILL
US, IF WE ARE TOO MUCH FULL OF
OURSELVES?
On this 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we
shall be hearing another lesson about
prayer, particularly our disposition before
God, and how to make our prayer a
genuine and sincere one.
Normally, we try to associate ourselves
with the Pharisees and Publicans, but I
guess, we are a mixture of both. Wala
-
-2-
namang taong purong pariseo o purong
publikano. Walang taong perfect na
perfect at sukdulan ang kasamaan, dahil
isang bahagi natin ay matuwid, isang
bahagi ay makasalaan. Kaya nga sa
misa, we start it with the Penitential Rite.
We come to the Lord with all our mixed
characters, being aware of what we need
before God. Humility is the name of the
game, which the Publican readily
expressed in the Gospel. He stood at a
distance; he didnt dare to look up; and
kept on beating his breast. He went home
justified, and not the Pharisee because of
his humility, and his readiness to accept
God to fill up what is lacking in him. The
Pharisee was not justified by God not
because he is a sinner nor for what he
lacks, but rather, because he looks down
to others, for he simply believed that he is
better compared to the Publican, to the
point of making himself believed that he
has no need of anything even God.
The first reading from the book of Sirach
tells us that we cannot bribe God. Hindi
pwedeng suhulan ang Diyos. God being
a supreme God is not corrupted. Hindi
nadadala sa lagay. He is fair, just, and
does not play favorites. God sees us as his
children and as a Father, He loves all of
us. Malamabot ang puso ng Diyos sa mga
mahihina --- widows, vulnerable, helpless,
who lacks not only material resources, but
those who have nothing to cling on. They
are in most need, and God sees their
helplessness. They cry out to God in their
need, which makes the heart of God
pierced. It touches the heart of God.
Bakit? Sapagkat tanging ang Diyos ang
malalapitan. Tanging ang Diyos ang
pwedeng maasahan. In short, mga taong
nangangailangan sa Diyos. Those who
say, I need God. I cant do anything
without God.
That is the justice of God. His judgment is
always on the side of the poor, the lowly.
He does not ignore the orphans or the
widows who cry for help. The first
disposition that we need to have every
time we pray is humility. It is only when we
are aware of our own need, our being
lowly, that God can fill what is lacking in
us.
The second reading tells us about the last
days of St. Paul, writing his farewell to his
friend, Timothy. It speaks of humility in
service, and hearts totally given to God
and neighbor. In suffering there is trust.
Walang maipagmamalaki sa Diyos ---
selfless in mission. His service is a crown
he sees not as a prize, but rather an
undeserved gift. St. Paul is a clear
example of someone who is suffering, yet
his prayers still are not be held against his
persecutors, saying, Father, forgive them
for they do not know what they are
doing. Forgiveness becomes the
disposition of the heart.

In the Gospel, we would normally despise
the Pharisee/ separated ones, and we
feel pitiful of the Publican.
Who is a Pharisee? He is not really a
hypocrite. If you read carefully verses 11
and 12, he was actually described as an
upright and honest person. He kept the
laws of God. He avoided sins, and he
even did more than what was required of
him. The law only prescribed fasting once
a year (Lev 16:29), but this Pharisee fasted
twice to atone for the sins of his people
and draw blessings of God on them. He
also gave offerings and tithes. He almost
said to God, There are so many wicked
in the world, but you see, I try to do good
for them instead. Now tell me, how can
you find fault in this man? Yes, probably
he boasted on his honesty, but is that a
serious offense to merit such reaction from
God?
Now let us look at the Publican. He was
not the humble and meek man that we
imagined --- experienced thief, heinous
exploiter, and jackal. He exploited the
poor, by not stealing from the rich. I think
after hearing this, our sympathy will all go
to the Pharisee, and not to the Publican
anymore. We would probably say,
Pwedeng mapatawad ang Pariseo,
bumawi naman kasi. Eh yung Publikano
parang mahirap mapatawad dahil wala
namang sinunod na batas.
According to the law, if he wanted to get
salvation, he must return all he got plus
20% interest, and change his profession
immediately. We might say that yes the
publican may be forgiven, but he cant
simply get away from what he did. Ibalik
muna ang lahat ng ninanakaw niya.
But you see, the conclusion is far different
from what or how we wanted to end the
story. Jesus said the Publican went home
justified while the other did not. Once
again, it is contrary to the first reading,
when we said that God is a just god. How
come the well behaved is condemned,
while the self-confessed sinner is justified?
We have to understand that the master
did not approve of his sins, nor praised the
Publican. He was justified because he
acted rightly in front of God, meaning
wala tayong pwedeng ipagmalaki sa
Diyos, not even our own goodness or our
accomplishments.
There is one thing he had - his sins, his
misery, his interior poverty, his lowliness.
Because of these, he knew very well and
he was even convinced that he deserves
nothing, even salvation, which can only
come from God gratuitously.
While the Pharisee, in suit of his moral
integrity, took a strife before God. And so
we ask, Anong kasananlaan nya? First,
his own merit led him to think for his won
salvation, parang sinasabing,
Panginoon, marami akong ginawang
mabuti sa kapawa at sa iyo, kaya dapat
maligtas ako. Kaya dapat walang
probelma, walang pagsubok. Second,
because of his accomplishment, it led
him to look down to the less holy, less
good than himself. Yes, the Pharisee may
not be wicked, but he is stupid. While the
Publican may not be a perfect example
of a virtuous life, but he is the image of
someone who has a correct attitude in
front of God humble and thinking less of
himself, so that God can still fill up. The
good thing about the Publican is that he
can only offer his broken and contrite
heart to God.
It is also a parable about how we look at
God. The Pharisee, believed that God is
-
-4-
only a record keeper of bad and good
deeds of people, but God is a just god,
who looks up to those who have nothing
to turn to but him alone. The Pharisee
wanted to separate God, na tipong ang
Diyos ay para lang sa mababait,
makatao, masunrunin, at banal --- the
worst kind of separation that can happen
in our lives.
At the last part of the gospel, we are
reminded that anyone who raises himself
will be humbled, and anyone who
humbles himself will be raised up. Lets
learn to be empty handed before God,
poor ones, so that God can fill us up. The
justice of God is not only because he
grants each person what he deserves, but
because he saves the poor and listens to
their cry, the miserable and defenseless.
That is why in the gospel, God was
presented having the same attitude. He is
moved by the Publican who only presents
his miseries and sins.

OCTOBER 13, 2016 INDUCTION OF
NEW AP MEMBERS
It was on the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima,
October 13, 2016, when the Apostles of
Prayer assembled at the Parish grounds,
heading for the National Shrine of the
Sacred Heart in Makati City. On this
Thursday morning, the induction and
consecration of new members of the
Apostleship of Prayer (AP), Archdiocese
of Manila, were held. Msgr. Emmanuel
Sunga, AP-Manila Spiritual Director was
the mass and induction presider.
The Eucharistic celebration started at 9:15
am, followed by the presentation of new
candidates and acceptance,
consecration of the new members,
imposition of the scapulars, and renewal
of consecration by the present members.
Two members of AP SJBP were inducted,
namely Sisters Lydia Orense and Edemia
Ayala.
It was a special day because the National
Shrine was preparing to celebrate the
Feast Day of Saint Margaret Mary
Alacoque on October 16, 2016. Saint
Margaret was the means of spreading
devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
and the Holy Hour. Our Lord appeared
to this Visitation Nun in 1675 and
showed Himself in glory. In his agony in
the Garden, Jesus went to His Apostles
Peter, James and John, to seek a little
consolation from them, but He found
them asleep. He said to them Could
you not then watch one hour with
Me? In memory of this, Jesus asked St.
Margaret Mary to honor the Sacred
Heart by making a Holy Hour before
Him in the Blessed Sacrament. During
the hour, she was to implore Gods
mercy for poor sinners and to sweeten
the bitterness He felt in the Garden of
Olives.
As relayed to St. Margaret Mary, the
desires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are
as follows:
First The Glory of His Father
Second The Honor of His Mother
Third The Salvation of Souls
Fourth The Relief of the Souls in
Purgatory
Fifth Propagation of the Devotion to
His Sacred Heart
Inspired by St. Margaret Mary, the SJBP
Apostles of Prayer, headed by their
President, Sister Rowena Serrano, are all
the more enthusiastic to grant the
desires of the Sacred Heart through
daily activities (leading the Holy Rosary
before mass, receiving Holy
Communion, visiting the Adoration
Chapel, praying the novena for the
dead) and First Friday commitments
(visiting the inmates, attending the First
-
-9-
Friday Mass, and participating in the
Holy Hour).
Let us all hasten to our Saviors desires
through our fervent prayers, daily mass
and communion, and recitation of the
Holy Rosary.

OCTOBER 13, 2016 STREET MASS AT
BEC SALAPAN
Mapagpalang araw po sa lahat! Amin
pong idinaos ang buwanang BEC Street
Mass sa aming barangay noong
nakaraang Oktubre 13, 2016, ganap na
ika-6:00 ng gabi sa Melanio De St.. Ito ay
pinamumuan ng ating resident guest
priest na si Fr. Raul Cuyag.
Sa kanyang mensahe, ipinahayag ni Fr.
Raul na tayo ay dapat matutong
magpasalamat sa Panginoon sa bawat
biyayang Kanyang ibinibigay sa atin.
Ayon daw kay Apostol San Pablo, dahil
sa walang hanggang pagmamahal,
ipinadala ng ating Ama ang kanyang
bugtong na Anak. Ito ay mahalaga na
pagnilayan natin sa ating buhay. Iniwan
ng Diyos ang kaharian sa langit upang
tayoy makapiling, bagamat tayoy mga
makasalanan. Dahil dito, wala tayong
karapatang manghusga sa ating
kapwang nagkasala, at dapat bigyan sila
ng pagkakataon na makapagbagong-
buhay. Sa bandang huli a niya, ang
kabutihan pa rin ang mangingibabaw sa
mundong ito, kayat walang dahilan para
tayoy hindi makapagsimba at
magpasalamat sa Diyos.
Nais po naming pasalamatan aming mga
naging mass sponsors sa araw na iyon,
gayundin ang lahat ng tumulong para
maging maayos ang pagdiriwang ng
banal na misa. Ang susunod na BEC
Street Mass sa Salapan ay gaganapin sa
Nobyembre 10, 2016, 6:00 PM sa J. Dela
Cruz St. God Bless!

MONTHLY MEETING
The second monthly meeting of all
Barangay Servant Leaders (BSLs) of St.
John the Baptist Parish was held last
October 14, 2016, Friday at the office of
Msgr. Nestor Cerbo. The meeting started
at 7:15 PM.
The responsibilities and positions of the
BSLs were given emphasis. Each BEC must
have division of labor thats why theres a
need of having different positions for each
BEC, like the W.E.S.T.Y. leaders, secretary,
treasurer and PRO. The non-participation
of other parish members was talked
about and was noticed as one of the
major problems in the implementation of
BEC in the every barangay. Msgr. Cerbo
will send letter of appeal to all
organizations, ministries and movement

heads for them to support their own
barangay BECs.

formation should be given to members of
SJBP Choir and other youth members who
have not attended BEC seminars yet, in
order for them to be aware of the
importance of BEC. He also asked Sis.
Rubi to lead the proposed BEC council
that will evaluate the BEC condition of
each Barangay. The composition and
purpose of this council is yet to be
discussed on the next meeting. Likewise,
BSL Team Building is still to be scheduled.
Food and drinks were served while having
discussions.
The meeting ended at 9:30 PM with a
closing prayer and blessing from Msgr.

OCTOBER 15, 2016 BEC STREET MASS
AT PASADENA
On October 15, 2016, BEC Pasadena
Street Mass started at 6:00 PM in Barangay
Pasadena Court, with Fr. Raul as presiding
priest. The mass was offered in
celebration of BEC Pasadena Adult Cell
Group (12 years) and BEC Pasadena
Choirs (9 years) anniversaries.
Fr. Rauls homily was about the main
reason on praying or going to mass.
According to him, we must pray not
because we need something, but instead
because we would like to thank God for
everything.
He also said that maybe one of the
reasons why some people dont go to
mass anymore is because they feel that
God is not answering their prayers. Fr. Raul
explained that God always answers our
prayers, but sometimes not as how we
expect or want it to be. God answers our
prayers in order to help us and not to
harm us. Fr Raul said that we must be
persistent in praying, for God will surely
give what we need. Before he ended his
homily, Fr. Raul reminded those present,
that they should continue to invite other
people in the barangay to attend the
monthly street mass.
After the mass, there was a small
celebration held at one of the BEC
members house.

OCTOBER 15, 2016 BEC PROGRESO
STREET MASS
Pasado alas-6:00 ng gabi nang dumating
kami ni Msgr. Nestor Cerbo sa Baranggay
Hall ng Progreso mula sa parokya.
Nabalam kami ng kaunting oras dahil sa
patuloy na pag-ulan, sanhi upang
bumigat ang trapiko sa N.Domingo St.
-
-13-
Msgr. Nestor ang tungkol sa isang
surgeon na lalaki at isang surgeon na
Madre. Ang lalaking surgeon sa madaling
salita, ay di naniniwala sa Diyos. Kung
kaya naman ang madreng surgeon ay
laging nananalangin na sanay bumalik
sa pananampalataya ang lalaking
surgeon. Dumating ang panahon na
nagkaroon ng malubhang sakit ang
lalaking surgeon, at itoy namatay. Nang
malaman ito ng madre, nagtungo ito sa
kinaroroonan ng kanyang bangkay, at
dooy nalaman niyang bago ito
mamatay ay humiling ang ito na
mapagkalooban siya ng banal na
sakramento ng binyag. Nagpasalamat
ang madreng surgeon sapagkat natupad
ang kanyang kahilingan, na sana sa
pamamagitan ng kanyang mga
panalangin ay magbalik-loob ang
kasama niyang surgeon sa
pananampalataya sa Diyos.Ayon kay
Msgr. Nestor, ang aral sa kwentong ito
ay A pagtitiwala at taimtim na
panalangin sa Panginoon ang magiging
katuparan sa ating mga kahilingan.
Natapos po ang misa ng pasado alas-
7:00 ng gabi. Marami din po ang mga
dumalo na kapitbahay, senior citizens,
BEC members, kabataan, at barangay
Personnel.
Nagpapasalamat po kami sa mass
sponsor sa araw na iyon Sis. Elisa
Salayon and Family.Salamat din po kina
Bro. Ronnie Azor at Sis.
misa.
Maraming salamat pong muli kay Msgr.
Nestor Cerbo na naging punong
tagapagdiwang sa misa.

OCTOBER 15, 2016 BEC STREET MASS
AT ISABELITA
The BEC Isabelita street mass held every
3rd Saturday of the month took place
last October 15, 2016 at the Barangay
Hall Day Care Room, in anticipation of
rain. The mass started at 6:30 in the
evening, with Fr. Francis Salcedo as
priest presider. In the Gospel (Lk. 18:1-8),
Jesus tells his disciples about the
necessity of praying always to be
persistent and not become weary of
praying. In his homily Fr. Francis told us
to pray to pray much and to pray
with perseverance because God is
listening, and in His time, He will answer
our prayers. As an example, Fr. Francis
mentioned St. Monica, who prayed for
the conversion of her wayward son
Augustine. She prayed persistently &
patiently for about 30 years before
-
-14-
Augustine had a change of heart and
turned to the Lord. Augustine eventually
became a Saint.
The Lord tells us to pray always with
perseverance, and without tiring.
Though prayers are sometimes not
answered the way we hope them to be,
it is because the prayer might not be
good for us, or maybe God has another
plan for us. We should not lose heart but
wait and continue praying because
God will give us something much better
than the one we are praying for.
The street mass was held in cooperation
of the BEC Isabelita Core Group,
headed by BSL Naning Dela Pea, and
the Isabelita Barangay Council headed
by Barangay Chairman Edgar Corre.
We praise God that BSL Naning Dela
Pea had already recovered from his
foot injury and was able to attend the
mass. Welcome back, Bro. Naning!

OCTOBER 16, 2016 CHILDRENS
CATECHESIS AT BEC SALAPAN
Muli po naming isinagawa ang Childrens
Catechesis sa aming BEC noong Oktubre
16, 2016, 4:30 ng hapon sa aming chapel.
Ito po ay pinamunuan ng ating SJBP
Volunteer Catechist na si Sis. Malou
-
-17-
sa Araw-Araw. Ito ay mga biyayang
hindi materyal tulad ng biyaya ng
kasiyahan at kapayapaan; at pusong
mapagpatawad, mapagmahal at
mapagpakumbaba.
Ibinahagi din ni Sis. Malou kung paano
manalangin.
Malou
sa panahong ibinahagi niya para
mabigyan ng dagdag na kaalaman ang
mga bata. Nagpapasalamat din kami sa
nag-sponsor ng merienda sa hapong
iyon.
Ang susunod po na Childrens Catechesis
sa aming BEC ay sa Nobyembre 6, 2016,
4:30 ng hapon sa Our Lady of the
Assumption Chapel.

OCTOBER 16, 2016 SUNDAY YOUTH
MASS
Ginanap muli noong ika-16 ng Oktubre
2016, 6:00 P.M. ang lingguhang Misa
para sa mga Kabataan sa SJBP. Ang
banal na misa ay pinangunahan ng
priest-in-charge for the Youth, at kura
paroko na si Rev. Msgr. Nestor C. Cerbo.
Ang banal na misa para sa mga
kabataan ay sinimulan sa isang
pambungad na awit kasabay ang
pagsayaw ng ating mga SJBP Youth
Animators at ang pagprusisyon ng mga
ceriales, kasama ang punong
tagapagdiwang.
-
-18-
Sa homiliya ni Msgr. Nestor ay
ipinaliwanag niya na hindi tayo dapat
sumusuko sa ating mga panalangin.
Dagdag pa niya,Kapag may tiyaga,
may biyaya. Ang laging nagdadasal
ay palaging panalo at hindi talo.
Bago pa man matapos ang misa, nag-roll
call si Msgr. Nestor sa mga kabataan
ayon sa kanilang mga kinabibilangang
BEC/Barangay. Muli ay hinikayat niya ang
mga ito na magsimba tuwing Linggo ng
6:00 PM para sa Youth Mass.
Natapos ang banal na misa sa isang
pangwakas na awitin na muling
sinabayan ng pagsayaw ng ating SJBP
Youth Animators. Gayundin, nagkaroon
Magkita-
kita po sana tayong mga kabataan sa
parokya ng San Juan Bautista!
OCTOBER 17, 2016 VICARIATE
CARITAS PREVENTIVE HEALTH CENTER
CELEBRATES ITS 10TH YEAR
ANNIVERSARY
The celebration of the 10th Anniversary of
the Vicariate Caritas Preventive Health
Center was held last October 17, 2016 at
St. Martin de Porres Charity Hospital.
It started with a thanksgiving mass at the
hospital chapel at 9:00 AM, presided by
Rev. Fr. Jesus C. Prol, OP, Parish Priest of
Santuario del Sto. Cristo.
After the mass, invited guests and
volunteers proceeded to the Hospital
Conference Room wherein a short
program and sumptuous merienda for the
said occasion was held. We were so
happy and grateful for the presence of
our two (2) volunteer doctors, Dra. Estrella
Go Co and Dra. Lourdes Villanueva, who
also delivered a short inspirational
message for all of us.
Before the program ended, PSSDM-SJBP
Volunteers rendered a song We are
made for Service dedicated to all of us
volunteers who are giving our 3Ts (time,
talent, treasure) in order to help our
needy brothers and sisters in Christ,
through the support of Caritas programs
and respective parishes under our
Vicariate of St. John the Baptist.
We thank God for this one decade of
existence in giving medical services to
our indigent urban family partners and we
look forward for more years to come in
Gods Holy Will.

OCTOBER 19, 2016 PAGPAPADAMA
NG AWA: CWL HOLDS FEEDING
ACTIVITY FOR KIDS The CWL SJBP Unit sponsored a Feeding
Activity last Wednesday, October 19, 2016,
12 noon at the Parish Celebration
Hall (kindly check if time and venue is
correct). This is in response to our parish
theme this year, PAGPAPADAMA NG AWA
PAKAININ ANG MGA NAGUGUTOM.
At the start of the activity, Msgr. Nestor
Cerbo welcomed the children and
encouraged their parents, grandparents and
guardians to teach them how to pray. They
were also informed that their children may
join the Childrens Mass every Sunday at
4:00 PM. At their age, it is important that they
are being oriented to participate in spiritual
activities.
A total of 74 children from the different BECs
Batis, Corazon de Jesus, St. Joseph, Rivera,
Pedro Cruz, San Perfecto, Salapan and
Tibagan enjoyed the packed lunch, which
consists of rice, chicken teriyaki and pancit
canton.
Once again the officers and members of the
CWL SJBP Unit would like to thank our donors
and sponsors for this outreach activity. It is only
through your continuous support that we were
able to help children who needed help the
most. May God bless us all!

OCTOBER 19, 2016 BEC CORE
GROUP MEETING The BEC Core Group Meeting was held
again last Wednesday, October 19, 2016,
7:00 PM at the 2nd Floor of the Parish
Formation Center. The group gladly
welcomed back Bro. Rene Reyes, BSL of BEC
Pedro Cruz, who has just recuperated from
his heart attack last September; and our
beloved Parochial Vicar, Fr. Herbert
Camacho, who was away for sometime due
to his overseas mission and pilgrimage in
Rome. Bro. Naning Dela Pea, BSL of BEC
Isabelita led the prayers of adoration and
contrition, which was followed by the
reading of the gospel for the 30th Sunday in
Ordinary Time.
Before Fr. Herbert gave his exegesis of the
gospel, he briefly shared first his realizations
for the past couple of weeks that he had
been away for his pilgrimage, which also fell
in time for the celebration of his 5th year
anniversary as a priest. According to Fr.
Herbert, he realized that he is still a priest,
not just because of Gods fidelity, but also
because of the people/flock whom God has
entrusted to him the same people who
continues to pray for him. Remembering this,
he made sure that he brought everyones
intention to every sacred place and tomb
he visited, as his little way of paying
gratitude to all the people whom he shares
his priesthood with.
Moving on to his Gospel Reflection, Fr.
Herbert discussed about the proper
disposition and sincerity of our prayer life. A
complete copy of the reflection is published
in Ang Tinig.
After the reflection and sharing of
experiences, Msgr. Nestor discussed the
business matters. Among the highlights
were:
