In the heart of the River Market of Kansas City, MO lies a 184,000 sft parking lot, and our site. The site is located south of adjacent greenspace. The plan needed to be open/transparent to bridge the greenspace and the site. Suspended above the open ground plan, the mezzanine supports all of the program that isn’t related to the consumption and brewing of beer. The elaborate, industrial structure is indicative of the rich railroad history of the River Market District. Typology is critical in the River Market, so the glorified shed/barn motif compliments the context.

TYPOLOGY VENTILATION SYSTEMS MASS/VOIDSUSPENSIONLIGHTbarn, long span structure with hung support suitable for a beer hall and program.

lifting up the skin emphasizes the hung nature of the project and allows for cross-ventilation.

air distrubution systems are suspended within the trusses.

exterior elements open and close the facade to inform the interior.

support spaces are suspended from the trusses, completely freeing up the beer hall.

carving away to allow for an even, natural light distrubution.

SUSPENSION MEZZANINEThe support spaces are suspended over the beer hall and brewing spaces. This allows for a completely open plan.

The trusses span the width of the site, support the mezzanine, anchor the skin and create clerestories for ventilation and natural light.

SUSPENSION DETAILSThe bar is suspended from the trusses and anchored into the ground. This detail further alludes to the light and delicate nature of the space. Likewise, the mezzanine and horizontal surfaces on the mezzanine are suspended, creating continuity throughout the entire project.

TIMBER IN THE CITYred hook, brooklyn NYyear 3

The Timber in the City project is sited on the southwestern tip of Red Hook Brooklyn, in the epicenter of hurricane Sandy. With this in mind, I found it necessary to design for the future of Red Hook, as well as design affordably and sustainably. Programmatically, the project is to house a wood manufacturing plant, a digital fabrication plant, a bike shop, a bike-share shop, and over 150 living units. This live/work situation would pay homage the epicenter of Sandy, as well as informed the shape of the building. The form of the building is radial to capture the views out towards the NYC skyline, the statue of liberty, and the Red Hook community. The shape inflects towards the community at a business level and gestures towards the greater context at an apartment level.

WORK LIVE

POST TENSION PRE-FAB UNITSNATURAL VENTILATION GREEN SPACE

Oversized apetures gesture out into the community. This creates a street presence and provides tenant space.

Being a glorified atrium building, the layout lends itself to natural ventilation.

Pre-fab units radiate out to inflect towards the city. This move also creates more surface area for windows.

Roof-top garden space provides green space for the resi-dents as well as pulls the essence of the park in.

The pre-fab apartment units will stack on top of each other, then be fastened in place using a post-ten-sioning structural system. This system sandwiches the corridoor and holds everything in place once the units are stacked.

The Kansas State Women’s Boathouse is sited in the Tuttle Creek Reservoir. Carved into the steep terrain, the design anchors the building into the site and creates a complement with the site. Concrete service bars bookend the open public space. A light, tectonic roof structure unifies all of the spaces. The project is heavy and grounded signifying a permanent nature. “We will not be moved, we will not be defeated” is represented here to allude to the athletic and competitive essence of the collegiate sport.

The heavy nature of the concrete service bars ground the project. The tectonic nature of the structure contrasts the base and unifies the building and site.

CONSTRUCTION AXON

A cat walk connects the two “team” bars, allowing athletes to circulate independently from the public while occupying the same space. I further developed the project during the summer of 2014. I constructed a 3-D model and computer rendered it. The accompanying hand-drafted drawings are from the original Bowman Forum competition, which I placed 1st.

The town of Alma, Kansas, population 800 people, is located in the heart of the dwindling Tallgrass Prairie. The town itself is centered around Missouri Street and one block to the east is the public park + pool. Alma is characterized by its small town, Midwest feel. Limestone cut from locally regional places is prominent throughout the town and is to be incorporated in our designs, along with other features. Alma’s history is important, along with the present and future of the town. That is why throughout the 2014-2015 school year we are working to improve the public park + pool of the town. The goal is to enrich and improve small-town mid-west urbanscapes. Our pool designs are looking at the present as well as 20 years into the future.

The original scope of work pertained to only the pool area. Community members were explicit with their needs, such as: more seating, shade, and accessibility within the pool. However, the studio observed that the park had many of the same problems as the pool. When the studio visited Alma for the first time, we noticed that major key elements of a good park were missing. The entire park was poorly organized. There were no edge defining elements and the park just seemed very peace meal. The studio concluded that in order to fix the bigger picture at hand, the park as a whole had to be addressed. The project is broken up into a series of phases with $10,000 allotted for phase one.

SPILLMAN FARMER ARCHITECTSFor the first two months of my internship, I fabricated and constructed a detailed section model of the new Easton City Hall in Easton, PA. This section through the building portrayed every design facet of the project from the interior to the exterior. Joe Biondo, my mentor, used this model to portray his keen design ideas. The shingled relief on the walls pays homage to the native American history of the site. Materials and structure are exploited in the project, so every detail of the model was carefully designed. Spillman Farmer Architects donated services to the city of Easton in Pennsylvania for the design and construction of a fountain. I developed, designed and drafted all of the deliverables for the project. I conducted meetings with the park committee and presented the project in town hall meetings. We carried the project through to documentation and the installation of the fountain. My internship ended before I could see the final phase complete. The fountain is positioned in the exact location where a historically significant fountain once laid. The design radiates out, engaging the site and alluding to a reunion of old and new. Low seating walls provide light and significant literature. The pavers are recycled clinker bricks and sections of the seating walls are re-purposed foundation rocks from the historic fountain.
