Over one week ago, 11-year old Phillip was living on the war-ridden is-land of Curacao. To escape the war, His mother and him set off to on a Cramped boat in the hope of finding safety. However, the Germans viciously torpedoed them while on the ship. Phillip woke up to find himself on an emer-gency raft with an old black man named Timothy. They were drifting along the Caribbean Sea with nothing in sight.

After sailing for days, they came upon a small cay and island known as the devils mouth. When he heard the news, Phillip dived off the raft in excitement.

However, he later be-came skeptical when he heard it was a cay- no ships or boats can come near the island to rescue them because of the low bank of sand and coral. A dire situ-ation faces the two of them. We talk now with

Phillip about the challenges of the fierce survival of Timothy and himself.

The InterviewRecently, Timothy suspected the cat provide context-where is this from? of being a voodoo devil. He then attempt-ed to kill him. How do you feel about this?He is crazy. My initial thought was that I was stuck on an island with a mad man. I began to think about leaving the island on the raft, but he cut it loose. I thought that if he would harm the cat, he would harm me.

Right off the bat, Timothy has left you alone on the island many times to go fetch things like water and fish. Being blind after the ship wreak Phillip, does this scare you? Yes. The first few times I was terrified. But then he fashioned me a cane and a guide rope. After a few spins around the island I felt very comfortable navi-gating around by me self.

How did you feel when Timothy told you that there was a cay around the island and no ships can come near the Shore to rescue You?

I wanted to leave the island A.S.A.P. If no boats could come near the island the chances of us being saved were almost depleted. Airplanes could still pass by but our greatest chance of being saved was by a boat. Timothy ended up convincing me it was best to stay on the island.

Recently, you and Timothy had been engaged in an argument after arriving at the island. What was this about? He was being a jerk that day. He wanted me to help set up the camp and weave the mats. I was very frustrated with because I could not see what I was doing. I yelled at him. I enraged him. He struck me across the face and I tumbled to the ground. There wasn’t much talking after that.

After a dry week on the island, what was your first reaction when the rain hit?My first reaction was to run outside of the hut and feel the rain on my dry skin. It felt staggering. It replenished my strength.

Everytime I look at you I go blindEverytime I look at you I go blind

In the morning I get upAnd I try to feel alive but I can’t

I don’t know what it isSomething in me just won’t give it a chance

I think it’s just that I feel more confused by the dealLove has shown me

Little child did you know that there’s lightAnd it’s gonna shine right through your eyes

What do you think that life is like

Everytime I look at you I go blindSomewhere over there

There’s a purpose there’s a care for freeIn me there’s nobody

No one plan no one stand to be free

I think it’s that because I have seen all the fussAnd it’s no big deal

Hold me hold me‘Cause I wanna get high and higher

Why would you want to keep going if it seems there is no hope and noth-ing will get bet-ter? I Go Blind is a commentary on how there is good in a bad situation even though it may not be apparent. However, It also means that it is difficult to find the light in the dark-ness. Later in the song he says, “and I try to feel alive but I can’t.” This lyric in the song means that he is trying to feel positive but he can’t. The author demonstrates this

though the use of Hyperbole, “And it’s gonna shine right though your eyes.” Here, The author is trying to say that the Bright side is going to come.

How does this song relate to any sort of conbition? This song relates to the novel The Cay be-cause in the novel the boy Phillip goes blind and it seems as if there is no hope for him. At the same time, Timothy keeps searching in the light in the dire situation they are in. Phillip finds it

quite strenuous to search for the light but Timothy keeps educating him to find the good situ-ation. At the end of the book Phillip eventually finds the light in there dark-ness. The lyric in the song, “Cause I wanna get higher and higher” ex-plains what it feels like to finally find the light in the bad situation. You are just so relieved when you find the light.

Classified “The Cay” novel sold over 4 million copies world wide, was banned for a short period of time because it was classified as racist. In the book, the young white boy conquered his racist views after being stranded on an island with an old black man for over a year. This novel by Theodore Taylor should be included in the grade 8 curriculum because there is a valuable theme and message that young adults should know. It is also has a different view from the narrator, he is blind. The events in the novel very un predictable making it very interesting to read. One of the reasons why “The Cay” should be included in the grade 8 curriculum is because it has a valuable message in the theme. That mes sage is to not make negative assump tions about someone who is

different than you. It very important for all people to learn at a young age to not dis-criminate. “So I spent a lot of time along St. Anna Bay, at the market talking to the black people. I felt close to them.” This is a quote from the book that was said by Timothy. Quelling his racist views from the beginning of the book, he has come a long way and this quote proves it.

Another reason why this book is should be red by 8 graders is because the narrator tells the story from a dramatically different point of view. Since the narrator is blind, the story is described in only touch, smell and sound making it very interesting. This demonstrates a different style of writing for 8th graders to absorb. Imagining most of the imagery in the novel is quite diffi-cult which also forces the reader to create their own vision of the setting.

Naturally, the events in this book are un-predictable making it fearfully addicting. The unpredictable events in this novel is one of the key reasons why this book should be included in the grade 8 jour-ney. This adds another aspect to the book which makes it more interesting and is an exemplar to the students of how to make a novel more interesting.

I put hand in front of my face. Even in the very blackest night, you can see your own hand. But i could not see mine. I screamed to Timothy, ‘I’m blind, I’m blind!’” This is an example of an unpre-dictable event that takes place in the book. Isn’t that more interesting than some old predicable event that every-one saw coming.

The unpredictable events in The Cay make the novel addicting to read and is one of the reasons why it should be included in the grade curriculum. It also has a valuable message and theme. The different perspective of the narra-tor being blind makes it one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read. 4 mil-lion copies sold world wide speaks for its self.
