ANDREW JACKSON

7th President of the United States

As a teenager, he was captured by the British when he joined a local militia during the American Revolutionary war.

He grew to later become a general during the War of 1812. He defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans.

He and Isaac Shelby helped negotiate the purchase of a large portion of land from the Chickasaw tribe of Native Americans.

The land was south of the Ohio river, east of the Mississippi river, and west of the Tennessee river. It became known as Jackson’s Purchase.

He was elected to the office of President of the United States during the election of 1828 and took office in 1829.

Andrew Jackson did not leave policy making to Congress. He used his veto power and leadership to assume command.

He fought against the renewal of the charter of the 2nd Bank of the United States claiming it was a government funded monopoly.

After his presidency, he retired and lived out his life at The Hermitage, his home in Tennessee.
