Frances Coverdale, former BBCbroadcast journalist and chair of theRichmond and Kingston CHASESupport Group, has recentlycompleted the Red Face Stories book- a collection of anecdotes aboutthings children and adults have saidor done to embarrass each other.

The book has been funded by Tina Aston who works at CHASE head office andwhose eight year old son Matthew was the first child to die at Christopher’s. Theintroductory page features a poem written by Matthew. Tina decided to pay forthe publication of this book from the Matthew Aston Memorial Fund. FOUNTAIN FEATURE FOR CHASE•CHASE head office now has its very own fountain feature thanks to three former Merrist Woodstudents, Chris Dawes, Liam Buxton and Tom Hales.

The three lads were responsible for a huge part of the construction work of the CHASE/MerristWood Journey of the Senses Garden at Hampton Court Flower Show last year, designed by JoWard-Ellison and Janette Dollamore, which won a Bronze medal.

Once the show was over, the garden had to be dismantled but Chris, Liam and Tom offered toreconstruct it at CHASE. It was only practical to re-build part of the garden and the fountain featurewas the obvious choice. They set to work using materials from the Hampton Court Palace Gardenand their labour was free of charge!

The fountain is now fully operational - using recycled water of course – and the lads came alongrecently to perform the official switch on.

They said they had been delighted to help CHASE and staff at head office are pleased to have sucha cooling feature in their office garden!

Chris comes from Godalming and Liam and Tom are from Guildford. They have gone on to build their own businesses - Chris as CD Landscapes (www.cdlandscapeservices.co.uk - 07815 705873) and Liam and Tom work together in their own business as well, called Stone Circle Landscapes(www.stonecirclelandscapes.co.uk - 07795 466 951 or 07812 061 303). The lovely white stones forthe fountain were kindly donated by Greg Skillbeck of Silverland Stone.

BIG BLISTERS FOR EXTREME FEAT!There really are no lengths to what CHASEsupporters will do to help us with our fundraising. The latest idea is a real example of Englishsporting eccentricity.

Two otherwise entirely sane, respectable guys -Phil Stapleton, a 33 year old schoolteacher (fromCharterhouse School in Godalming), and NickGibbins, a 32 year old surgeon, are planning tospend much of the next 18 months training for, andthen running, four of the most extreme marathonsin the world in a single year:- the highest (atEverest Base Camp), the lowest (by the Dead Sea),the coldest (at the North Pole) and one of thehottest - (the Marathon des Sables); in fact 243kms over six days through the Sahara Desert.

This challenge, which is believed to be the first ever attempt at these four marathons in oneyear, has been christened “Extreme Feat”, for good reason!

The bookings have been made and training is underway. The first event is early next year. Theteam is currently looking for relevant corporate sponsorship in chunks of £1,000 to £25,000.

Any ideas or good contacts with sports companies/ health brands or travel/airlines, please letCatherine Loveless know at CHASE Head Office or contact the team direct [email protected]. We will follow their progress in PaperCHASE both in theirchallenge and at related fundraising events that will take place over the next 18 months.

The government has agreed to provide £9 million ayear for three years which will be shared betweenthe children’s hospice services in England.

However the government has yet to announceexactly how it intends to divide and administer these funds.

While this is welcome it will form only a smallpercentage of the £3.2 million CHASE has to raiseeach year.

CHASE BEREAVED PARENTS GROUP•

CHASE now has a Bereaved Parents group which was set up to providebereaved parents known to CHASE with an opportunity to meet other bereavedparents in a welcoming and mutually supportive environment. The group wasintended to provide them with the opportunity to share their experiences, learnfrom each other and thus, enable them to cope with their own grief.

The group was organised by Heather Tilley, CHASE Family Support andBereavement Counsellor; Jane Day, CHASE Deputy Community Team Leaderand Lynne Forrester, who is Learning & Development Facilitator at CHASE.

A total of 14 bereaved parents attended the group, which was held weekly forseven weeks - and each week explored a specific topic although theconversation often covered a range of issues experienced by the parents.Topics included telling the story of their child, memories, the impact of thebereavement on relationships, how to support their other children, coping withanniversaries, what to do with possessions, the future and facing Christmas.

Despite some initial anxieties about joining a group, everyone soon becamefriendly and very quickly there was a sense of cohesion and mutual supportwithin the group.

Those who had attended had clearly found it a positive experience andHeather was urged to continue these groups into the future - another groupwill be held in November this year.

Parents also agreed to continue to get together on a more social basis andare now meeting regularly.

Cricket and skittles! The fifth year of cricket and skittles between two pubs in Horley Surrey, The Farmhouse and TheBull, were once again a great success. Surrey and England players Martin Bicknell and MarkButcher went along to the six a side match in The Farmhouse pub garden and The Farmhousewon the match by 80 runs!

The Martin Summers Man Of The Match Award was won by Paul Griffiths of The Farmhouse.

The skittles match at The Bull in August was going well until the rain set in, so a no-win-draw wasagreed and everyone retreated indoors for the raffle and auction which raised a lot of money -and thanks go to the many local and national businesses who supported the events.

Funds raised from both events were a record £6,000, the most ever raised over the five yearsthese events have been staged.

Proceeds from thisyear’s production are being donated to CHASE and some children and their families supported by CHASE went along tothe matinee performance and had a wonderful time.
