The saturated colors in the Southwestern landscape allow the landforms to shine through. There is a sense ofmovement here, of sun moving across the land, and the sight and sound of wind coming in and out of differentlandscape elements.

Experiencing the Great Smoky Mountains with a crowd at sunset is to experience grandeur and pride of the southalive in dreams and present in vistas like this. Bordering commercial tourist towns present a stark contrast, withthe ability of the Smoky Mountains National Park to quickly cut you off from the surrounding attractions andprovide serenity. This paradox can be seen across the country, of people being attracted to natural landscapeelements, and then submitting to over-consumption in adjacent tourist towns.

The stark land of the Southwest, seemingly not meant for large numbers of people to live, emphasizes theimportance of community and provides open visibility with contrasts of being so vast as to be sutble.

Location: Zuni Indian Reservation, Zuni, New MexicoPosition: Program Facilitator with the Zuni Youth Enrichment ProjectTime Period: June 2014-January 2015Description of Work: I led and developed programs in mental and physical wellness, outdoor survival skills, the arts, and career development in natural resource management with local agencies, universities, healthcare professionals, and other local and national non-profits. These programs laid groundwork for multiple currently active grants, including a substantial grant to develop the local food system and build a food co-op, as well as a $3 Million ArtPlace America grant to extend the influence of artistic and cultural activities in ZYEP programming. More information on the ZYEP and these projects may be found here: www.zyep.org. I took the following photos of Zuni.

Course: Macalester College GEOG 225, Intro to Geographic Information SystemsSemester: Spring 2009Project Description: For my final project, I created analytical maps of Methamphetamine trafficking in Tennessee. These graphs enabled me to determine trends in major trafficking routes, and analyze locations of lab seizures in relation to locations of arrests for possession. This is a map from the final presentation, created in ArcGIS.
