This revitalization plan proposes that to capture the potential of Ensley it is strategically important to change the impressions that are created and maintained about the community. Many of these impres-sions are formed along 20th Street. Twentieth Street is a de-facto “bypass” in Ensley. Hundreds of vehicles a day come and go along this corridor, but even fast- food restaurants have failed to thrive. Gas stations and discount stores are the only evidence of commerce and the strongest impression along this route is of disinvestment. Changing this impression could create a tipping point for a new sense of possibility in a part of Birmingham that has some of the best stock of vacant and under-utilized properties.

The Athletic Club is a health, recre-ational, and social facility geared towards exercise, sports, and other physical activities. A successful facility will accommodate both, the serious athlete, and the casual recreational user. Activities include organized, group instructional pro-grams such as spinning classes, yoga, martial arts and individual fitness opportunities such as car-diovascular training, weight training, and swimming. Individual activities may be self guided or conducted under the supervision of a trainer. The social component is an impor-tant secondary function of the Athletic Club, and is represented by elements that support the fitness goals, but also encourage social interaction. These include a juice bar and sport spectator seating.

The Childrens Hospital of Boston was designed to efficiently address the demanding functions of a hospital. Being in an urban environment, this hospital main-tains the urban edge seen in surrounding buildings. The plinth occupies most of the buildable area in order to effectively fit all the medical operations and ser-vices a hospital requires. This allows the building to have fewer floors reducing building costs. Additionally this concept will allow the hospital to fit symbiotically-into the residential neighborhood. The design and placement of the family lounges on the patient floors help break up foot traffic while focusing views towards the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway and the Beacon Hill Bridge

Bessemer, Alabama

The courthouse for Bessemer, Alabama is focused toward con-temporary, post-modern design while maintaining classical court-house ideals. As a courthouse it is designed to be an icon of the city. By successfuly utilizing symmetry and a distinctive ordered bay system it contrib-utes to the existing urban con-text. This allows for long views from the interior circulation and great approach angles from the exterior. We embraced Bessemer’s history for material selection, which includes a com-bination of limestone and steel which gives tribute to the city’s industrial past.

Redesign a facade that captures light on an exsisting building in the lower west side of Manhat-tan in New York City

Program:

Intention:To design a shutter system that will play a key role in the facade of the building as well as collect and manage natural light. The aluminum shutters help frame views of The Highline area and designate public and private spaces through the various sized perferations This shutter system uses a series of vertical slats that allow each shutter to inde-pendently roll up as much as 70 degrees allowing for an ever-changing facade.
