• In 1942 Ms. Guelen was working as a school teacher in Brussels at the age of 20, when the Gestapo arrived to arrest some of her Jewish students. After she decided to take part in a Jewish rescue organization called Comité de Défense des Juifs.

WHAT SHE DID

• For more than 2 years she moved Jewish children to live with Christian families. She would still visit them and care for there needs after they were moved. Guelen saved 300 Jewish children by the end of the war.

• She kept secret records of the children she helped. Guelen found their true identities, and after the war she tried to reunite the children who survived with their parents.

AWARDS

• In 1989 Guelen was recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations. On April 18, 2007 she was awarded honorary Israeli citizenship at a ceremony at Yad Vashem. The ceremony was a part of the Children Hidden in Belgium During the Shoah International Conference. Guelen receiving the Israeli

citizenship award.
