Palazzina Apartment Site: Via Flaminia, Rome, Italy The problem defined the key elements of the palazzina building typology and re-interpreted them into a new set of elements which were then inserted as a new form into the site. Design Studio 302, 1997

A Piazza. Site: Portico D'Ottavia, Rome, Italy. The piazza creates a pedestrian space connecting the ancient ruins to the current street level. The site at the time of design was an abandoned excavation; a large, dangerous hole in the road. Since then, the city has rebuilt the road and reconnected the Teatro Marcello and the Jewish Ghetto.Cornell-in-Rome Design Studio 402, 1997

Analysis Toy. Six chronologically different maps of Rome were transferred onto the sides of the blocks. The blocks could then be removed and replaced to create variations of Rome spanning distant time stratifications. Cornell-in-RomeDesign Studio 402, 1997

Alternative program for the Millennium Dome, London, England The program replicated the dome at successively smaller scales. After the visitor found the center, she deposited an artifact in the suspended time capsule. Once the capsule reached the critical weight, the fabric of the dome would close-in on the time capsule and seal it. The structure of the dome could then be recycled and the site redeveloped. A thesis by Andrea Gaffney presented 11 May 1999 in 142 Sibley Hall to advisor Laura Briggs and other critics.

ONCE THERE WAS A BARN,a barn on a broken block.A barn where one day, light silently snuck in disguised as shadow, and began to draw-up plans for re-inhabitation.As light made plans, shadow quietly began collecting the boardsfrom the walls, packing them in boxes to be moved.Soon after, light (disguised as shadow) discovered shadow’s trick—shadow had turned himself into light, leaving the darknessas the only space for the light.Light and shadow now existed in opposite places.Time passed . . . they realized they were unable to existwithout one another and agreed upon a reconciliation.Light and shadow cautiously approached one another, and met at the thicknessof spacethat existsin memoryand, together they revealed a placein situ.

stage toy: opening is an action of site inversion

Driving down Seneca street, there are two lanes heading one way: west. Crossing between Geneva and Albany streets on a weekend afternoon, one may glance at the middle of the block on the left-hand side and notice a quiet, vacant-looking building. At 30 mph, the east and north facades of 110.5 N.Geneva street are flattened like that of a stage set that wants to create depth with a single plane of wood. The exterior of the building looks like a typical house of late 19th century Ithaca—standard A-frame, a chimney extending out from a sloping roof, framed plywood doorway, a double-hung window…

the plan of the installation

The stage is theological for as long as its structure, following the entirety of tradition, comports the following elements: an author-creator who, absent and from afar, is armed with a text and keeps watch over, assembles, regulates the time or the meaning of representation, letting the latter represent her as concerns what is called the content of her thoughts, her inten-tions, her ideas. She lets representation represent her through representatives, directors or actors, enslaved interpreters who represent characters who, primarily through what they say, more or less directly represent the thought of the “creator.”1

Responsibilities included: measuring existing space, entering measurements into AutoCAD, schematic design, product research, and attending client meetings. At the time of this project, Michael Oppenheimer was the Chief Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and as a result, requested that all materials used in the renovation be "environmentally-friendly." It was my responsibility to research, locate, and price all of the possible options.

Rotary Club Group Study Exchange Participant, Santa Catarina, Brazil, 2002. A group of four young professionals travelled around the state with a Rotarian for the month of April. Each participant visited businesses and agencies that related to his or her career field. I visited several construction sites, spoke with several architects, met with the historical commission of one town and the urban planning department of another city. The photos above and to the right show typical construction techniques and eventual failure due to rust. Below left is an example of natural barbed wire, and below is city subsidized low-income housing in Florianopolis.

The Design Center staff was able to further assist the community by advising on a park design that had been funded through a Community Development Block Grant. We suggested that it accomodate not only active recreation, but passive reacreation as well. By adding the passive recreation, the park could be extended, in the future, to include a reading area for the library to the east and serve as a connector to the main street in the south. We also modified the design so that it minimized the number of trees required for removal; the trees were identified by the community as the most attractive aspect of the area. Edgehill Neighborhood Study, Nashville Civic Design Center, 2002 - 2003

As part of the Nashville Civic Design Center's community outreach program, the staff worked with the Edgehill community from September 2002 through October 2003 to formulate a comprehensive vision plan for the neighborhood.

The Plan of Nashville is a community-based design initiative striving to create a vision plan for downtown Nashville and its surrounding neighborhoods. Since 1950 more than ninety plans have been proposed for various parts of Nashville; this is the first effort to consider the central city in its entirety. Conceptually based on the Commercial Club’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, the Plan of Nashville publication will set forth a vision plan and statement with community goals and design principles which will serve as a litmus test for current and future development. The Nashville Civic Design Center seeks to perpetuate community participation in the design process through continued public awareness and understanding of the surrounding environment by documenting the vision plan and its process, and making it available to everyone in the form of a book; date of publication: January 2005. NCDC continues to lead the community through the LIVING THE PLAN initiative, which has pushed forward several major ideas from the Plan into the strategic planning arena. Competition submission for: LIVING SMART: A Competition for Narrow Lot House Designs of Excellence, Portland, OR 2004PDX1: A Tower in the GardenTower Power: A centralized plumbing wall affords efficiency in construction. Solar panels provide energy assistance to an open-direct radiant heating system. The radiant heat and natural ventilation, in combination with the thermally stabilizing green roofs, provide a low energy solution for controlled environments.Reusable Walls: As an incentive for construction, the city assembles a set of reclaimed wood formwork, which serve as the exposed foundation walls. The city provides the formwork to contractors for a deposit fee, which reduces the cost of construction. The characteristics of the board castings offer an element of design typically found only in custom design. In addition to the environmental benefits of reusing the wood, the formwork itself is a type of recyclable. Negotiate the Garage: Offering the same functions as a garage, a recessed carport allows for visual access along the entire street frontage of the house. The notion of minimal displacement played a role in the location of the carport. Respond to Context: The design makes numerous moves to connect with the context, but materiality is a major contributor in acceptance. The idea is to evaluate surrounding materials and markets and work within that palette.
