FRIENDS OF THE BRAY The Friends of the Bray is a group of our closest supporters who believe in the Bray, understand its value and act on their belief with an annual gift of $1,000 or more in support of general operations.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Every year at the Bray, we find that there are certain constants: we discover new creative voices and watch as others are renewed; we spend time with old friends and meet new ones; and we always encounter a few surprises along the way…

One of 2013’s chief surprises came in

the form of the results of a study of the Bray’s impact on the economy of Helena. Funded by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and conducted by the University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the economic impact study revealed some unexpected results.

When combined with that of the Clay Business, the Archie Bray Foundation’s annual operating budget just surpasses the $1M mark. The economic impact study, however, shows that the Bray’s operations contribute $2.8M to the Helena economy in a normal year, and as much as $4.1M in a year when we host an anniversary event.

Artists, students and cultural tourists come to the Bray from as near as Helena and as far away as Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean. And they have a tangible economic impact that is almost three times the actual operating budget of the Bray itself! The magnitude of this impact speaks directly to the need for the Bray’s services among the ceramics community and to the Bray’s ability in meeting those needs, keeping pace with the speed of technology and innovation.

I mention all this here in our annual Honor Roll for a simple reason: whether we’re talking about economic impact or the newest work being done by our residents, there’s one thing at the very heart of the Bray…YOU. Thanks to your support, each year dozens of ceramic artists of all ages and backgrounds and from around the world find the space, opportunity and community they need for their creative (and professional) growth as artists.

“After 45 years of working in clay, I have come to the conclusion that an artist must remain a student, always. The true artist creates each new piece as an attempt to make something better than anything that preceded it. But growth requires the nourishment of new directions in both concept and technique…a workshop at the Bray offers one of the best venues for advancing one’s art.” —Richard Notkin

“For me, the best thing about the Bray is the people, hands down. It’s the residents, the visiting and guest artists, the community and the staff…that alone is well worth being here. They are a great knowledge base and resource. To be able to walk down the hall and see these artists working, to get to know them, work alongside them, learn from them, build a rapport and a friendship is amazing.”

—Adam Field,

2013 Speyer Fellow

At the Archie Bray, the idea of “community” is firmly grounded in a passion for clay and ceramics, or more specifically, its root is in the experience of ceramics. The community connects to the Bray in many ways, including through volunteering, philanthropic giving, classes and workshops, residencies and social media.

At the Archie Bray, learning to work with clay involves a lot more than watching demos or listening to slide lectures. Whether someone is touching clay for the first time or looking for innovative techniques as a full-time studio artist, growth as an artist requires instruction, but it also requires opportunities to explore and experiment with the support and encouragement of a community of other passionate artists.

Learning isn’t confined to the classroom at the Bray. Each year, hundreds of visitors to the Bray’s grounds, galleries and artist lectures are guided through the history of modern ceramics, experience the latest work being done in the field and gain insight into the creative processes of today’s leading artists.

14667Emerging and professional ARTISTS made ceramics in a dynamic and supportive environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities.

STUDENTS of all ages, interests and levels of experience learned and explored their own creativity together with the guidance of established artists.

COLLECTORS and art-aficionados discovered new creative voices and the latest work being done in ceramics.

DONORS and VOLUNTEERS put one’s passion for ceramics into motion in a meaningful way.

The local HELENA COMMUNITY shared one of the country’s historical treasures and leading arts institution with friends, family and guests from around the world.

The Bray fosters a rich community among artists, creating a dynamic resource for new ideas and techniques as well as a source of inspiration and support. This community is made up of artists from all over the world who are in different stages of their careers and come from different training and backgrounds.

Artists at the Bray work in state-of-the-art studio facilities, receive financial support and, most importantly, discover a rich community of artistic energy and exchange. Moreover, artists working in the Bray’s community classes and workshops as well as local artists of all mediums are inspired to work and think in new ways.

Each fall, new LONG-TERM RESIDENTS arrive and begin their one- to two-year long stay in pursuit of creative and professional growth.

Each month, through the Bray’s VISITING AND GUEST ARTIST programs, a prominent and established artist spends time working at the Bray, often taking a focused approach to exploring new ideas.

During the summer, ten emerging artists work for three or four months as SHORT-TERM RESIDENTS, advancing ideas while on break from school or taking an extended time to carry out a specific project.

Thank you for your friendship and continuing support.

If we have inadvertently omitted a gift, please accept our apologies and contact us so we may correct our records.

“The Bray has totally changed my life,” says Gregg Edelen.

A resident of Butte, Montana, Gregg began his experience with the Bray driving his son up for a weekly ceramics class.

Now, almost 20 years later, Gregg has gone from taking classes himself (and volunteering to mow the Bray’s grounds!), to mentoring current Bray students and teaching adult ceramics classes in Butte, while also volunteering to serve beverages at Bray gallery receptions.
