In 1994, when Jim Sitzman was looking
for the perfect location in the southeast
for a new jewelry store, he hit upon the
intersection of North Main Street and East
North Avenue in Anderson and knew it was
the spot. But then he tried to convince his
partner.
“When I showed my partner the property,
we came up and looked at it on a Sunday and
it was a ghost town,” Jim laughs. “He didn’t

so he didn’t want to do it. In fact,
he turned around and went right
back home. I said, ‘I’ve got to
show you what that place is like
during the week.’” Well, he did,
and the rest is the history of Dia-
monds-n-Gold Direct.
 e partners eventually went
separate ways, but Jim, along
with his mother, Maureen, his
wife, Melissa, and his sister-in-
law and store manager Ashley
Cooper, is still going strong.
Jim’s love a air with jewelry be-
gan during his high school days
in Valdosta, GA, when he took a
part-time job at a local jewelry
store. “It was a distributive edu-
cation experience (classroom
and on-the-job training) and I
started as a gift wrapper and de-
livery boy,” Jim explains. “I slowly
worked my way up and got to
be friends with the jeweler who
took me under his wing. When
he quit, I took over a few things,
then when he went into business
for himself, he wanted to train me
to be his partner, so I went into a
trade shop and apprenticed for a
couple of years.”
Jim also graduated from Valdo-

pair skills, he decided to open
Diamonds-n-Gold Direct.
“Our diamonds are what we
specialize in, especially bridal
sets,” Jim says. “Most of the dia-
monds come out of Israel and
India, that’s where they are cut,
but they come from all over. Dia-
monds are recyclable; they are a
billion years old. It is a hard sub-
stance with a lifetime of durabil-
ity. Round cuts (you get the most
weight and the prettiest bril-
liance with a round) and prin-
cess cuts are the most popular
cuts in bridal sets with Marquise
making a comeback. White gold
is the metal of choice right now,
but we are beginning to see re-
surgence in yellow gold.”
When it comes to jewelry as
gifts, the Kameleon interchange-
able sterling silver jewelry system
and vintage and estate jewelry
are popular at Diamonds-n-Gold
Direct. For those looking for a
special gift at a great price, their
50% o case is always worth ex-
ploring.
Diamonds-n-Gold Direct also
oers a convenient onsite while-
you-wait repair shop for all jewel-
ry except watches. ey can even
reset your current diamond in a
new setting to update your piece.
“We shop around to get the
best value for our customers and
we denitely have the largest col-
lection of jewelry in the area,” Jim
says. “Plus, unlike online jewelry
sites, you can take most pieces
home—sized—the same day, or

Holidays could never be better
than in Anderson. Come see us at
Diamonds-n-Gold Direct for that

“My favorite thing about Merle Norman in Anderson? When shopping for your holiday meal
this season, make sure to visit Quality Foods
in Anderson, a grocery store known for its se-
lection, quality, and service. Long known for
its short check-out lines, fast & friendly ser-
vice, and carry-out groceries, it is part of the
Quality Foods family of stores which started
in Commerce, Georgia, in 1982 and has since
grown to include six more stores in Northeast
Georgia—Hartwell, Toccoa, Monroe, Sugar
Hill, Winder and Cornelia—and two in South
Carolina, the Anderson location and a store in
Greer.
Quality Foods was started by three gro-
cers. James Miller began his career in 1957
with Colonial Foods, which later became
Big Star, and ran stores in Hartwell, Conyers,
Toco Hills, and Gainesville. While working
in Gainesville, he met Johnny Wiley, owner
and founder of J&J Foods. In 1982, Mr. Wiley
approached Mr. Miller about going into busi-
ness. Mr. Miller, Mr. Wiley, and Mr. Wiley’s
brother-in-law, Verlin Reece, together opened
the rst Quality Foods in Commerce, then be-
gan adding additional stores in NE Georgia
and South Carolina. Mr. Miller retired in 2009
and Mr. Wiley recently passed away at the age
of 73, but Quality Foods continues to be run by
President, Verlin Reece, with the help of Rich-
ard Hulsey, Vice President, and Ed Cooke.
e Anderson location is run by manager
Randal Maxwell, who was trained by his father
Ralph Maxwell who began his Quality Foods
career in the Anderson store in 1995, and re-
tired as store manager of the Georgia store in
June of 2013. Son, Randal, has been with Qual-
ity Foods for 26 years.
“We believe that quality truly counts,”
says Randal. “ at means we stock only the
freshest premium meats and the best local in-
season produce. Plus, our service is second to
none.”
True to its family values, Quality Foods
remains one of the few grocery stores that
does not o er beer or wine and is closed on
Sundays. ey are also an avid supporter of

EQUALS A QUALITY HOLIDAY MEAL
Quality Foods
1. Choose the turkey that best fi ts your needs- fresh or frozen. A fresh turkey is ready to be prepped immediately, frozen turkeys need to be thawed, and depend-ing on the size of the bird, can take several days.
2. After you have decided on the type of turkey, choose a size. Consider the amount of people you will be serving, how much the people may eat (children generally eat less), and if you want leftovers to place in the freezer. The general rule is to calculate one pound per person.
3. Now that you’ve selected the right turkey, it’s time to cook your bird to perfection. The length of time you’ll need to cook the turkey depends on its fresh-ness, size, whether or not you stuffed it, and the cooking temperature, which depends on your oven and the recipe you’re following.
*Remember: Always wash your hands, utensils, the sink, and anything else that comes in contact with raw turkey and its juices with soap and water.

long enough to wrap around and slightly inside the lid of a gift box.
Secure the ends of the ribbon to the inside of the lid with a hot glue

Santa Says…
just
for f
un
Q: What is the North Pole like? S: Th e North Pole is cold. Period. Cold. I’ve gotten too
old to stay there all year so I head South in Disguise.
And, no, I’m not telling what my disguise is. Th ink shorts
and sandals.
Q: Who is your favorite reindeer?S: I don’t have a favorite reindeer, they are all special. I
have had to change my habits since Rudolph came on
board. Ya see, we aren’t allowed to fl y over cities but one
time a year and his nose is so bright, drivers think there’s
some emergency and stomp on the brakes and get in
wrecks. So, we fl y real high until we get to Lake Hartwell.
I have an elf who lives there in a real nice doublewide. I
borrow a boat from him and go to my friend Charlie’s,
borrow his car and go have pictures taken.
Q: Do you have any pets?S: I have a whole barnyard and house full. Some are
just there to make the reindeer happy. Because I snore a
wee bit, Mrs. Claus makes me sleep in the other end of
the house. When it gets really cold, I just pile on the cats
and dogs. I have a pot bellied pig, but he’s not good for
warming...and he snorts in rhythm to the grandfather
clock. I keep sending him to Mrs. Claus...and she sends
him right back.
Q: Are the elves fun to work with?S: Elves are necessary, but many are diffi cult to deal
with. If you remember Snow White had seven dwarfs
and their names were related to their personalities.
Well, elves are just dwarfs with attitudes. But, I love
my elves and Christmas wouldn’t be the same without
them....and they paid me to say that.
Q: Do you really eat all those cookies we leave for you?
S: Can you imagine how much energy it takes to de-
liver all those toys in just one night? Of course I eat all
those cookies. And here’s something that might make
someone’s day a little easier. Reindeer like cereal, just
the dry fl akes, thank you. PS: If you are an adult and you
are looking for a special present…think...Santa likes me-
dium rare rib eyes.....never hurts to bribe this jolly old elf.
Q: How DO you make it to all the homes in one night?
S: One word. Logistics. A good detailed computer
program...bar-coded packages...and quite frankly I’m a
toy deliverin’ cookie eatin’ reindeer drivin’ picture of ef-
fi ciency. Plus I get a little help from some friends.
Q: Where do you get your red suit?S: Why at the red suit store of course. Every 5 year old
knows that!
Q: Is there really a Naughty or Nice book?S: Naughty or nice books are now a thing of the past.
I have computer programs that maintain year-round
contact with every child. Th is means that you can go
from naughty to nice in the blink of an eye. Th ink of it
this way, parents didn’t have to be as good as long when
they were kids. Why it took weeks to update those old
books, but with today’s programs I get an updated list
at the last minute. So you better be good all year. No
taking bad-time breaks the day before Christmas. And
by the way, there’s a special group of elf-like individuals
who are in charge of checking back several weeks after
Christmas. If you’re not behaving, they put one of your
toys on Probation. Some kids have literally lost a year’s
worth of presents by misbehavin’.
Q: What are some of your favorite things that children have asked for?
S: Last year, I had one little girl who wanted a laundry
basket. Seems she liked to take the clothes out of the one
they had at their house and hide in it. It caused some
issues with her mom, though, so she wanted her own.
I also had a kid who was about 7 or 8 and loved to do
“projects.” She wanted tape.
