The AIM AIR hangar

At the hangar tea time, Laurie enjoys a cup of chai and local pastry. It’s more than a snack; it’s a social event.

A Rapid Response Trip—PlusAIM AIR is a Christian missionary aviation organization—part of the larger ministry of Africa Inland Mission. The team at AIM AIR exists to serve missionaries and ministries throughout east and central Africa. AIM AIR’s leadership was facing a shortage of aircraft maintenance personnel at their Nairobi, Kenya, center of operations and asked MMS Aviation for help. Typically MMS’ Rapid Response trips last no more than five weeks, but AIM AIR needed someone for at least three months.

Andrew Gudeman BeginsPilot/Mechanic ApprenticeshipAndrew and Trisha, along with their children, Grace and Micah, moved from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to begin serving at MMS. Andy is in the pilot/mechanic training program through the MMS and Missionary Air Group partnership.

MMS staff members, Terry and Laurie McClary would be able to stay an extended time, and they were in Nairobi throughout June, July, and August. In August, MMS apprentice mechanic Jenny Haver joined the McClarys and worked in the AIM AIR hangar for three and a half weeks.

MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Missionary Air Group (MAG) Cessna 206Great progress has been made in the past few months. The horizontal stabilizer was modified by Scott Grote and David Blanton. Elevators are being repaired. The rest of the airplane is painted. Mechanics are reinstalling systems and components that were removed for inspection and repair or replacement. Dale Coates supervises a crew that has included Aaron Hammitt, Glen Evert, David Blanton, Jenny Haver, Jason Maust, Andy Gudeman, David DeJong, Chuck Egbert, Jim Newman, and Mike Garrett. MAG Cessna 172Following instrument panel and radio improvements, clean-up of corrosion in the airframe, and some minor repair, the MAG 172 is being painted. Mike Garrett led the paint removal team anchored by Andy Gudeman and David DeJong. Many of the hangar staff worked with Mike during paint removal. Mike will oversee painting. Engine OverhaulsJim Newman, Aaron Hammitt, and Jason Maust took the overhauled Lycoming engine for The Harvest is Ripe ministry to Texas. They installed it and did other work on the ministry’s airplane. Continental engines for Missionary Flights International and Mission Aviation Fellowship were completed and shipped in November. As they were prepared for shipping, a Lycoming engine arrived from LAMP (Canada) for overhaul. Josh Adelsberger will overhaul the Lycoming. Gospel Carrier International Beechcraft King AirThe King Air was at MMS for routine inspection. Terry McClary performed the inspection and supervised the King Air’s maintenance. Tim Obarow worked with Terry throughout the inspection. Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A Engine TrainingDirector of Training Bob Schwartz designed the program to utilize MMS’ PT6 training aid. Training sessions occur for apprentice mechanics throughout their 30 months of training. Each session reviews the previous ones and adds further experience operating and maintaining this type of engine.

few months ago I was talking with Tim, who was a Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) pilot in Indonesia. He was one of the pilots who helped with disaster relief in the northwestern Indonesian province of Aceh (ach-eh) following the December 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami. One of the airplanes MAF sent there was a Cessna model 206. Tim flew many hours in that plane taking life-sustaining

supplies to people who had lost nearly everything.

I asked Tim what the registration number was of the Cessna 206 that he flew in Aceh. (Flight and maintenance personnel usually identify aircraft by the registration number.) He told me it was Mike-Papa-Tango, short for PK-MPT. My heart sank when he told me that and here’s why.

This year, our MMS mechanics finished restoring a Cessna 206 MAF used in Zimbabwe, Africa, and later sent to Indonesia. Its Indonesian registration was PT-MPR, and I mistakenly came to believe that Mike-Papa-Romeo was the 206 sent to Aceh for disaster relief. Not only did I think the plane in our hangar was the one Tim flew in Aceh, I told a lot of people visiting MMS that it was. I’m embarrassed and very sorry I misinformed others about where and how the airplane was used.

So now you may rightly ask, “OK, Dwight, what do you know for sure?” Well, I know the MMS team did an excellent job preparing Mike-Papa-Romeo for its new term of service in Suriname, South America. It arrived September 3, 2015, at the Surinaamse Zendings Vliegdienst (SZV) facility in Paramaribo, Suriname. There it will be known by its Surinamese registration, PZ-NMM or November-Mike-Mike. SZV is an MAF affiliate organization.

I also know beyond a shadow of a doubt that, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This time of year we celebrate the birth of Jesus—Emmanuel, God with us, and we have the privilege and responsibility to tell this good news.

As the song says, “Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born.” If you need an airplane to do that, so be it. We can help.
