Dear All

Music can be an up-lifting part of daily life. Younger people listen to music most of the time. Music has been an important part of worship for thousands of years. In recent centuries organs have been installed in churches. Our problem now is it is not always possible to find musicians to play them and sometimes pay those who can. I heard a comment once from someone that they do not go to Mudford Church as the organ was not used. O that it could be! At Marston Magna we have recently gone down from three organists to one, so like Mudford the electronic machine will sometimes have to be used. We need people to learn to use this. Is there anyone out there who could play the organ or piano, one of which we also have at Marston Magna? At Chilton Cantelo the person who played has moved. Rather than carrying on singing with no accompaniment we have decided not to sing. This reminds me very much of much of my life, and I suspect many more have the same memories, when I used to go to a said service at 8 O’clock. That left lots of time left for the day to do other things so if a short-said service is something you would appreciate, remember Chilton at 9.30 the second Sunday in the month. This doom and gloom is not the whole story. We also have bells at Marston Magna rung every Sunday. Our excellent ringers had a much-needed holiday in August. Mudford bells have been away to Bridport to be retuned and have been rehung. There is a national movement this year for more people to learn to ring and thus have all the bells in England ringing to mark the end of the first World War on Remembrance Sunday. If anyone is interested in learning to ring, please contact me. We have a peel of bells in three of our churches. We still have the advantage of several excellent organists and the Benefice Choir. I heard so many remarks of appreciation for the music after out last service with the Benefice Choir at Rimpton, when we celebrated Lammastide. The next special service is the Patronal Festival which we hold annually at Marston Magna, to remember the dedication of three of our churches to St Mary. At this sung service, using the Book of Common Prayer, the Benefice Choir will lead the singing. The preacher will be the Revd. Tim Horsington, who many of us know from the interregnum and often covering for my holidays. The service will be followed by refreshments. Two years ago, I was asked by the two

Archbishops to become the lead bishop for

safeguarding for the Church of England. This is a

responsibility I undertake alongside my ministry as

Bishop of Bath and Wells.

I was therefore much involved with the July’s

General Synod, which once again had an

important focus on safeguarding. During the

debates I spoke about the Church’s journey of

safeguarding; our history (with many shameful

episodes), our present (a commitment to improve

but a work in progress) and our hopes for the

future (ensuring the Church is a safe and

welcoming place for all).

I have been asked on more than one occasion

whether the role of safeguarding bishop should fall

to a bishop who already has responsibility for a

diocese and my answer is always an emphatic

‘yes’. Since 2016 I may have been the face of the

Church of England on safeguarding matters but

providing a safer church for all is the responsibility

of every one of us and I believe that my connection

with life in the parishes is essential to my national

role.

In our diocese we have a first-rate safeguarding

team who are supporting the hugely dedicated

people in our parishes who are playing their part

to ensure our churches are the place of safety they

should be. I am deeply grateful for all that they do,

and it will be an honour this month to preside over

a service in Wells Cathedral which recognises the

particular contribution and commitment of all our

Parish Safeguarding Officers.

I have said we must own the responsibility of

safeguarding in every diocese and in every

Cathedral, parish and chaplaincy and this is a

group of individuals who has taken this

responsibility to heart and is acting to deliver it.

They deserve our thanks. The service will be at

2.00pm on Saturday, 29 September and everyone

is welcome to come to show their support for this

important work of safeguarding children and

vulnerable adults.

The church has acknowledged and apologised to

survivors of church-related abuse and has

reiterated its commitment to address and learn

from the failings of the past. However, it is in the

courage and grace of the survivors I have met

along with the commitment of all individuals in the

parishes where I find the hope for the future as we

strive together to make the Church a safer place

for all.

I would like to express appreciation for the work being done on behalf of us all to make the Church Yard look so lovely... the regular mowing of the grass and attention to the areas which had become overgrown has made the whole area much more pleasing.... The tidying up of the footpath leading to the Village Hall from the Church is also a great improvement.

We now meet on the third Monday of the month at 2.30 pm until 4.30 pm in Marston Magna Village Hall. Membership is £5 and thereafter costs £2 per month, payment only due if you attend. THE RAIN REPORT

July was another quiet month for rain gauge

readers. There were 6 days with measurable

rain, totalling 23.5 mms (1 inch), almost a third of

the July average of 64 mms (2 ½ inches).

Sunday 29th July with 12 mms (½ inch) saw the

majority of the July rain and was the first

significantly wet day for 8 weeks. The previous

really wet day being June 1st with 10.5 mms (½

inch).

I have recorded several wet Julys. 2007 being

the wettest with 156 mms (6 inches). The driest

was 2016 with just 10 mms (½ inch), but this had

followed a very wet June, so no problem with the

lawns turning brown.

Somerset Churches Trust Charity RIDE

AND STRIDE

(Saturday 8th September 2018)

Last year, I visited 53 Churches while cycling

85 miles and thought I might well retire after

10 rides. But driven on by the generous

sponsorship received last year, I have

decided to give it one more go and try to get

the total up to 54 Churches. I have identified

one extra Church that is within range, and

hopefully the legs will stand up to the

challenge.

Any money raised goes wholly towards

Church maintenance and repair. Half goes to

Rimpton Church and half to the Somerset

Churches Trust general fund which makes

grants for Church maintenance in Somerset.

HALL COMMITTEE On behalf of the Village Hall Management Committee I would like to thank everyone who opened their beautiful gardens for you all to look around: Eileen Oldham, Revd Barbara Stanton, Vivien and Gary Bateman, Lawrence and Pam Hopkins, Lynn and Fred Monson. We raised the sum of £441, which is magnificent. In addition, special thanks to the organiser of the whole affair who provided us all with a lovely setting for a nice cream tea; Ruth David, her husband John and the whole family. And a quick reminder about our next event: The Silent Auction on 15th September 7.30 pm at the Village Hall. There will also be a Ploughman’s supper, a bar and a raffle all for £5 a head. MARSTON MAGNA HARVST FESTIVAL

and HARVEST SUPPER

The Harvest Festival is on Sunday 7th OCTOBER

at 9.30a.m. The church will be decorated on

Saturday morning. Your gifts of fruit, vegetable

and produce will be much appreciated. Please bring

them to the church on Saturday 6th October

between 10.30 – 12 noon.

We very much hope the children will bring boxes

of fruit, vegetables etc. with them to the Harvest

Festival Service at 9.30 a.m. on Sunday 1st

October.

All the produce will be given to a local charity.

On Tuesday 9th October at 7.30 p.m. for 7.45p.m.

There will be the Harvest Supper in the Village

hall organised by the harvest supper committee,

P.C.C. and helpers.

Tickets are limited and cost £10.00 Adults and

£5.00 for Children aged 5 to 11 years each

inclusive of all food and drink.

PLEASE remember to bring your own

CUTLERY and CHINA (one plate for the main

course and one dessert plate per person)

Tickets will be available in September, and tickets

can be purchased after Sunday Services, and the

Friday Coffee Mornings. EVERYONE IS VERY

WELCOME, especially newcomers to the village.

This is THE SOCIAL occasion of the year in

Marston Magna and a really great way to meet new

people, renew old friendships and enjoy local

produce.

Open Garden & Cream Teas, Sunday 22nd July

Around 70 people enjoyed cream teas in Martingales garden and £480 was raised for Rimpton Church and the Benefice. Thank you to everyone who generously supported this event in so many ways.

Special thanks to the Marston folk who squeezed us into their already busy diaries; we appreciate the strong link between our two Parishes. Charmian McCreight Christmas Books and CDs I would be grateful for any donations of Christmas books and/or CDs for my stall at St Mary’s Christmas Bazaar on 24th November. Marston Magna Midsummer Fair 2018: Allocation of Funds

A number of bids were received for funding from the proceeds of the Midsummer Fair and an allocation committee (comprising people independent of any of the organisations/activities seeking funding) has assessed each of them. The funds to be allocated this year are as follows: Playground equipment - £500 towards the cost of renewing or extending playground equipment. Support and maintenance to be further discussed with the Parish Council. The “mowing gang” - £500 toward the costs incurred this year in keeping the grass cut in the Moat Field and to cover the continuing costs next year. First Aid Course - £300 provided that enough people sign up to make it worthwhile (and make a small contribution to the costs). St Mary’s Church - £2,000 towards general running costs.

Benefice Choir

The next Benefice Service is at Marston

Magna Church on Sunday 9th September,

at 5pm, when we shall be celebrating the

Patronal Festival. Rehearsals leading up to

this will all be at Marston Magna Church

(10am start) on Saturdays 1st and 8th

September.

On 30th September there is a 5th Sunday

benefice service at Chilton Cantelo Church

(starting at 9.30am). At the time of

writing I have not confirmed where the

rehearsals on 22nd and 29th September will

be, but hopefully at Chilton Cantelo

Church. If you do not hear from me,

please email me and I will confirm.

Although we will be rehearsing the music

for these services, we will also be

rehearsing for the next services as well,

so please do your best to be there if you

can, so that we can all learn the pieces

together.

Please remember to bring ALL the music

yet to be sung at any service with you to

each rehearsal. If you need a copy of

anything, please let me know, and I can

organise that for you.

We are always keen to recruit new

singers. There is no audition, so why not

come along, join in, and have fun with

us. It is believed that singing is good for

you, it really lifts my spirit!! If you would

You lot are awesome! On behalf of my mum, myself, and the boys, I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser for Cancer Research UK. The weather was sadly not in our favour, but you didn’t disappoint! Whether you joined us, or couldn’t make it but left a donation, we really do appreciate it! We raised a total of £352 which will go towards our combined target of £750 - not shabby at all! I am coming back from an Achilles injury, but the miles are mounting up slowly and our training for our upcoming races is going well. Once again, thank you so much! Holz x

From Cath Holloway August 2018 Edition

When September comes, the summer fetes end, and the regular groups resume. These are a great way to meet people and to share experiences and thoughts. They can be extremely uplifting and can give a great sense of purpose. Most groups will love extra volunteer support if you have time to give. Talking Cafes are often held on a Monday to provide much needed company after a long weekend. You are sure of a warm welcome where you can come and chat to like- minded people and find support and advice from the agencies who come each week. Another great support is the Active Living groups that run for several hours twice a week. They often provide a subsidised healthy lunch, so you can skip the washing up every so often! Many villages have a coffee morning where locals can meet up and chat about local issues. These can be monthly or weekly. There are also gentle exercise groups. You can work on your balance if you are vulnerable to falling, try seated yoga and Tai Chi to stretch muscles and feel peace, seated bowls for fun and gentle exercise and health walks to raise

spirits through gentle exercise and conversation. There is also a network of support groups for those who work as unpaid carers. Here you will find speakers, people who have experience of your needs and a chance for a chuckle. Perhaps if you drive to a social group, you could consider if there is anyone in your area who can’t walk there and give them a lift. Some people would like someone to walk with them, to give them the confidence to join a group. If you struggle to get out of the house, you could receive a weekly telephone call from Age UK or Silver Line or a visit from the Royal Volunteer Library Service. My role in the community has changed. I am now working with unpaid carers who care for their families and friends. I am supporting unpaid carers in South East Somerset to connect them with community resources, support groups and personal support around benefits and allowances. The funding cycle for Village Agent in South East Somerset has come to an end. CCS are looking for new funding opportunities to maintain this Village Agent position. In the meantime, we have a new team of Community Agents and Village Agents in South Somerset. Two Village Agents are funded by the CLICK federation of Doctors surgeries, 2 Community Agents funded by Somerset County Council and 2 Village Agents funded directly by their parish council.
