I have always felt a connection to Del Shores’ work. He has a unique ability to capture the essence of the rare characters that live in the South. He often mixes in his evangelical religious upbringing and how it is often in conflict

with his own sexual orientation. I love his sardonic sense of humor, and how he lives life as a hybrid southerner in a completely different culture. He tells his stories with a lovely balance of humor, truth and appreciation. And of course, a certain amount of bawdiness. Sordid Lives, for example, was referred to as a “Black comedy about White Trash.”

When I was first introduced to Yellow I was taken by surprise by how different this particular work was from the rest of his plays. And while accurately capturing the dynamics of this southern family going through the discovery of betrayal and tragedy, he introduces, with a specific tenderness, Kendall. This portion of the story is inspired by a friend of Del Shores, Kendall Moore, who took his own life. Shores knew that Kendall grew up a gay kid in a fundamentalist family in Mississippi. The Kendall portion of this story was his attempt to revisit this time in Kendall’s life and give Kendall a way out of his abusive household, therefore giving him hope.

In the retelling of this story, Shores includes a family of allies. Their willingness to accept Kendall into their family, in the midst of one of their greatest tragedies, completely changes the trajectory of Kendall’s life. I am devastated by the thought of children having to endure abuse for being born a certain way. I have hope that by the telling of this story we will share the truth that kids in the LGBTQ community, kids like Kendall, are loved and welcome in our families, our homes and in our communities. I am so grateful for the sponsorship of the Salem chapter of PFLAG and support their mission of support, education and advocacy for LGBTQ people and their families in the Mid-Willamette Valley. The character, Bobby, in this play states it perfectly, “You do not have to be blood to be family.”

A Virginia native, Clyde has appeared as Hamlet in Hamlet, Lord Farquaad in Shrek, principal puppeteer for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Man in the Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone. Recent directing work includes Ghetto, Boeing Boeing, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Clyde specializes in bringing new works to the stage and worked on premieres of Magnolias De Acero, Before Night Falls and Mulligans. He is most proud of his work as a theater educator and his former students who work in the arts.

Max is overjoyed to be taking the Pentacle stage in this poignant contemporary piece. This is his fifth performance with the Pentacle; you may have seen him as a Wickersham brother in Seussical

or in the ensemble of Les Misérables. Some of his favorite roles include Frank Abagnale, Jr. in Catch Me If You Can at the Majestic and Buddy Layman in The Diviners at South Salem High School. Max would like to think his parents, brothers, friends and dog for their ongoing support. When he’s not playing pretend for your amusement, you may find Max teaching with the YMCA, running a tabletop RPG session or playing guitar.

This is Alaina’s second performance with Pentacle Theatre. Her debut was in Dracula. Recent stage credits include Christmas at the Blizzard Inn, The Diviners, Fuddy Meers, The Butler Did It

and Arsenic and Old Lace. She has been acting since a young age and has devoted much of her adult life to bringing theater into the lives of youth the wayadults sowed the love of theater in her as a child. Alaina is an avid billiard player and asurreal acrylic landscape and mixed media artist who enjoys reading magical realism, social science and historical non-fiction. She is very excited to be in her second show with Pentacle.

This is Gracie’s debut with Pentacle Theatre. She was an actor and the sound board operator in countless shows at Central High School. She works at the Monmouth Dutch Bros. and attends Western Oregon University.

Sam WelbornKendall Parker

This show marks Sam’s debut on the Pentacle Theatre stage, although he has been in two fundraiser events for Pentacle at the Elsinore: Suessical and Beauty and the Beast. Sam participates in CET every summer

and loves doing shows at SKIT Theatre. His favorite role so far has been as Lord Farquaad in Shrek the Musical. He also love musicals — his favorite is Into the Woods. An 8th grade student at Howard Street, Sam enjoys playing piano and singing in choir. He hopes you have a fantabulicious day!
