Who are MediZen?

“We have over 10 years experience in helping

Birmingham men and women improve the way

they look and feel”

Laser Hair Removal has become a mainstream treatment for the management of unwanted hair with

several thousand clinics and salons now offering this treatment in the UK.

It’s a great way to remove hair, and can be more cost-effective and reduce hours of your time compared to a lifetime of waxing and shaving. It is also very safe – if you visit the right clinic.

Unfortunately, as in any large or growing market, competition leads to a great degree of variation between the services offered by providers. Independent information sites on the internet can help you with your research, although many of these are not actually involved in running a hair removal clinic themselves, so may not truly understand the real issues involved for people buying these treatments.

In reality, of course, most websites that people visit will be clinic sites promoting hair removal services that they offer. Due to increased competition, some of these companies can exaggerate claims about the equipment that they use, or focus solely on offers and cheap prices in order to get you to contact them.

Due to recent and controversial deregulation of this industry in England (which we think is crazy!), we believe that the dangers of buying from the wrong clinic have increased, hence the first question that most people ask when telephoning a clinic, which is “how much does it cost?” should, in our opinion, be the last.

Of course, price is an important consideration, but there are many other questions that you need answering to ensure that you can really compare clinics in order to get the best results for your particular problem, in the safest environment.

This brief practical guide will help you to better understand some of the important things that you probably didn’t know about how to choose a clinic for laser hair removal!

Having been involved in the use of Lasers to treat a variety of different conditions since the mid 1990’s, we were around when the first professional commercial lasers became available for hair removal. We have treated thousands of clients at our clinic, so the following information is written from experience and will allow you to more easily compare the differences between laser hair removal providers in the Birmingham area to ensure that you choose the right clinic for your personal hair removal needs.

Using the table on the next page will help you to quickly compare, on one page, answers to some of the most important questions that you should consider when choosing a laser hair removal clinic.

This will help you to evaluate a clinic on potential treatment results and safety considerations, as well as the cost versus your individual budget.

Reading the rest of the guidance underneath the table will help you to understand more about why it’s important to get as much information as you can to make an informed decision.

In reality, specialist clinics are not significantly more expensive than non-specialist providers and will give you “peace of mind” that you’re in expert hands.

“Buying medical treatments on price alone can be a false economy – or, at worst, leave you with a permanent unwanted visible reminder of any problems encountered with your laser hair removal experience.”

Lasers for Hair RemovalThe 5 Most Important Things You Need to Know When Choosing

a Laser Hair Removal Clinic

1. Laser Hair Removal Systems – How Do They Compare?

The first lasers were approved for the use of hair removal in 1996 – and the number and types of different lasers and latterly

Intense Pulsed Light systems (also known as IPL, VPL or LHE systems) for hair removal has expanded rapidly as more people seek this treatment.

Most clinics offering “laser hair removal” will use either a laser or an intense pulsed light system – in essence both of these use light in order to heat and destroy the cells that produce hair at the base of the hair follicle. The trick is to deliver enough energy to damage the hair producing cells without causing damage to the surrounding tissue.

There is much debate in the medical community about the most effective “wavelength” of light and method of delivery of said light energy in order to maximise effectiveness and minimise problems. However, if you look at companies around the world who specialise in laser hair removal, the majority will have some form of Laser system, usually either a Diode, Alexandrite or Nd:Yag laser, rather than (or in addition to) a high specification Intense Pulsed Light device as their main hair removal machine.

At one end of the spectrum, leading manufacturers have devised quicker, more versatile, effective and safer systems for the removal of unwanted hair. These are tested by Doctors in clinical studies that are often published in medical journals. At the other end of the market there are also many other companies who focus more on producing cheaper machines with less power or a lower specification.

These machines are often not evaluated in clinical

studies. More worryingly, in recent years, Chinese and other Far Eastern manufacturers have sought to sell cut price laser or IPL systems direct from these countries to clinics in the UK – with some manufacturers not having any evidence that their devices conform to even basic European CE safety testing.

It can be extremely confusing for anyone trawling through information on the internet or telephoning clinics to understand the difference between the competing claims made by clinics offering different systems.

Laser and Intense Pulsed light systems vary in price from a few thousand pounds to literally over

£70,000! - MediZen have invested over £200,00 in professional systems.

Specialist commercial hair removal clinics who use the more expensive systems would definitely NOT pay a premium unless they were convinced that there was a difference in performance and safety.

“When you telephone a clinic to ask about laser hair removal – ask them what type (rather than brand) of laser they use; the commonest used systems are Diode, Alexandrite or Nd:Yag lasers. There will still be a big difference between higher and lower specification brands, but if they have any of these, at least they’re on the right lines!”It’s a lot more difficult, if the clinic is only operating an IPL system, to know whether it’s a premium brand device or not, as there are a confusing array of brand names and models – and we certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone with a darker skin type to have hair removal with an IPL system.

The Bottom Line...

Having a range of premium lasers using different wavelengths of laser allows the operator to choose the right

machine light to target the hair follicle – alongside adjusting the energy delivered for your particular skin colour. Clinics with just one system or using less sophisticated cheaper laser or IPL systems will often not have the flexibility to get the best hair removal clearance for your particular skin type and hair on all areas of the body.

It is worth bearing in mind that, our Soprano and Duetto Evo Laser treatment are excellent for both lighter and darker skin, IPL treatment at any clinic is generally only suitable for lighter skin types. We don’t recommend IPL hair removal for darker skin.

Professional clinics specialising in laser hair removal will have more than one system (which will often include a laser(s) and high specification IPL) in order to provide the broadest range of options for removing hair from every part of the body and for different skin types. In addition, specialist providers will also offer electrolysis and

other methods to provide the most complete range of options in order to get the best possible result for your individual needs.

Clinics or beauty salons who provide “laser hair removal” as an “add on” service to their main business may just have one lower specification intense pulsed light system.

These systems may not consistently deliver correct energy levels resulting in less effective treatments where you may have to keep returning for 10 or more sessions. This generally results in a false economy as although headline prices / sessions may be lower than specialist clinics, you may need to have more treatments which can work out to be more expensive in the end.

“Service has been excellent and the results speak for themselves. Hair is all gone from chin, bikini area and legs. Fabulous. Thank you for giving me my confidence back.”Miss L. Bird, Austrey

One of our Laser Hair Removal Specialists, treating a client with our state-of-the-art Painless Soprano Laser Hair Removal System.

2. Can you afford NOT to have Laser Hair Removal?

Most people are under the impression that a course of laser hair removal to permanently reduce unwanted hair is an expensive luxury, but this ‘expensive’ label is actually a myth! When comparing the costs of a lifetime of waxing or shaving, overall, laser hair removal is

in fact the cheaper option! The truth about how much we spend on waxing and shaving, just our legs, is actually quite astounding!

What are the Costs of Shaving your Legs?

Based on the above assumptions (we can only try to estimate as accurately as we can, everyone has a different routine when it comes to shaving) We can make the following cost estimates:

We haven’t even included any shaving creams/gels etc. you may use before, during and after shaving! These estimates are based on the average price of a razor too; if you are using the premium razors (the most expensive one found was £3.33 for a single disposable razor) then you are looking at a lifetime cost that is very surprising! £23,496!

In addition to the monetary cost, let’s take a look at the amount we are spending shaving our legs. If you shave 4-7 times a week, and you spend 15 minutes each time (that’s pretty quick) then that is 60-100 minutes a week, 52-87 hours a year and 106-178 days in a lifetime. Outrageous!

What are the Costs of Waxing your Legs?

The average cost of anindividual disposable razor(based on average price calculated from prices of all disposable razors available at a major UK supermarket 2013)

The average amount of disposable razors used monthly(based on daily shaving and the recommended use of 1-3 shaves per razor)

The average number of years you might regularly be shaving(based on daily shaving from the age of 16 through to the age of 65)

£1080

£2160

£5292

£108

Some of you might well choose to wax your own legs at home: (based on an average product cost for 1 full leg wax treatment from all suitable products available at a major supermarket 2013)

So, compared to shaving, waxing is more expensive and also less time consuming at only 30 minutes a month or maybe 60 minutes if you are waxing yourself at home – 12-24 whole days of your life. But let us not forget the most important issue when waxing – the pain! Another factor if you are doing it at home is that you are much less likely to take care of every single hair and also, it is a pretty messy ordeal for even the most experienced self-waxers out there!

What are the costs of laser hair removal?

The total cost of full leg laser hair removal at MediZen is £1400. There is no point in illustrating what the costs would be over 10, 20 or 49 years as once you have completed the 6 sessions of treatment you more than likely will never have another one again! Also with a total time commitment of only 6 hours it is without a doubt the least time-consuming leg hair removal solution, by several weeks.

The Bottom Line...When it comes down to simple economics, the results are clearly in favour of laser hair removal being the cheapest way to keep your legs hair free. It is also the quickest and least time consuming of all the three mentioned methods. How valuable is your time? In addition, shaving or waxing rashes in intimate areas may be embarrassing just before you go on holiday. More than anything, having all-year-round perfectly smooth, bikini-ready legs some would say is priceless, so at just £960 it is a complete bargain!

£1400..............

£5292..............Shaving

£17,640..............In-Clinic Waxing

This doesn’t have to be a doctor or a nurse – and, in most clinics, it is a suitably trained (BTEC Level 3) beauty therapist.

The reason for this is twofold:

• Many therapists will be used to removing hair with waxing or sugaring and are happy to spend their day removing hair from intimate parts of peoples’ bodies. We are also trained to treat transgender clients.

• In order to get the best results you need lots of practice with different people with varying hair colours and skin types, and many doctors and nurses do not have the time or want to spend most of their days removing unwanted hair from different parts of peoples’ anatomies.

Although many manufacturers of laser and IPL hair removal machines provide on-site training when a clinic buys their device, this is often only a few hours and is frankly inadequate.

The best training you can get, and the highest actual current qualification (whether you are a doctor or a beauty therapist) is a BTEC Hair Removal qualification.

3. The Claims – Just How Effective is Laser Hair Removal?

Although, in the right hands and with the right system, laser/IPL hair removal is very effective, No clinic can legally claim

permanent hair removal using these systems, as although this can be achieved - it cannot be guaranteed.

Clinics are allowed to advertise permanent hair reduction and clinical studies (on a variety of different systems) show anywhere between 50% to 90% + hair clearance after a standard course of six treatments. Individual results will also vary depending on skin type, colour of hair, area of the body treated and any underlying conditions that might promote hair growth (such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - PCOS).

The “ideal person” is someone with light coloured skin and dark hair. If you have darker coloured skin you need to be extra careful in choosing a clinic as some laser and IPL systems are not suitable for use on people with darker skins.

If you have grey, white or ginger hairs – these will not respond to treatment with light as they tend to reflect rather than absorb the light from the laser/IPL device, and other hair removal methods such as electrolysis may need to be used. In addition, fine downy facial hair tends to respond poorly to treatment.

Another vitally important factor in getting good results, safely, is the skill of the operator.

“In addition, specialist clinics may also be members of the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) – to help keep them up to date with the latest clinical information and safety guidelines on the use of Laser and IPL systems.”

Other Medical Hair Removal Options

Only clinics offering electrolysis can legally claim permanent hair REMOVAL using this technique. However, as

electrolysis can be time consuming and painful, few people now choose it as the depilation method of choice in anything but the treatment of white, ginger or grey hairs that do not respond to laser hair removal.

Vaniqa® is a licensed prescription cream that can be prescribed by Doctors to help reduce facial hair, and should be available in medically led clinics.

Most professional specialist laser hair removal clinics would still consider “lasers” to be the gold standard

for hair removal - We offer the latest technology where we can now blend different wavelengths of light to further optimise hair clearance for all skin types.

Specialist clinics sell treatment packages of between 6-8 courses (usually at a discount to individual treatments). Most people will find that this provides the degree of hair removal that they were looking for, but may still buy additional treatments to deal with any stray hairs. In addition, specialist clinics , such as ours, may suggest electrolysis to remove any hairs that are resistant to the Laser/IPL.

The skill of the operator is, in our experience, incredibly important and only someone suitably trained, and who has used the system on different people with varying skin types really understands how to get the optimum results, without causing problems from the particular system(s) that they use. Although a doctor or nurse may not actually be using the system on a daily basis, it’s not a bad idea to choose a clinic that is medically led (i.e. has

a Doctor or nurse who also work in the clinic) just in case there are any problems, and especially if you have any underlying conditions resulting in excessive hair growth.

Anyone choosing a laser hair removal provider purely on price could find themselves in a clinic (or salon) where laser hair removal is not their main service, where the equipment, servicing of the machine and training may be lacking. This could mean that you need far more treatments to get the results that you require, with it eventually costing more (both in money and time) than visiting a specialist clinic with the right kit and training. You could also experience problems with burns if the equipment is low spec / not properly maintained and the operator hasn’t had specific training (i.e. BTEC qualification) on laser hair removal.

“Laser hair removal on my underarms and bikini line has been absolutely fantastic, what a result. It sounds silly but the results have been life changing! ”C Priestner, West Midlands

The Bottom Line...

4. How Safe is Laser/IPL Hair Removal?

Both Laser and IPL devices have similar excellent safety records when they are serviced and maintained properly

and used by someone who knows what they’re doing!

Professional clinics will ensure that they have the right eye protection for you that specifically protects your eyes in the event of accidental firing of the particular type of Laser or IPL system that they own. Eye protection goggles, when used correctly ensure that there is no risk of any eye damage when the Laser or IPL is used for hair removal – even when used on the face.

The potential for any side effects will depend mainly upon the skill of the operator in effectively going through a proper consultation to see if there are any reasons why your skin might be more sensitive to laser hair removal, (this could include certain drugs, and skin diseases).

A proper test patch must then be performed where the Laser/IPL is fired on or near the area requiring treatment in order to assess how your

skin will respond. All of these checks before commencement of a course of treatments will significantly reduce the likelihood of any side effects.

If a clinic tries to cut corners with poor training or no specific laser hair removal, or where the practitioner doesn’t understand how to go through a proper consultation, or a test patch at the right power setting isn’t performed, or the laser isn’t maintained properly, burning

and blistering of the skin could occur during your treatment course.

In the worst cases this can permanently affect skin pigmentation or even cause scarring.

The Bottom Line...

A good laser technician can be safe using any system, but a poorly trained one can cause problems even with the

best system; hence good initial and ongoing training standards operated by the clinic are extremely important when it comes to safer treatments.

Look out for BTEC laser hair removal qualifications - and for extra safety, only go to clinics who are medically led, i.e.: have a Doctor or nurse who works in the clinic.

“Noticed vast improvement on my underarms after first session. Very quick, virtually pain free with no discomfort whatsoever after. Any regrowth, if any, is very minimal and fine.”Carmel Archer, Aldridge

5. Legislation – Is Anyone Looking at Standards and Safety of Laser Hair Removal Providers?

This is a highly contentious subject in the laser hair removal field. From 2000 up until October 1st 2010, all clinics in

England advertising Laser or IPL hair removal were required to be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) - www.cqc.org.uk. (The Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) - www.hiw.org.uk - regulates clinics in Wales.)

This cost clinics around £1,500/year and they were required to demonstrate that they achieved a set of minimum standards relating to the safe operation of a laser/IPL hair removal service, and that they had a transparent complaints procedure if a consumer was unhappy with any aspects of the service. Registered clinics were also required to pay an Independent Laser Protection Advisor to ensure that the premises and the procedures met national standards for safety, and a Doctor was required to govern the treatment protocols.

In addition, registered clinics could also expect a visit from an inspector employed by the CQC (part of the Department of Health) to check that they complied with regulations and, importantly, that they could show certificates demonstrating that they employed a suitably trained laser engineer to regularly service their Laser/IPL machines.

Annual service contracts for machines are important to ensure that they are calibrated

correctly and accurately deliver the energy levels that the laser technician selects. Contracts for servicing can cost from £2,000 upwards. Without inspection, we fear that some clinics may let these servicing contracts lapse to reduce costs.

So, after a decade of regulation, from October 1st 2010, only clinics in Wales need to be regulated with Health Inspectorate Wales.

This means that after 10 years of stringent standards in England, ANYONE can now buy a hair removal laser or IPL, set it up in their garage and start to legally advertise a service!

Many leading laser hair removal providers have lobbied the CQC and Department of Health to try and understand why this legislation has changed, making it more difficult for English people to find a clinic that will provide effective treatments in a safe environment. However, as it currently stands, no formal regulation or even self- regulation scheme to replace this is yet in force to help protect people in the West Midlands.

The Bottom Line...

Many specialist Doctor and nurse led laser clinics will still need to be registered with the Care Quality

Commission because other treatments that they offer still fall under regulation.

This means that they will continue to be audited and required to provide evidence that they operate to a certain standard. In order to ensure that you have the safest treatment experience, and have access to a proper complaints procedure, where problems can be reported to the CQC if your complaint isn’t fully resolved, we would recommend that you only short-list clinics who are currently registered with the Care Quality Commission.

If a clinic is not registered with the CQC, see if they subscribe to the Treatments You Can Trust scheme – www.treatmentsyoucantrust.co.uk.

Although this is not directly relevant to Laser/IPL hair removal

(as it is a self-regulation scheme set up to help consumers find clinics offering safe injectable cosmetic treatments), a number of the standards required will also apply to clinics offering laser hair removal.

“Note: If a clinic says that they’re registered with the CQC, it’s not a bad idea to ask them for their registration number (if they don’t display it on their website) as believe it or not, some clinics will say that they’re registered when they’re not! You can also double check their registration by visiting: www.cqc.org.uk”

We hope that you found this guide useful in helping you to draw up a short list of laser hair removal clinics to contact.
